Is that a real ad?

Surf 09-22-2006 08:00 AM

having just read 'Rapture' by Carol Ann Duffy, i demand that all who read this immediatly go out, purchase, read and worship everything she's written. Definitely my favourite poet ever.

also i have a new piece up if anyone wants to take a look

EmergencyRoom 09-22-2006 04:07 PM

I recognise very few people in this threads last few pages :(

Unless you've all changed your names. Im suffering the worst writers block ever!!! Hence why i haven't been around. I should probably crit even though i'm not writing though, but when i sit on mx it eats up whole days. It's an addiction. Sad really,

BTW Hi all:wave:

TheBigMachine 09-22-2006 05:54 PM

Hello.
I am Mitch. How goes?

Surf 09-22-2006 07:37 PM

 s'up i'm Surf. i'm not a noob, i'm a newbie. nice to meet you

TheBigMachine 09-22-2006 08:17 PM

Wrong, your a newb not a noob. There a difference :thumb:

Edit: lawl this is my second account, because my old one (mitch2oo6) stopped logging in all of a sudden, much to my despair. I've been here since April.

Surf 09-22-2006 08:19 PM

damn, newb mistake

TojesDolan 09-22-2006 08:38 PM

You are a NEWBIE. That's the word that isn't despective at all and good and stuff. Anyway sup man, I hadn't seen youn in quite some time.

Posting any time soon? :)

TheBigMachine 09-23-2006 12:03 AM

When does one cross the line from newbie into...normal?

TojesDolan 09-23-2006 03:05 AM

Time and postcount, mostly.

Jo Shoe Wah 09-23-2006 03:44 AM

Hey i'm Josh, i've never posted in S & L but i've read quite a few threads and hung around for a while.

I don't doubt this may have been done before but i was thinking we could get a lyric/poetry interpretation thread going. Like someone post lyrics or a poem from an artist/poet they like, the next person analyses it as they would with a user posted lyric, pointing out uses of good imagery..what's good and bad about it..the structure, flow etc etc etc I'm thinking it may help some people with recognising good use of these techniques that they can incorporate into their own writing, kind of like a practical "putting to use" of the better songwriters thread.

Has this been done before/failed...if so what happened? If not think it could work?

TojesDolan 09-23-2006 03:52 AM

It fails constantly because most users around here are not literature majors, so they don't give half a rooster about poetry or lyrics by others, others than their own, and FAST FEEDBACK OTHERWISE people get very annoyed and bump songs 10,000 times and never understand they don't get replies because they're bad at writing.

So you could try making one, but it'd fail miserably. I'd try to post in it anyway. :)

Jo Shoe Wah 09-23-2006 04:37 AM

I thought that may be the case, dang. Ah well i may make one later if i can be bothered keeping it going.

Minus The Flair 09-23-2006 04:58 AM

I'm Matt. Hi. I've been here since March (matthew121) but had to change my account for reasons. Still newb.

/hello

DeadReligion 09-23-2006 07:57 AM

You know me...I think. I've been here for a year. Welcome back, dude.

I DON'T GET CRITS BECAUSE I SUCK?!?!?! OH NO! Hah.

Surf 09-23-2006 08:02 AM

to what jo said.

i think that might fail when you use song lyrics; its too subjective a subject, and people can take things like that very personally. e.g. someone postssomething about oving a bands lyrics, others disagree, ensue flamefest and pointless arguements.
but if you ue poems, you would stand a better chance of objective and more meaningful posts, but i doubt you'd get much response. probably not enough people read poetry around here, and it would be kept afloat by several regular posters. but i'd post there, so it may be worth a try, i may be very wrong.

like tojes said, most posters are apathetic towards other's work, focusing mostly on their own. which is slightly annoying.
edit: i can see about six threads on the first page where i don't believe the ts has posted a crit on anyone else's work

TojesDolan 09-23-2006 09:21 AM

And that's we need a local mod, because a regular mod (or a super) wouldn't understand the machanics of the forum.

Where art thou, BURT REYNOLDS!

there he is! there he is!

EmergencyRoom 09-23-2006 10:30 AM

A few more familar names now:)

Tojes: dunno if i'll post soon but i hope so. I've got to get my act together because i've got lyrics and music to write and a band to get together. I've been procrastinating since the last time i was here regularly.

I'll probab;y write something for a lyrical challenge soon. That always helps me think.

Surf 09-23-2006 11:45 AM
I'll probab;y write something for a lyrical challenge soon. That always helps me think.
which reminds me, should someone make a voting thread for this one?

drumass04 09-23-2006 11:57 AM

I'm Tim...I was a complete noob, then I got fairly well known around S&L and then I got horrendous writing block, and now nobody really knows me apart from those who remember critiquing myoriginal pieces which were far superior to those which escape the nib of my pen now.

Sorry I haven't been around at all in the past week or so, my computer was taken away to be fixed. It's wonderful now :D So I should be around plenty more :)

Hope you're all well, and writing

Timmy

Bub 09-23-2006 12:54 PM

I'm gonna take this oppurtunity to join this little community

My name's Bub, I've written a few songs up on here - some I've been very proud of, others I've looked back on and suffocated. I'm hoping to have a song completed pretty soon (I take eons to complete a song) might give it an "in depth" thread attempt. Anyway, hi guys!

slack 09-23-2006 01:32 PM

There really ought to be another local mod, if only to keep the Lyrical Challenges running on time. I nominate myself, of course. Or Tojes. Probably Tojes.

My name is John, by the way. I haven't posted anything I'm proud of, which is sufficient motivation, I guess. And I think writing poetry for songs is more difficult than I previously thought.

Sloth 09-23-2006 01:57 PM

Uh oh, watch it Slack... In the past the mods have been VERY defensive about adding other people as mods... People have been banned just for talking about it.. Who knows though, maybe they be up for it now..

Sloth 09-23-2006 01:57 PM

ER IS BACK!!
What's up man?

You need to get your act together soon!
Hell man, I'M even posting again now... and THAT'S saying something!

Sloth 09-23-2006 02:31 PM

Hey guys, FYI, I posted a new piece called "Exiled" today...so pay attention to that and let my older piece "Prison Smoke" just fall off...

slack 09-23-2006 02:57 PM

Random thought - the winner of LCs should get rep, and a bigger avatar at ten.

Eliminator 09-23-2006 03:02 PM

hi guys i'm eliminator and i don't enjoy writin sawngs so yeah sup

I'M NOT AN ALCOHOLIC

Minus The Flair 09-23-2006 03:38 PM

As we're all getting so well aquainted, I was wondering how long has everyone been writing for. tbh I just started writing when I visited the site in April, it was April not March. I saw the S&L forum and thought hmmm I've always wanted to write shizz but never got round to it. I think I'll try it. My first piece was awful. And so was yours probably. But I'm steadily improving, sucking right now though

Surf 09-23-2006 03:43 PM

I've been writing since around june '05, but it took about a year for me to get anywhere i was nearly happy with, then i posted it here.
