Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution - "Here's To Life"

It starts out with a slow, pretty catchy intro with just the guitar and drums, it's pretty cool too. After about five seconds, the horns and everything come in. It gets more upbeat, still pretty catchy and fun to listen to. It has a swing influence, with just a bit more ska into it. You probably could swing dance to this song. After a little bit more, the vocals come it, and the horns tone down for a bit. The vocals suit the song pretty well, and I like them alot, even though I can't understand some of them. I guess they're about drinking. A few times through the verse, it slows down. The drums are kind of funkish, and the horns maintain a ska swing beat. After a little instrumental, the chorus comes, with back up vocals that are pretty loud, it's close to being an anthem which everyone sings alot too. After the chorus, a horn(I don't know which one) has a small solo. It stops, then goes into a the beginning of another verse. The intro to the verse is different. I like a band that changes the song alot, and barely repeats anything. So far I'm enjoying every bit of it. The verse ends, and repeats an instrumental, then slows down again, and quickly regains an upbeat sound, until it goes back into the chorus. After the second chorus, the song slows down and stays that way, with different instrumets have small duets and such over a drum beat. It repeats the intrumental again, then it stops.. and goes into a piano. I don't like this part at all, doesn't fit in with the song, and it's not as happy or upbeat. After the piano, there's some bongos(?) and an acoustic guitar, with soft singing. Still don't like it. I'm glad they tried a change of pace, but they should've just left it out. A bit emoish, but not. It goes on for a little bit, then the piano comes in again. Then they pick back up into the instrumental with their upbeat rhythm. The beat slows down, but there's still no singing. A few moments pass.. they go into a verse, and end it differently, with the guy screaming. I don't like the yelling on this song. After that, it ends.

Loved the first half, the second half wasn't all that great. 6/10

The Cramps - Surfin' Dead

The song opens with a simple drum piece, and someone says something which is really low, and I didn't quiet catch. About 15 minutes in, the rest of the band come in, with a very basic rock riff progression. Very 1950's. Kind of reminds me of one of those songs they used to play at elementary school sock-hops, but lyrically much more morbid. Almost two minutes in there is a short guitar solo, and then everything but the drums/vocals cut out. After a little bridge, the guitar comes back softly, and starts to buildup, and returns to the original riff arond 3:20.

Well, I've always liked the Cramps - Human Fly is a great song, and the 'Live at the Napa State Institutue' is freakin' hilarious - and overall the song lived up to my expectations. Very basic structure, but thats characteristic of them, and doesn;t hurt the song.

Fire - "Father's Name Was Dad"

It starts off with a small guitar intro, it sounds like a semi old song. Like the Beatles, but slower, and not as happy, with a small psychedelic twist? It has a basic guitar riff once the drums come in. It quickly goes into a chorus, and the vocals come in. Yea, it still sounds like some pre-Beatles kind of song, but not exactly. After the verse, it goes into the chorus. Actually, this song kind of reminds me of the early Talking Heads, meeting the Beatles. For some, odd, apparent reason. I don't really even listen to either band that much. Even though I kinda like it. Definately not my kind of music though. After the chorus, it goes into another verse. Then the chorus.. Very simple song writing. Not much of a song. But it's catchy. This is gonna be stuck in my head awhile.. They repeat the intro riff, but has all the instruments behind it. It goes into a verse, then goes in a chorus.. Once again, it's really simple.

Overall, it wasn't really something I'd listen to over and over again. It's like the if the Beatles didn't discover the poppy side of them yet. 5/10

The Saints - Wild About You
The song opens with a rough guitar just kinda jamming, which then leads into a standard fuzzy chord progression, with a simple drum beat. The usualy '70's style, although less refined then most of the stuff coming out of the UK (these guys are Aussies if I recall right). Short little guitar solo around 1 1/2 minutes in. This leads into a brief rehash of the chorus, and the song ends. Rather short.

Eh... they are a good band, I like some other things of their I've heard, but this particular song wasn't what I would call top form. 6/10.

