I hate the emo image but I like the music... if that makes sense. Like I can't stand girl pants(unless your riding bmx) and makeup and that ****. thanks alot though. Any others?

DaveToopes 01-25-2006 02:40 PM

If you like Saosin, check out Circa Survive.

Ollie_M3 01-25-2006 03:29 PM

Alright I will. I like Saosin. Just one question.... how do you pronounce that? haha Save myself from looking like an idiot. Thanks

btw I was ready to get flamed for posting that I like Senses and Matchbook etc. haha thanks

KingOfSka 01-25-2006 05:00 PM

"Say oh sin" I think.

Flagjacket 01-25-2006 07:16 PM

Saosin sucks as's. And Nick, your reccomndation didn't help at all.

Billy 01-25-2006 07:29 PM

@Ollie_M3: You'd be MUCH better off posting in Pop Punk. Here, you probably won't be taken seriously. Close to none of us like those bands, but I'm sure a lot of Pop-Punkers would like them. Don't get me wrong, I like Pop Punk, as do most of the punk regulars, just not this wave of it. MX is a diverse forum...just look around. Try Pop Punk, you'll be better there. (By the way, this isn't a flame, it's constructive criticism :))

@Ethan: Change _____ to, maybe, Bubblegum Pop Punk?

Flagjacket 01-25-2006 07:37 PM

@Ethan and Billy: I think maybe "Hot Topic alternative" would be a good one.

@Ollie_M3: Yeah, pop punk forums would probably be a friendlier part of town for you. I like you so far though cause you haven't gone all "saosin is punk rock u guyz r just close minede"

DaveToopes 01-25-2006 07:42 PM

@KEVGAY: Saosin is good. YOU'RE the Hot Topic Alternative. Piss off, bra.

I personally recommend Evan Greer, Johnny Hobo, Erik Petersen and Captain Chaos to Andre.

Johnny Hobo sings acoustic atheist humanist anthems and feeling disenfranchised and alone in modern society and his dislike of 'scenes'. You can find a show here.

Evan Greer sings political folk songs with a personal slant. They're catchy, heartfelt and witty. You can find most of his stuff here. I particularly recommend The Ballad of the Last Six Months of my Life.

Captain Chaos sings warm and touching folk songs that are both personal and public.

Erik Petersen (Mischief Brew) sings wistful idealistic anarchist anthems with fantastic lyrics that can be both inspiring and thoughful. There are shows here. These are the lyrics to the song Olde Tyme Mem'ry:

When father bought the farm we sold the farm
Took his blood for rustic charm
Sold his ghost as an antique
To the city

Kids today can't hold a spade
Rest in peace your weary trade
In this world there is no place
Such a pity

Well the barman shakes his head and fills my glass
Says we're living in the past
Why preserve a dying craft
And its misery

We sigh and say another modern man
One of property not land
So I'll hold out this battered hand
Will you listen?

Come sit down we're lamenting
About yesterday's sad ending
Bout the water in the whiskey
The brass passed off as gold
Another round we're descending
Into old time mem'ry
About a day when wood was wooden, silver silver, gold was gold
Sweet home was home

So you say you've got a wood stove in your second home
Runs on gas but looks like oak
Hell it even gives of smoke
And glowing embers

There's a quilt on down the wall reads "Home, sweet home"
But lonesome wise, words from Thoreau
And they call me throwback
When I cry "Remember!"

Come sit down we're lamenting
About yesterday's sad ending
Bout the water in the whiskey
The brass passed off as gold
Another round we're descending
Into old time mem'ry
About a day when wood was wooden, silver silver, gold was gold
Sweet home was home

Son these tools are artefacts
Endangered species left its tracks
Lock me up behind plastic glass
In the city

There's no going back for me
This antique's rustic eulogy
Shalled be sold as folk honestry
Such a pity

But I'll never understand
Why they long to use those hands
To build a stead which will always stand
In old time country

But settle for white rooms and hollow doors
Paper ceilings, padded floors
Luxury boxes where you're stored
In what was country

Come sit down we're lamenting
About yesterday's sad ending
Bout the water in the whiskey
The brass passed off as gold
Another round we're descending
Into old time mem'ry
Of a day when wood was wooden, silver silver, gold was gold

Lately I've been addicted to The Aquabats and Big D and The Kids Table. Can anyone reccommend something like these two bands? Sort of a Ska/Poppy/Punk band with lots of silly songs?

Reel Big Fish, The Jamons, and Jeffries Fan Club. Oh and Anal Cunt.

Brain Toad 01-30-2006 04:35 PM

Arrogant Worms are fantastic writers of silly songs. And they are Canadian.

My old friends dad knows them

Liebensaft 01-30-2006 06:55 PM

The Arrogant Worms have some pretty funny songs, but don't expect much of a ska sound. I don't know how to describe it.

