It's necessary. If someone isn't demanding nothing will ever get done. You'll all be sitting there in a circle asking each other "So what do you want to do?"
Yeah, but I'm a lead guitarist and a composition writer and so I run more risks than most of sounding like an egotistical jerk-off. This probably means I'd want everyone in my band to be excellent at their instrument. We wouldn't be virtuosing everyone's butts, but I need players who have the ability to play anything I bring to the table, and who would have a wide variety of options musically in bringing their own material to the table. And if they were going to play different stuff than what I wrote, they should jam on it: I'd hate it if they kept asking "does this sound good?" |
I'd love to do some covers, but my band only writes similar music, we don't listen to it.

I've written songs with long solos and a ton of short ones and such and they got pissed. Tell them if it sounds good I guess, after they jam to it. You shuold be able to play a riff or something you wrote, teach it to the other guitarist, and let the bassist and drummer jam to it. |
Given that I write only the lyrics in songs, and Can't play other instruments, bar my minimal drum skills, I have to rely on my band to write stuff, and that's not getting anywhere.

I would commit several federal crimes for a group of musicians like that.
Because that's obviously the best thing to judge a band's music by
The horrible lyrics, vocals and guitar work put me off to. |

Also, if they're proficient at their instruments, you should be able to tell them what you *kind of* want the song to sound like, or just the overall mood, and they should be able to cook something up for you. I'm obviously not quite *proficient* at my instrument. My songwriting skills are somewhat poor, although I can follow a guitarist and keep the drummer in time. Ah, the duty of the bassist. |
Jpey is a decent nu-metal drumme,r doesn't stand a chance compared to some death/black metal drummers though
You shuold be able to play a riff or something you wrote, teach it to the other guitarist, and let the bassist and drummer jam to it.
Well, ideally, I'd love to play with a second lead guitarist. No way am I dividing up who gets glory: as far as I'm concerned, everybody should have something cool to play. But when I write stuff, I want them to play it. That's just my single-mindedness, but when I write I have a vision of what I want. Oh, for the days when one could compose whatever the hell I wanted and make musicians play it, and I would be the one getting all the glory while NONE of the musicians did. Oh to live the life of a Mozart or a Beethoven...a composer. *sigh* Everybody working in a rock vein needs to be part of a team now. Why can't there be any metal composers, or rock composers? |
Well I'd like to share the credit in a band because they're all writing it too. If it was just going to be me I'd be a solo artist or something like the John Mayer Trio (except he's so much better of a guitarist...).
I'd like having a hit band. I do leads, but it's depressing to me when I want to harmonize with my other guitarist and he can't do it. I taught him a four note harmony for a song I wrote and he could barely handle it. It's weird, he's a great guitarist but he couldn't do it... |

That's a good example

Pssh i'm in charge of my band. I write everything, and i get us all together and tell people of when they've done it bad. I put 110% into all our gigs and i generally make things happen musically. Our drummer keeps us practicing and recording, and gets us our gigs. The other guitarist (My cousin) gets drunk and has fun, and our bassist is just kinda there. Solid bassist though.
But, i wouldn't let any of them come anywhere near the base song writing. They'd cack it up probably. We have gigs coming out of our ears because of my writing, and i don't want them mucking it up. Anyway, self worship over. |
as a bassist i whore myself around too 2-4 bands (right now 3). One is strictly metal, the other is this wierd funk-fusion metal band that is a hell of a lot of fun, and that last one is basically just me and some friends playing some covers just to play.
I find that that is the best way to get better, just do what i do and prostitute yourself off to any band that is gigin. |

My band involves me, a bassist, and Fruity Loops. We have yet to finish our second song, in works since...uh...October, I guess.
A guitarist in my theory class/school jazz band wants to get together with me and a few people to jam though...he's quite good. May turn out well. Oh, I'm also an amatuer techno artist, now that I can use Garageband. :) |

Some porno companies use the same type of camera (though a slightly higher-end model) to film their movies. Doesn't change the fact that I like my camera. |

I heard once that Iron Maiden's Steve Harris (bass, for all you newbs ou there) can simply whistle a tune and his two guitarists will play it exactly. Amazing stuff...now THAT is a band. |

Yeah, you have no idea how much hype I heard about this guy when I came in...supposedly his lyrics are great (although I didn't notice anything special about them), and if that's the case, he'd best become a poet and stay far away from a recording studio, because neither he nor his producers would know a good hook if it bitchslapped them in the face.