Turns out the shitty Hippie music is gooooooood. I can't really understand what they're saying, but I don't really care either. The song starts off a tad slow. I'm guessing a 4/4 beat. It sounds nice. A couple minuents into the song it picks up and you can hear the Summer of Love.

Against Me - Joy (Searching for a former Clarity Version)

Well I decided to do Joy, since I've listened to Disorder already and I just plain refuse to listen to rap. Sorry, I just wouldn't give it a fair review. And since the new Against Me! has just come out, this choice seems to be the best. I won't lie, I heard this song on the stolen demo, but I can't say I gave it a listen on Searching for a Former Clarity.

So, the intro starts off with a basic chord structure, fairly simple. It sounds like it's D, Against Me! seem to love that chord. Tom's voice comes in at about 35 seconds. The same exact chord structure repeats throughout the whole song, but there's a certain quality in the simplicity of it. This song would fit perfectly into As the Eternal Cowboy. I also heard a little melody lined played right in the middle of the song for maybe 15 seconds. I thought it was a clever little fill in and it gives the song a little more depth.

All they would have to take out is that annoying background noise you hear in the beginning. It sort of defies the first line "All is quiet, except for this song." WRONG TOM. Didn't you notice that god forsaken humming in the beginning? But compared to the rest of the album (which isn't their best effort ever), this song stands out among the, dare I say, crap.

I give it 8/10 omnibuss.

My Reccomendations:

This is a very chilled-out relaxed song. The music is good and manages to stop itself slipping into generic indie stuff. The vocalist (I think it's John Samson from Propagandhi) has a good voice but it does border on whiny at times but the back-up vocals are used to great effect. The guitar work is very cool throughout this song, very laidback and mellow like the rest of the song. This song seems to finish quite quickly despite being 3 minutes long. It's one of those songs that just seems to wash over you. You'd have to be in the right mood to enjoy this song or alternatively, concentrate on this song and it will put you in the right mood to listen to it. A simple, chilled-out enjoyable indie-pop song. 7/10

Bob Dylan - Tangled Up in Blue

Song starts off with a nice, melodic guitar riff, with some light drums in the backround. Dylan's voice is a little rough, but he still is a good singer. There really doesn't seem to be much variation in the riff, except for a little crescendo when ever he comes up to saying the title, and I think a few more parts have been slowly added in, such as another guitar, and a bit more added onto the drum part. Finally about 5 minutes in, a harmonica solo comes in - a pretty good one, which then ends the song.

Well, I liked the riff in the song, but it was too long. If it was maybe a 2.5-3 minute song, it would be good, but it just got to repetative. Still well done though. 6/10.

This song starts off quitely with just the guitar and drums before the bass and then more guitar comes in. It's a pretty standard way of strating a song but it works well. The riff is similarly simple and similarly effective. The vocals come-in. They're pretty standard light indie-ish vocals. They remind of David Gray in parts. This is not a good thing. As the song progresses however they get more emotional and less dirge-like which is good. The only real changes in the music from the main riff are a brief pause and some drum fills but it manages to avoid become boring as it's pulled off well and doesn't feel that repetitive despite it's 3 minute length. All in all it's a fairly standard well-executed indie/punk song. 7/10

Gay Cowboys In Bondage - "Domestic Battlefield"

Well. I must say the title of this band caught my attention.
I was thinking this band was going to be a bit awkward, because of the unusual name. I was pretty much wrong. It's not too bad, but you probably won't hear too much from them in the future anytime soon.
It starts off with some quote, with the guy saying all he wants to do is play Rock and Roll. Hell yea.
It begins with a chord then some feedback on the guitar. After a little bit, the entire band comes in. The guitar riffs are like the Ramones, but not as poppy sounding. When the vocals come in, it sounds like a teenager, or just a young adult with a childish-voice. It's slightly annoying, but I'm kind of used to it already. The verse goes right in to the chorus, which isn't all that great. The kid claims he has his own Domestic Battlefield, but I don't know what the rest is about. Over the verse, there is a small guitar riff that's kind of cool, but doesn't sound that great with this semi-low recording. After the next chorus, a guitar solo comes in that sounds fun, but I don't know if I would consider it talented. But I'm not a guitarist, so I wouldn't know. The solo goes right into another verse, then the chorus, then it ends. Simple song structure.

