On a guitar related note, any one got DiMarzio PAF Pro pickups in their guitars? I'm debating on throwing at least one in the bridge of my RG1570 replacing my Super Distortion. Which will probably make it's way into my first guitar as I've started thinking "I haven't played this perfect good guitar in 5 years" instead of "it is my first guitar and I don't want to change it."

PAF Pros are better than Super Distortions tbh.

I find the Super Distortion a little sterile. My Norton, while less output, is my preferred pickup for heavy distortion. It actually handles light distortion good as well, which is an added bonus.

The PAF Pro is an Alnico 5 based pickup, like my other two bridge pickups the Tone Zone and the Norton. i can't find any good video reviews of it though in the bridge. I mean, I know Satch, Vai, and Gilbert can make them sound like heaven. Just want to see a non-professional with one if you know where I'm coming from.

I always thought I'd go for a PAF pro in the bridge, if I were to buy/mod/build a guitar again. That and some awesome sexy single in the neck, and a [I]real[/I] high mounted soapbar in the mid. Like so:

tbh I find RAM to be more important when running recording programs. I used to run 2gig with Vista and that worked well (but got cranky if you tried to use cubase with anything else) but now I'm on 4gig and it's all good.

vista rapes PT for me xp does a fine job here

Whoa, hold on a sec, 800 MHz? What processor are you running that has two cores and is 800Mhz? Is it some proper friggin' old dual socket mobo?

I don't think that'll manage to keep up with runnign big VSTs but recording audio you'll probably be able to get away with...

Also, I really don't like how W7 organises windows in the taskbar. I know you can mess with it but IIRC you can't get it back to exactly the same way it organises before. There seems to be some right design problems with windows as of late, has anyone noticed on Vista/W7/Hotmail that loads of hyperlinks/buttons are just plain text on the start menu? THat seems to be taking a step back from the whole idea of a GUI :P

Really tempted to try Ubuntu at some point.

Also, SBT, note that a lot of VSTs don't like running 64 bit....

I played my RG1570 for a couple of hours yesterday. It has a PAF in the neck. I'm not sure how the PAF Pro compares to the PAF, but it does have a more lively sound to it.

Looking bleak for my Super Distortion. Though I don't know if I want to spend some of the money I have on the PAF Pro (like $75 after tax) if I really want to try to get the Mesa/Boogie Express 5:25 amp.

Zeke: I had noticed this, and despite Vista 64 bit being out for a fair while some big companies still do not have any 64 bit drivers; it's ridiculous. Anyway, there wer alot of reasons why I didn't go for the upgrade, the two mention and amongst others there was the fact that W7 doesn't seem to function any differently to Vista apart from it's very slightly simpler (read: idiot friendly).

LFD: I liked it playing through my POD last night, really articulate, but I'm going to withhold final judgement until I've tried it through my rig tomorrow at the studio, because that's where I found the 498T that was in the bridge position to be really lacking.

To be honest, 64 bit is one of the great failures of the home computer industry. Fact is - 64 bit processing has been around in workstations and **** since 1992. AMD first came out with their AMD64 cores yonks ago (early 2000s), and flopped massively because it was 'too far ahead' - there was even a 64 bit version of XP, it's just no-one friggin' knew about it. I can't believe it's getting on for ten years since then and 64 bit still hasn't made any progress.

This whole problem is almost mirrored with Vista - it wasn't really the fault of microsoft making a s[SIZE=2]hi[/SIZE]te OS that was incompatible with a bunch of crap, it was the industry's fault for refusing to make drivers that were compatible. The same goes for the 64 bit 'question' - except that less people care about it (because most people are idiots) and it's been stretched over a much longer period of time.

Oh and did you know that processors could be running at THz by this point, had the industry bothered to research MOSFET max frequency of oscillation properly? Yeah, the computer industry sucks.

Yes, the majority of people that don't know/care about computers are idiots that will believe anything, but not every one. I mean most of these "Windows 7 was my idea" commercials are about things which have been around since XP or existed in other OS for a similar time period if not longer.


64-bit probably was a flop because it was before it's time. Companies have to produce things that are worth buying. Before Vista you really didn't need more than 2Gb of RAM. The main draw for most to 64-bit is can recognize 4Gb+ of RAM with out issues. That and around 2000 companies shifted from more power to heat/power efficiency. That is why you see all the dual, quad, etc. cores. It offers similar performance as a really powerful single core, gives off less heat and uses less power.


I don't even want to know how much heat a processor running at THz would give off. Hell, gamers and computer enthusiasts already have to go through what some might deem rather extravagant cooling solutions to keep the CPU cool. Not to mention how much it would cost. I mean I'm sure if you filled up the entirety of the CPU with the core you could get a lot of power, but it would eat power and generate heat like a mofo.

Heat in THz processors - well, you're an EE student, Im sure you've studied a fair few MOSFETs in your time :P The potential for maximum frequency of oscillation is huge, it's just a matter of research.

About the 64 bit thing - well, like you said. XP pro 64 was way before it's time', which is exactly what I said about AMD64s. Thing is, the end result made it appear before it's time - the bad sales was due to a market that didn't want to move. As mentioned, 64 bit processing had been around since 1992 - mabye by the early 2000's it was way past it's due. Whatever the case, it's nearly 2 decades since then and it's time things move on. The same with multi-core optimisation, it's been slow to move on.

Don't think for a second that the 4gig limit on RAM wasn't a problem before recent years - even around 2004, when I built my first PC, people were complaining about the limits of 32 bit processing constantly... there were even articles in PC mags saying that computing technology was essentially reaching a plateau. The C2D pretty well addressed these problems with 64 bit and multi-core capabilties, so that's why you don't see any articles like that anymore. All that's required now is for the industry to wake the hell up.

Also, SBT - I dunno much about macs (mainly cuz I have absolutely no interest in them) but IIRC G4s are a bit older, I think they're from before Apple and Intel started doing business.
