Didn't Iced Earth say they were huge fans of Maiden? So it wouldn't be weird if they were influenced by them then.
Of course they are...show me a PM band that isn't in some way maiden influenced... Titch just says that to wind me up... |

Titch just says that to wind me up...
Show me a PM band that isn't influenced by Judas Priest, you mean. |
Your right about that but not all PM bands show it as obvious as IE do.

Get back to the Mod forum :p |
I just got Nightfall in Middle Earth, it is purely amazing. Blind Guardian finally has showed me there is good powermetal without harsh vocals (Iced Earth is only ok to me.)

Actually, I'm the opposite, as I think that only 1 band is good power metal with harsh vocals. |
Would that be Bodom?
The reason I don't like powermetal with clean vocals is actually a few things. First of all any form of major scale in anything I cannot stand. The scale alltogether makes me wanna hit myself, the cloesest I'll get is mixolydian mode (i.e. some Maiden liek Run to the Hills or Can I Play With Madness). Also, powermetal tends to be very repetetive. Every Stratovarius or Dragonforce song is basically the same format. Stratovarius always does a little intro lead, the verse is just whole note powerchords, then theres a major chorus or prechorus, and the intro lead repeats. Dragonforce is very similar, and unlike Stratovarius who I think has amazing sections with neoclassical melodies, and some really good solos, Dragonforce's music just bores me even beyond the major scale parts. If you count Wintersun and powermetal, which they are certainly influenced by, but they aren't really, they are my favorite powermetal band with some form of clean vocals, although they do more harsh ones. The harsh vocalled powermetal bands (Bodom, Norther, Kalmah, Skyfire, Imperanon, etc) never use major scale and tend to have much more room for melody because they don't have vocal melodies there to get in the way of things. |
Have you tried Savatage or Sabaton yet?
|
Would that be Bodom?
No, Kalmah. I seriously find Bodom to be immature and boring.
The reason I don't like powermetal with clean vocals is actually a few things. And whilst you complained about the structural consistency of Dragonforce and Stratovarius songs, you ignored that Bodom and Norther are very much formulaic. Oh, and Imperanon sounds interesting, what album do you recommend? |
Oh, and Imperanon sounds interesting, what album do you recommend?
there a total COB rip-off still good though. |
Imperanon only has one album, it sounds much more like something a clean vocaled band would write.
Norther I agree does have very similar songs, Bodom although similar in a sense I think are all very original. And I'm not just talking minor scale, I think any mode really. In terms of melody if Dragonforce is more melodic I think your crazy. Bodom has so many more leads and use of keyboard, Dragonforce is all powerchords besides intro riffs and solos. To Steerpike, I've only heard one song by Savatage, I thought it was pretty cool, what is Sabaton like? |
hey IheatrSp where is the Palladium
|
Wouldn't know, I'm going my first time when I see Bodom.
|
Sabaton are very Wagner-ian, like Manowar, but with more of the classical influence. Their vocalist is like a Swedish Lemmy, but with more of a belting quality to his voice like Hansi Kursch.
Their lyrics focus almost exclusively on history and war, so the influence of Wagner is particularly fitting. |
Never heard of Wanger in my life, but the subject of the lyrics sound cool, I love history and war. Are the lyrics, vocals, or music cheesy? Also, is it chock full of melodies like Bodom?
EDIT: I just read some of their lyrics, very cool, not all corned out like Dragonforce. |

It's not as intensely melodic as CoB, but instead relies on using driving rhythms with a healthy dose of reverb and backing vocals to create a sweeping, epic sound. Panzer Battallion though has some really nice lead guitar work to it in harmonic minor. |
When people just start to talk about scales and melody and stuff, I just turn off.

Okay, let me put it into plain man-talk for you: Gravelly-voiced Swedish guy and loud guitars play music about blowing up Nazis. |
I find it easiest to truley be told about a piece of music in terms of theory.

Steerpike do you think you could upload a Sabaton song and send it to my email?

Depending on the speed of the cmapus internet right now, you should be receiving Primo Victoria in about 10 minutes.
And you say Dragonforce are cheesy?
At least their lyrics don't rhyme every word with "fire".
That's a low blow. At least CoB isn't mystical forests and dragons. /loves mystical forests and dragons :( |
Bodom is renowned for their crappy lyrics though.
Sabaton I can't get into. I have some stuff by them, but just don't like it. I'll give it a spin again though... |
I never said I liked Bodom's lyrics. I think they are utter crap if you ask me, but I can't hear them so I don't really care. They are pretty much just punk lyrics, a genre of music I don't care for.
"7 kings riding on the winds toward the mountains" now that is just cheesimus maxiumus. In all honesty tho, I think lyrics are maybe 5% of the importance of a song. If a song is amazing and has bad lyrics, it's still got an A in my book. |
"7 kings riding on the winds toward the mountains" now that is just cheesimus maxiumus.
Those are some damn good lyrics right there. Could stand to be cheesier. When I start my power metal band, I'm writing the absolute cheesiest lyrics possible. |
If its a joke I think that would do it a lot more justice, but Dragonforce isn't a joke...