It just sounds like some kids wanted to form a band to play. There not bad, but there not too good.

The Neurotic Outsiders - Nasty Ho

This song has a really cheesy intro with a couple of big drum beats leading into a big riff. The singer says "Alright Now, Hit It!" and the other instruments kick-in. It may be cheesy but it's also well done. The singer has quite a distinctive voiec. It reminds me of Glenn Danzig's in parts. The lyrics are quite puerile (bout having sex with a prostitute) and may seem entertaining to a 13-year old but the vocals work well with the simple music. The chorus is quite anthemic. The music retains the same up-tempo hard-rocking feel for most of the song. There's a brief mellow section at about 3:10 that builds back-up into the harder music before a brief pause, and the big riff that has popped up throughout the song comes back-in until the end of the song. This song was well-done but fairly-predictable. The lyrics were bad, the vocals were okay. I enjoyed the song in parts but probably wouldn't check out an album. 6/10

Berurier Noir - La Marche Funebre De La Jeunesse Suicidare

The song starts out with a low drum beat with high hat (or at least it sounds like one). Soon a guitar riff comes in, in the backround, as well as what sounds maybe like a violin, although it has an almost middle eastern quality to it. A few new things can be heard being added in the backround as well I believe, as he song progesses. About 1 minute into the song, some backround vocals come in, chanting "Laaaaa Laaa La Laaaa Laa" or something like that. Slowly the music all fades away, and is replaced by an electric guitar just kind of going crazy, which leads out the song.

Well, the most I can really say, which by no means is a bad thing, is that it was rather weird. Not amazing, but I'm still giving it an 8/10.

This song has a standard rhythm and backing music that persists throughout the song. It's quite bouncy with a nice organ part and a pretty cool bassline but it all sounds remarkably familiar. The vocals are alright. They grate slightly but fit the song well. This song never rises above mid-tempo but the music periodically builds into crescendos and drops again into the standard beat. This song is technically fine but it's just not that exciting. The music doesn't excite and neither do the lyrics or vocals which have a talking section at the end of the song, just like every other song that sounds like this. This song doesn't really do anything for me. 4/10

The first 20 seconds of the song starts off slowly with a folk/country influenced riff and as the drums kick in the song gradually begins to speed up until the lead starts off the song by yelling a deep growl. The song suddenly begins to spin its wheels in full motion as the song progresses. The snare drum is hit quickly, the guitar roars with fantastic punk riffs that flow beautifully with the singer's voice. "We live in a big city, take a look around!" is being chanted as the drummer continues to smash the drums as the guitar yet again rolls in with another amazing riff. The song soon ends with a giant crash from the drummer's crash cymbal and leaves you pumped. I thought this was a great song and would really like to check out more from this band.

The song starts with a big simple bassline with some feedback and rustling cymbals before a pause and the music and vocals kick in. In a word, it's chaotic. It's very reminiscent of Melt Banana with abrasive vocalsm seemingly random bursts of screeching (and sometimes tuneful) Guitar-noise over the pounding bass. There is some structure to the song but the style of music obscures it. There's quite a mellow section around 1:30 where the singer sounds like he's having a seizure which builds back into the original music which continues to the end in it's ramshackle way. I like this song as it's one of those songs that constantly feels like it's on the verge of disintegrating. This is a pretty cool song but it's definitely an acquired taste. If you like Melt Banana and other noise stuff you'll like it but it probably wouldn't convert someone who isn't into this sort of music. 7/10