Folky and Acoustic

Liebensaft 01-30-2006 07:13 PM

That works. I really dislike "The Lonely Lab of Broken Hearts". It's just too hokey and countryish.

ratsinthecity403 01-30-2006 08:57 PM

Hey, I have these records and 7 inches saved to my computer.
CRASS:
Merry Crassmass 7"
Reality Asylum (this is a longer edition, not the one on feeding..)/Shaved Women 7"
Sheep Farming in the Falklands/Gotcha! 7"
CONFLICT:
Live at Centro Iberico 7':
tracklisitng: Kings and Punks, Meat Means Murder, Exploitation, Bulls'hit
Broadcast, Vietnam Serenade, Island of Dreams
House that Man Built 7":
Conflict (different recording than the one on the singles collection cd, in my opinion better), I've Had Enough, Wargames, Blind Attack
ANTHRAX - Capitalism is Cannibalism 7"
ALTERNATIVE - In Nomine Patri 7"
THE MOB - No Doves Fly Here 7"
ZOUNDS - Cant Cheat Karma 7"
BULLSH'IT DETECTOR - Volumes 1 and 2 of the Crass Records compliations. Some songs are pretty good, some are far from it. And the recording qulaity on many of the songs on the first one is awful.

Those of you who would like to hear any of these
email me:
ratsinthecity403 at hotmail.com
and I'll send the files over your way. Be warned that they are taken directly off the vinyl so they don't sound perfect.

and if there is a way to hear 7" from Crass records without having to hunt them down and buy them let me know.

AndreTheHyena 02-04-2006 03:10 PM

If you like the Drive-By Truckers or Wilco, check out Centro-Matic.

Ender_ 02-04-2006 03:45 PM

If you like Rise Against you should like Strike Anywhere. And if you like Suicide Machines you should like Operation Ivy.

Fritz Plays Bass 02-04-2006 04:36 PM

Also if you like Suicide Machines, Against All Authority are definitely worth a look. Maybe the Crack Rock Steady bands too?

AndreTheHyena 02-11-2006 12:58 AM

Nick, if you haven't heard Wayne Hancock yet, get on it. He's amazing traditional honky-tonk/country. I can't think of a single contemporary country artist who comes close to recreating what he recreates.

Also, I saw these two bands tonight:
http://www.theavettbrothers.com/
Fantastic folk and bluegrass. They may not sound it on cd, but they were one of the most raucous things I've ever seen with mine own eyes. 6 strings broke between two guys in a one-hour set, and the banjo player and guitarist both have a stomp device to add percussion. Aaaamazin'.

http://www.br549.com/
Real good traditional honky-tonk. Their guitarist, who also played pedal-steel and lap-steel (behind his back, no less) was one of the best guitar players I've ever seen.

Brain Toad 02-11-2006 01:06 AM

The name Wayne Hancock is familler, I'll check him out.

AndreTheHyena 02-11-2006 01:07 AM

Get his album A-Town Blues, you won't regret it.

Brain Toad 02-11-2006 03:41 PM

Wayne Hancock is amazing Andre, thanks for the rec. Can't believe he is a modern singer, sounds straight out of the 50s along with Hank Sr. Hank 3 covers his song Wine Spodieodie as well.

I'll upload New Day Rising (album) to yousendit.com and i'll send you the link. It takes awhile though, so it'll probably be tomorrow before you get it.

On another note, is that Punk Mailing List thing still on the go?

Folsom, this awesome tuff-guy thugcore band from Las Vegas, named their If You're a Viper EP after one of his songs.

Namdrater 02-12-2006 02:16 PM

Ok, I made a topic and it got killed, because of this thread, so I'll just repeat what I wrote (and thanks to everyone who posted recommendations in that other thread I made).
Hey. I just found my love for hard rock type of punk.
I like bands like Propagandhi, Rise Against, Western Addiction, Strung Out and those type of bands, but I'm not sure what type of music that would be defined as, so if anyone has any suggestions of bands that have more or less the same type of sound that those bands have, please tell me! And I dont like bands which scream and I dont know what theyre saying because theyre yelling BLAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!
AndreTheHyena 02-12-2006 02:25 PM

Other people are gonna say A Wilhelm Scream or Strike Anywhere, but because I dislike both of those bands (I just wanted to beat them to the punch), I'm gonna say Good Riddance and Avail.

I recommend The Stick Men to anyone who likes No Wave/Minutemen/Red Hot Chili Peppers stuff. This mainly refers to Dom.

RudeBoyStompin 02-13-2006 07:25 PM

I love the Aggrolites and am looking for more funky, modern skinhead reggae. Anyone help me out?

AndreTheHyena 02-14-2006 12:14 AM

I dunno, but the Aggrolites rule.

RIP Ian Curtis 02-14-2006 12:50 AM

Any bands that are that kinda metally, progressive emo like At The Drive In? If anyone says The Mars Volta I will rape them.
