Jim Morrison got his whole attitude from Lou Reed and the Velvets, which could be considered beatniks.

No, New York during that time (aswell as its bohemian crew) was a wannabe San Francisco. Reed actually wanted to be like a Beatnik (ex. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsburg), but of course was a little late, and apparentely didn't fit the description. Just like Andy Warhol trying to be original with Acid Tests in New York, when they were already going down years before across the country.

Info: Electric Kool-aid Acid Test by Tom wolfe.

I really would like to read that.^

This is IMO the most importaint book during the 60's. If your still interested in psychedelic drugs it's also a fantastic read.

That's a bpold statement, but I won't disagree; I haven't read it.

I've been meaning to check it out though. :)

So much for not being the drug thread.

Looks sweet, I might try to find that.

Why try to find when you can read it FREE off the internet?

Badmoon 05-24-2005 09:14 PM
So much for not being the drug thread.
The drug talk is loose.

lunch998 05-24-2005 09:14 PM

Oh and Moon, this album is good. What I'd expect from the Dead.

Canadian-Guy 05-24-2005 09:15 PM

AHH...*didn't see that part*

*will do*

Edit - To Schyma

I didn't see that it all was on there :(

Hawaiian Baby Woodrose Seeds Have the same effect as LSD (they contain LSA) and are legal in the US, you can buy them at most plant stores. You take 5-12 seeds depending and how hard you want to trip.
Oh and Moon, this album is good. What I'd expect from the Dead.
What were your favorite tracks? :)

The Lesh tunes own. When I first got the album, I had no idea who was singing those two songs; I heard Lesh's voice so rarely and he sounded nothing like he did on "Box of Rain".

You will also most likely get sick and throw up. And last time I saw a kid puke while tripping on Morning Glory Seeds, he got very worried; he thought he was going to die.

lunch998 05-24-2005 09:20 PM

I've always liked U.S. Blues and Scarlet Begonias, and Pride of Cucamonga is great too.
I've always liked U.S. Blues and Scarlet Begonias, and Pride of Cucamonga is great too.
Yeah, I'd have to agree. I also like "Unbroken Chain".

But I like "Pride of Cucamonga" the most.

lunch998 05-24-2005 09:23 PM

In closing, it's a very good album.

What do you mean you just "take" them? Eat them? Are they morning glory seeds?

Badmoon 05-24-2005 09:25 PM
What do you mean you just "take" them? Eat them? Are they morning glory seeds?
I believe that's what you are supposed to do.

Canadian-Guy 05-24-2005 09:26 PM

Sooo....who listens to Janis Joplin?

lunch998 05-24-2005 09:27 PM

I have her Greatest Hits. Big Brother and the Holding Company are good, but I'll admit that Janis' voice does sometimes get on my nerves.

Badmoon 05-24-2005 09:28 PM
Sooo....who listens to Janis Joplin?
I like Cheap Thrills by The Big Brother & The Holding Company, but I do think it is a little overrated.

I've been meaning to check out Pearl for a while now.
Jim Morrison was more of a beatnik than a hippie.
Definitely. Beatnik is the perfect word for him. He started off more as a beat poet until Ray Manzarek convinced him to come sing his lyrics for Ray and the Ravens (or whatever they were called at the time).

Man I hate when I miss the drug talk! Never done acid, not planning on doing it any time soon really...my best friend's girlfriend's brother (if that isn't confusing enough) is a dealer, and he sells acid for 5 bucks a hit. I may try it sometime when I'm graduated and all that stuff, but not now. I'm happy with the drugs I use at this point in time. (and Salvia trips should last under 15 minutes, although the after-effects make it seem longer...although my friend tripped off salvia for about 45 minutes one time.)

I like Janis Joplin, I wish I owned some of her albums, but I only have a couple of her songs on my computer. She's also on my list of albums to buy.

edit- and that looks like a good book Schyma, I'm surprised I haven't read it already. I frequently visit Erowid. I'm definitely gonna read it when I have time.

Yea, I know.

robo2448 05-25-2005 01:42 PM

At my school, we had a spring awards assembly, which pretty much celebrates the accomplishments of the seniors who are graduating next month. They had a band of 3 seniors perform for "celebration of music" They were introduced as a "Jam Band and jammed for a few minutes before breaking into Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2. They played it during the rehearsals and the teacher running it thought the lyrics of "we don't need no education" weren't fit to sing in front of the entire student body and staff, so she said they weren't allowed to sing. They did anyway, and after the lyrics were done, as the solo was starting, the teacher's closed the curtains because the time limit was up. They kept playing anyway though, and the teachers had to go back there and unplug all there stuff. They got in a lot of trouble, but it was cool

Badmoon 05-25-2005 01:45 PM

I hate how many bands in my school claim to be Jam Bands, and of course are not.

jpj 05-25-2005 01:46 PM

I don't even think they are that many bands in my school.

TheDMV 05-25-2005 01:51 PM

I would love to form a jam band, but There are two (I think) better bassists than me. One is obsessed with jam bands, so he'd be better in one than me. I haven't been playing long enough to know enough theory to really jam, but I can't wait until I can. It pisses me off that I have no money to buy albums, because my musical tastes have been broadened so much since I joined here.