The song begins with moderatley grizzly vocals reminiscent of Jake Burns (Stiff Little Fingers). Soon however the song changes pace and becomes a classic example of a folk punk song. The tempo changes several times during the song though it transistions nicely each time. The bassline is particularly catchy. Lyricly the song contains all the nessecary parts of a good folk punk song, catchy nonsensical lyircs sung with goofy passion covering such topics as anarchism, rebellion, and dedication. The female backup vocals add a nice touch as well. Around 2:20, the song briefly cuts to a the sound of laughing and the clinking of glasses. This section, though short, adds a great deal to atmosphere of the song. Anyone who enjoys bands like This Bike is A Pipe Bomb will enjoy this song. 9/10

Wire - Mannequin

Starts of with slowishly played cleanish chords. When the drums come in after a few seconds it just sounds like an indie-pop song rather than punk. The singer starts a few seconds after this, and he has a good voice, not annoying in anyway. Theres some good 'oooooh's coming from the backing singer midway into the it. Its pretty much the same throughout. Its a pretty good song but not really my thing. I wont be listening to any more of their stuff

The song starts with a long slow intro on piano and guitar. It's not particularly bad but it's not exactly exciting either. It's just meh. The vocals and drums kick-in at the same time. I don't like Thom Yorke's voice. It just's too strained and whiny for my liking. Maybe it's just me but the drums sounded far too loud on the version I was listening to. The song continues in the same vein. There are periodic spooky noises in the background that do nothing for the song. This song has a fairly predictable sequence of quiet acoustic section (usually with some trite phrase repeated over and over again) building up into some big 'inspirational' crescendo. Thom Yorke's voice is quite different in these sections but somehow still equally annoying. The song builds up fizzles out to the sound of feedback. This song sounds like every other indie song of the last 5 years. It just did nothing for me at all. 3/10

Nob Dylan and his Nobsoletes - "Desolation Twist"

Starts off with a short ring on the guitar. I can tell it's already going to be a good rock/punk song I'll enjoy. It quickly turns into the guitar riff for the verse, then after a measure or so the bass, drums, and vocals come in. The verse is catchy and a bit poppy, and it doesn't sound like nothing new, but I still like it alot. The vocals fit the song well. After the verse, the chorus comes in and sounds almost like the verse, but changed up just a little bit. So far the songs sounds a bit anthemic, and I'm still liking it alot. The chorus ends with a small guitar riff, then goes right into another verse. The verse riff is getting a bit annoying and repetitive already.. It goes from verse, to chorus, verse, to chorus, and it's starting to get really annoying. Too long of a song without much of a variety. I'm already half way through the song, and nothings changed too much. I'm getting sick it already. Can't they at least add a solo in there already? I've already lost track of how many verses/choruses they've been through. I skipped through 1/3rd of the song towards the end. FINALLY. Somewhere near the end the little guitar riff after the chorus goes into a solo. I like it alot, and it's happy for my ears to finally listen to something different. After the solo, it goes into another verse, but this time it's more powerful. After a little bit longer, it adds another solo in at the end of a chorus until the end.

Finally. It's over. I can go back to my three minute song again.
It was a good song, but WAY. TOO. REPETITIVE. At least for me. Somewhere between the first eight or so verses/choruses I started to loose it. I'm going to check out more by this band, but I'm staying away from this song.

The Stranglers - Grip

The song starts off with a quiet guitar part playing a repeating riff, and a chord progression being played on an organ. When the vocal's come in, the guitar doesn't change much, but the organ part changes, leaving the chord progressions and going rather wild. The organ, being a rarity in punk, gives the song a definite unique feel. A little less then 1:30 into the song, the vocals cut out, and a a "OOOoooo" backround vocals comes in, and this is then followed by an organ solo, which inturn is followed by a little solo on what sounds like a solo, and then the organ again. The vocals come back around 2:30. During the chorus I notice a sax part in the backround, which may of been there in the first chorus, but I didn't notice it before. The backround "OOooo's" come in again after the verse, and lead out the song.

I really liked the song: very original for the genre, and while different from Peaches (my only exposure to the band prior), I still met my expectations for the band. 9/10.

