I took out good old Yann Tiersen's Amélie soundtrack today again, and goddamm.. I really, really love that album. Definitely my favorite.

revisting my RATM fetish

Luxor 04-05-2005 10:24 AM

I just listened to DJ Shadow... and now I feel like some Slint.

asymm 04-05-2005 11:48 AM

Interpol's "Turn on the Bright Lights"

This really is a brilliant debut, I still love it's atmosphere and the semi-nostalgia of its sound for me and especially considering my old (and only) band did a cover of Obstacle 1.

vallely2004 04-05-2005 11:56 AM

Today I have been listening to:

Mark Lanegan
PJ Harvey
Radiohead

They were mentioned on the Xiu Xiu forums :fangirl: :upset:

They don't even have a record out yet, but I think I have to get it when it comes out.

 Glad you liked it.

Distorted Vision 04-05-2005 12:50 PM

Today I downloaded:

Slint - Spiderland
Do Make Say Think - Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn
Jesu - Jesu

I have yet to listen to Jesu, but the others are good. Slint were a lot different to what I expected.

I've been in a bit of a post-rock mood today - I went to sleep and awoke to Godspeed's 'Lift Yr Skinny Fists...'

I'm listening to my namesake as we speak, I've also been digging Rufus Wainwright for the past couple of hours, which is distracting me from my work.

Tomahawk 04-06-2005 09:53 AM

I got Rumours by Fleetwood Mac yesterday, and that's been my main dig. I was kind of ignorant about them, so I was surprised when I found out that I already knew about half the songs on the album.

Iai 04-06-2005 10:12 AM

Great album, that.

Happymeal 04-06-2005 09:01 PM

The new Jaga Jazzist is awesomeness.

Everyone should listen to "Oslo Skyline".

Swami 04-06-2005 10:40 PM

Ahem, they're now called simply "Jaga".

Wanker 04-06-2005 11:34 PM

Thanks, mister.

br3ad_man 04-07-2005 12:57 AM

Husker Du- New Day Rising (Easily just as good as Zen Arcade... noone seems to ever accept that, however)

mr_jackalope 04-07-2005 05:22 PM

I'm revisiting my Yo La Tengo and Velvet Underground obsessions. Good times.

Zappa 04-07-2005 05:38 PM

I'm listening to the new Val Emmich CD I got.
I've also been listening to the Replacements/Westerberg and the Manics.

YDload 04-07-2005 06:14 PM

We're studying the Modernist and Post-Modernist movement in History/Western Humanities class, and the professor played a little Stravinsky called "Rite of Spring." The string section started playing the same harsh note over and over again and everyone thought the record skipped, so the prof. turned if off.

But now nobody has any idea if the record was skipping, or if that was part of the piece. I mean, the teacher said before that the piece was very dark and primitive, and it caused a riot when it was first performed, so I was ready for anything. Zappa, could you shed some light on this?

Zappa 04-07-2005 06:22 PM

How far into the piece are we talking? If you know about how long it took before this started, to you also know if he played it from the first movement? The first movement of the pieces is a bassoon solo. It's a 37 minute work, so it's hard for me to pinpoint whether what you're describing is a skip or not without some more qualification of where to look.

YDload 04-07-2005 06:46 PM

I have no idea; I guess it's some kind of excerpt because the focus was on syncopation and it started out with most of a full orchestra playing, only on the unaccented beats instead.

Zappa 04-07-2005 06:52 PM

I bet it was skipping.

The piece definitely has a certain harshness to it, but by today's standards it's pretty melodious.

Iai 04-07-2005 06:56 PM

Like most Stravinsky.

Sounds like a skip to me. I can't think of anywhere in the work it does that, offhand.

asymm 04-07-2005 08:47 PM

Re-listening to some of the Black Dice vinyl I have... it's been oddly relaxing
