Does Corrosion of Conformity clasify as stoner metal?
They kick a ss.
I classify them as Hard Rock. But hey, if you like to get high and listen to them, I support that :D

Bartender 09-25-2005 05:55 AM
what constitutes stoner metal??

is there a distinctive sound to it??? this is a serious question ive never heard that term used before.
You could just go to http://www.stonerrock.com and read whatever they have written/listen to whatever they have available.

I was going to suggest that but you beat me to it

There is a great deal of articles, one specifically talking about Stoner Rock / Metal and its 'vibe'

:)

For all you New Orleans metal fans--

Life after Hurrican Katrina:

Jimmy Bower(Eyehategod,Superjoint Ritual, Down,Crowbar) is now living in a trailer with his relatives along with Down bandmate Pepper Keenan(Corrosion Of Conformity, Down) and his family. Kirk Windstein(Crowbar, Down,Valume Knob) stayed in New Orleans when the hurricane hit, but left eventually. Phil Anselmo(Down, Pantera, Superjoint Ritual)'s home near New Orleans was not affected by the hurricane, and neither was his barn where the record 'Down 2' was recorded. On the downside,Mike Williams of Eyehategod is missing and no one knows where he is.

And to Down fans, they will be recording a 'Down 3' according to Jimmy Bower, and it is supposed to be angrier than their previous albums.

Why I'm posting this in here? Cause Down is stoner metal, and I figured it would be pointless to make a thread about it.

For anyone who hasn't heard Kyuss yet and is intrested in listening, I threw 2 songs onto a purevol account I don't use

Oh my, I would love that to happen. I just don't think it ever will.
Got any sources?

Bartender 10-01-2005 07:57 AM

Didn't it take something like seven years just to get Down 2 made?

Something around that, yeah.

Can anyone upload some albums from good doom-metal (not stoner) bands?

i have only some anathema, my dying bride and thats it... i love doom-metal but i wanna check out some more! f.e.: katatonia

anyone an upload?

ween2424 10-01-2005 03:55 PM
Something around that, yeah.
Actually they lived in Phil's barn for a month, wrote and recorded everything. There was a seven year break between albums, because all the members were busy with their original bands. If you want to read the interview with Jimmy Bower, go to:

www.down-nola.com

It's on both of those.

I had a listen

Not too bad, really heavy

But the vocal style gets tiring quickly :(

Dang original though

Clutch is one of my favorite bands of all time. They are incredible live. Especially their singer Neil (on my avatar). He's just an incredible ball of energy. Listen to the entire 'Blast Tyrant' album if you like that song. Every song on there is equally catchy.

No albums though.

Arrakakaka 10-09-2005 02:25 PM

I'm keeping doom alive by bumping this :)

God, I just got Nightfall from Candlemass. It owns everything.

deathscreamingsheep 10-12-2005 09:55 AM

Can someone explain to me what doom metal actually is. I understand it's supposed to be slow etc but I dunno much else. Are the vocals clean or screamed or what? Is the music blues influenced much (I hear doom metal bands seem to be all Black Sabbath fans)?

repcak 10-12-2005 10:15 AM

Black Sabbath self-titled album is referred as the "birth" of doom metal... but it has nothing in common with the doom-sound, though.

Some Doom-bands uses harsh vocals, others don't. For me (sorry i am not an expert, so correct me if i am wrong) is very slow, sad and depressive music. There is even a subcategorie of doom-metal, called funeral-metal.

The best thing is to try out early Anathema (serenades, A silent enigma) or My Dying Bride... SunO))) is an extreme example for a doom-metal-band (the slowest band in the world, if you believe what ppl say...)

Go to www.doom-metal.com and there should be a big explanation somewhere about the history of it

Jondur 10-13-2005 02:45 AM

doom-metal.com is gay. Full of people asking if Autopsy or Opeth are doom. They're not.

Black Sabbath "Black Sabbath" has everything to do with the doom sound. All proper doom bands have that reference to their sound. Basically doom started with bands like Pentagram in the 70's then St Vitus, Trouble, The Obsessed, Candlemass in the 80's and then Solitude Aeturnus, Solstice, While Heaven Wept, Forlorn etc in the 90s.

The flag is still being held high by bands like The Gates of Slumber, Orodruin, Reverend Bizarre, Thee Plague of Gentlemen, Rising Dust, Warning, The River etc etc

MDB, Anathema etc just took the epicness of Candlemass and added it to slow death metal. That makes death/doom not doom.

Shred Danson 11-01-2005 02:05 PM

Is Electric Wizard any good? I haven't heard much from them...

EDIT: Whoops, huge bump.

GMac, I guess the reason you had trouble finding this thread was because it's usually pretty inactive... :( last post was on October 13th, so yeahhhh...

xizoesira 11-01-2005 02:09 PM

Stoner Doom is very hit and miss with me.

To Answer ICB - Electric Wizard is the good. Check out Dopethrone and We Live.

Will do when I get home, now that I got soulseek...(is a closet music pirate).

Phototropic 11-01-2005 03:10 PM

Dopethrone is a frickin masterpiece, even though I don't listen to anything else from that genre, it really is listenable all the way through

I have self-titled and Come my fanatics, I find them too dizzy after a while....waaaaaay too sludgy for me :(

guitarded_chuck 11-01-2005 03:11 PM

Wow, Candlemass are awesome. I think I'm going to like this genre a lot.

RiceMonster 11-01-2005 03:28 PM

I've recently been getting into Doom. Katatonia kicks ***, and that Isole album Freezing Moon sent out recently is awesome as well.

Vortigon 11-01-2005 03:34 PM

Well, I like some death/doom, and I like Electric Wizard/Sloth style doom. But the only bands Jondur mentions that I like are Pentagram, St Vitus and TPOG.

BassCozzy 11-02-2005 12:50 AM

Has anyone heard totimoshi? i really want their self titled album and knowone seems to them.

And with stoner rock
A lot of bands get classed as stoner cuz of the fuzz and wah effects on their guitar,That's usually what they have in common.

What my dying bride songs do you reccomend?I ignored them because their name sounds Emo lol

and also anyone heard Sheavy?but think their great but they sound slightly to influenced by Sabbath, and when i say slightly thats an understatement

xizoesira 11-02-2005 01:40 AM

Anyone know Church of Misery?

They're more Stoner and less Doom - not Doom at all, really - but they're excellent. Imagine Electric Wizard if Electric Wizard were Japanese and groovy as fuck all.

Jondur 11-02-2005 03:35 AM
But the only bands Jondur mentions that I like are Pentagram, St Vitus and TPOG.
How many of the bands I mentioned have you heard? I see no reason why you wouldn't like The Gates of Slumber for example.

Jondur 11-02-2005 03:37 AM
that Isole album Freezing Moon sent out recently is awesome as well.
You really should buy it if you liked it. Ola from I hate Records works really hard to release great doom bands. He won't be able to do it if people don't actually buy the records.

Loads of great stuff on that label - The Gates of Slumber, Burning Saviours, Centurion's Ghost.

Despite the fact that on the back of their album it says "We hate trend, we hate corporate attitude, we hate the word 'stoner', death to false stoners! LET THERE BE DOOM" and the fact they sound like heavy sabbath with gruff vocals

Yeah, despite that.

I haven't seen their actual album, so I haven't read what they have to say with their broken English, and they sounded to me like EW. Got a problem?

Vortigon 11-08-2005 04:22 PM

No, not at all. I just thought I'd point out they reject the idea of being a "stoner" band. And they don't sound that much like EW. But all the same, yes I've heard them and I like them.