Jason Mraz - Did You Get My Message?

This song is insanely calming. I can listen to it over and over and still feel a relaxing state come upon me. The vocals from both singers (male and female) merge perfectly whether someone is humming along as the other is singing or whether both of them are singing at once. Both of them are clearly very talented vocally and their pitch during the song is excellent. The drums and piano help to expand the calming effect even more than the vocals alone. The chorus is my favourite part of the song because as one singer is singing "Did you get my message?" the other singer is humming "Ooooooh" "Aaaaaaah".The song is 3:59 and the time passes by alomst too quickly while you are enoying it.
Overall, I really enjoyed this song and I think I will be listening to it alot more today.

Fall of Troy - Whacko Jackos Steals the Elephant Man's Bones

So I see this band has a thread in Hardcore/Emo and the song name was intresting so I decided I'd check it out. Starts off quickly with a burst of music. The vocals are instantly in the song and they are really stereotypically hardcore/emo type stuff. He switches between that kind of melodic whine and screaming, and it's kind of annoying. Music wise is ok, the guitar has some nice little riffs. Is there two singers? It seems there might be because the switching between the high pitched whine and screaming is so fast it doesn't seem like one person. I don't like this very much, its really chaotic except repeative and the guy's voice(s) are really annoying. There is a little guitar solo thing that was kind of silly but stupid, then it goes into a heavyier part that for some reason sounds like System of a Down. It's going all over the place but it still fails to really impress me. The song then starts slowing down and just kind of fades to little weird guitar noises. Then the guitar alone, then the bass comes in, followed by drums. This part is okay, I like the slow building up, but what are they building up to? Keeps building some more with two guitars trading high played lines, then into distorted chords and heavy playing. Then back to slow again with a little bass solo type thing, then the guitar comes in and cuts off the bass solo. This part of the song is better, and made better by the complete lack of singing. Spoke too soon, here he comes again. I really don't like his voice it turns me off from the song a lot. Then into what I think is the chrous, but I'm not sure. Then it ends, thankfully.

5/10, that insturmental part saved it from being any lower

None More Black - Bizarro Me

Yay, Fat Wreck band!

Starts with a little rock'n'roll riff and tom-rhythm on the drums.

Vocals come in, and I remember that I love NMB's vocals. Back beat on the drums, leads into the bass being emphasized (weird bass riff though).

Into a more catchy part, that I'd say is the chorus, though it's a bit short, and quickly becomes a guitar part with a slightly different time signature. It's pretty simple, and not too ear-pleasing.

Back to verse, which has been the best part so far. The awkward bass verse returns (and I don't like it), and the catchy chorus part again. This time the chorus is repeated, and it's a good chorus.

Of course, there's the guitar part again. They seem kinda restricted by song structure, but it's not too bad. Some chords with octaves and we're out.

I've heard way better NMB songs - this one was, quite frankly, pretty bland. Not bad per se, but not really good.

Feedback introduces the song before the music kicks in. It's fairly standard punk music but it's well done and I enjoyed it. The lyrics are political and pretty cool with a nice turn of phrase in parts. The singer fits the song but sounds to me like the kind of guy who'd anally rape your pets when you're not looking. The verses are catchy and the chorus is pretty anthemic. Towards the end of the song there's a nice brief instrumental break before the tempo changes and it goes into a slower chorus with lots of background "WHOOAA's" before stopping abruptly. This song wasn't particularly revolutionary but it was definitely a good punk song and I enjoyed it. Good lyrics, good music and necrophiliac vocals.

The Nuns - "Wild"

It's starts off with some synthesized keyboard or something, and it sounds like it came from some b-movie horror film. It sounds very familiar and cool. After a few seconds of silence, the entire band comes in at once with a small guitar solo at medium tempo. When it ends, the vocals come in as soon as the verse starts. It's a girl singing, and it stands far out from the music, a bit poppy even. So far this song sounds like a few girls wanted to make a rock band that just happened to have a punkish sound. The lyrics are about her being wild and unable to be tamed. During the verses, there's a few background "Oohhh Ahhh's" from the girls, and it gets kind of annoying after awhile. It goes into a chorus which has the keyboards in the background. The guitar accompanies the singing nicely. After the second or third chorus, a guitar solo comes in that's pretty rockin. Goes into another chorus then verse, then chorus, and it ends.

Not that bad of a song. The only thing downside was the repeating background vocals in each verse, and the feeling of the lack of energy from the vocalist. 6.5/10

The Members - Sound Of The Suburbs

Starts off with a cool little arpeggio, building up to the verses. The verses have an interesting "build and release" style, with a bunch of snare hits and quick vocals until the more relaxed next line, and so on. It's neat little trick but it ends up pissing me off after a while. The bass in this is quite awesome, a very cool little riff. The song is all over the place, loud, fast, quiet, offbeat, standard, very weird stuff. Then the chorus comes in and it totally fails to blow me away. Which is a crying shame because it showed so much potential before that. All in all, not utter crap, but not life changing

This thing seems to have died so I'll try and revive it eventhough I haven't listened to the following song in a long time!

Another Girl, Another Planet - The Only Ones

This song starts off with a soft guitar riff. It sounds nice. Then the bass comes in as if it was just randomly done. Then after this the song starts and it seems cheery. The riffs and drums are uplifting as are the lyrics. This song is obviously about a girl whom the singer loves. It's a great song if you're in love but not a good listen if you're heart-broken! All ican really say from what I remember is that it's a feel good song with really good music. Good listen and I'm sure most people here have heard it. If not give it a listen.

This is my first review so I hope I do it right.

Choking Victim-Suicide

Starts with a mediocre bass intro, and after two runs of the line the rest of the band comes in with a decent melody. The bass continues with the same line until the guitar riff changes and the drums slow down a bit right before the verse. The verse is fairly standard ska. The lyrics for this verse apparently are about the singer getting caught by the police drinking. Its pretty upbeat for a song of its subject matter. After the first verse it goes back to the second riff of the beginning. I kinda like this song so far, especially considering Im not too big of a ska fan. The second verse contains the same music as the first but this time, the lyrics are bad. Now the singers reduced himself to whining and self loathing. After this verse the intro riff turns into the chorus/outro. I dont like these lyrics either but the musics ok. At 2:40 the song comes back in and it just becomes a bit too repetitive for me.

Overall not a BAD song but not my kind of music. It would have had a higher score had the lyrics not went downhill from the second verse.

Much The Same, One Of A Kind

Its nothing new, yet it has that catchy tune i like

The first thing i noticed was the druming is really good, but its very typical.. all of it. repetive guitar and bass. The vocals sounds pretty much like any other pop punk band. nothing stands out.. yet i really like the song. Crappy lyrics, something about loseing a girl. over all, typical pop punk. 7/10

The Donuts-Hatchet
Overall I give it a 7/10

Sounds like Skatalites meets folk. Fairly good. I might listen to it again. Drums are very ragaeish. Like is said, it sounds like old time ska or ragae meets folk/blues/bluegrass. Not something that i would listen to or add to a playlist, but decent enough to where i most likely will listen to it again.

the casualties - punk rock love

starts with a neat guitar line, then hits from the band, the whole band playing along to the guitar "solo". when the singing starts, the song upps tempo a bit and the song gets rougher, more uncontroled. chorus is very simple and straight forward. the guitar solo in the middle is a repeat of the intro. very good song.

Mr. P. Lonka and the Jedi Knights-Pizza Guy

I like the intro and if I could tell what the guy was saying it would probably be better. It's not too bad though. The shout was very unnecssary. I'm try and blame the repettitiveness on the bad quality, but I don't think it'll work out. The song's alright, the break down's good even if the bass player is terribly inconsistent. The singer sucks horribly at screaming. He could use to just shut that mouth. And the shouting at the end was even worse.

I'll give it a 4/10 and a 6/10 if it was better quality recording.
