Dibs
By the way, Vintersorg is Sweden, he's singing in Swedish. His voice is quite good isn't it? :)
I like Mr. V's newer style of vocals rather than the deeper voicings he did in the swedish lyrical era of the band. Very excellent vocalist though.

Per Ardua Ad Astra 08-10-2004 05:13 PM

The song Bartender reviewed was from 'Cosmic Genesis.' On this album he's sort of in a transition between his swedish era and his newer stuff. Only a few songs off 'Cosmic Genesis' are in Swedish.

NJMetalMeister 08-10-2004 05:14 PM

I know what album it was on. I consider that part of the old vintersorg era: he still had a decent amount of stuff in swedish, still used a drum machine, and wasn't too too prog yet.

Bartender 08-10-2004 05:14 PM

I suppose I'm only used to hearing Swedish growled and yelled at me, and yeah, he's got a good voice.

Recommended album please, either of you?

Per Ardua Ad Astra 08-10-2004 05:17 PM

All of them...
'Tjill Falls' and 'Cosmic Genesis' are both excellent, i hear the new album 'The Focusing Blur' is excellent as well, but i haven't yet had a chance to hear it.

NJMetalMeister 08-10-2004 05:18 PM

The Focusing Blur is hands down my favorite album that Vintersorg has sung on, followed closely by Borknagar's Epic

Axis of Perdition - Ruined Nation Awakens

Starts off with a clip from the Matrix. 'It was us that scorched the sky'
This is followed by blasting guitars along with drums, and a nice scream.

00:51 is when i believe the verse starts, a guitar riff that is sort of drowned out by the vocals and the extremely loud drums.

At about 1:15 the vocalist puts a weird effect on his voice, i dig it.
At about 1:45 there is a short solo, followed by a slower riff with screams over it.
This slow riff does not last long as it is bombarded by speed, with drums full of crashes and guitars.

2:32 the vocalist puts the weird swell effect on his voice again, i'm thinking this part is the chorus. This is followed by the short solo.

At 3:09 the music stops and a clip comes in (i don't know what the clip is from) it is extremely short. The music stays slow for a while.

At about 3:30 the music becomes a bit more industrial, with screams and blaring double bass.

At 3:56 another clip, I don't know what this clip is from but it fits perfectly with the music. "I'm getting strange readings in here."

I give this song a 7/10. It was utter chaos, but i enjoyed it. The vocals were good, the guitar riffs were good, but the drums were a little loud. I would check out more songs by Axis of Perdition

Axis of Perdition are only two guys, and neither of them is a drummer, so the drums are programmed, which is probably why they sound a little loud. I'm hoping they get the mix right for the future though.

NJMetalMeister 08-10-2004 06:46 PM

Interesting Arcturus choice Per Ardua

iliketoplaydrums10111 08-10-2004 07:11 PM

Arcturus - Alone

Starts out epic kind of, but 5 seconds in everything explodes, running double bass pedal everything

15 seconds in the drummer starts to do a really really fast punk riff, but it's so fast it's not punk

25 seconds in the vocals come in, there not bad, reminds me of a circus for some reason:confused: Everything is more soft now.

Around 55 seconds in a piano I think starts to play and it makes the overall sound softer.

1:18 the guitars start going fast again along with the drumming, the drummmer is continuely gunning on his double.

2:08 a little solo comes in for the guitar, it's nifty, the lyrics are a little softer. Its a good solo as I listen to it more.

2:53 everything seems to quiet down except for the bass guitar and drums and you can hear the electric in the backround. This reminds for a sort of "build up" type tune

The song continues like it did before, and it just ends with the singer saying a phrase

It is 4:44 long

I would give a 6/10 and I probably won't be downloading more songs from them, I didn't like the vocals all that much

------------------------------------------------------

Haste the Day - American Love (hardcore, some good breakdowns and an awesome singing voice)

On Broken Wings - A Lazarus Envy (Metalcore, with a weird sounding breakdown)

Underoath - When the Sun Still Sleeps (I don't what category, probably hardcore/emo, good singing voice)

Exactly, the song didn't show it, I am only reviewing that song, not the whole artist. In that song, I didn't like it. He probably is a good singer in other songs, but not that one IMO.

Thanks for the advice. I would have..maybe but I couldn't get any other song from Arcturus and that song took a half hour to download when normally it takes 30 seconds.

O well, thanks for the advice though

Underoath - When the Sun Sleeps

Starts off with calm guitars and some weird spacy effect in the background. Drums enter, I'm liking this a lot. Violins too. Awesome intro.

The guy starts screaming and singing, like a little screaming and then a little singing. I love his singing voice, but I'm not too big of a fan of the screaming. Distorted riff, while the chorus comes in. The guy is a really talented singer, if he would just lay off the screaming.

New riff, pretty good, melodic and slow. The guitars sound really good, they mix between clean and distorted and form a cool melody. The violins in the background really makes the song stand out.

Chorus again, still good. The vocalist holds a tone for a pretty long time while the song calms down. This part is very cool, because now he's just singing with drums and muted guitars in the background. Here we come towards a climax, the guitars are building up and we enter the chorus yet again.

He sings a duet with himself with screaming and regular vocals which I found pretty cool. The screaming reminds me of early In Flames, like Lunar Strain. I'm getting kinda used to it now. We go towards the end which fades out with violins and guitar.

Very good song, much better then I expected. I will probably look out for more of their songs because they have a very talented vocalist

COB - Touch like the Angel of Death

My first thoghts about his song is that at the start it sounds more like a ballad which I ofund strange for a COB song, but soon we are into the fast guitars and catchy tune that we all no and love.

The solos in this song are mindblowing and really get the atmosphere going. The corwd are really into the song and you can tell they are loving every minute. And teh interaction with the audience is great aswell.

Vehemence - Darkness is Comfort - 3:35

Starts straight off with a technical death metal riff, and pretty cool barked vocals, which soon switch to much deeper, Nile-esque growls. Very nice so far. The vocals switch from one to the other in what I assume are the verses.

Riff changes around 0:55 for what might be a bridge or a chorus. Despite being fairly low and growled, the vocals are surprisingly well-articulated, and I can make out a suprising number of words. The drumming is good as well, pretty much constant double bass, and some great rolls.

Vocals stop around 2:20 for a while, but nothing spectacular happens musically. The vocals are almost black metal-ish around 2:48, very high, almost screeched, though still mixed with that lower growl. Oh, and it just fades out there.

Well it was all very well and good, but overall it was disappointing. There was no solo, or even an impressive change of riff or rhythm to give the song a point. Solid, but not spectacular. I liked the drumming though.

7/10

Winds - What is Beauty?

Like Bartender said, loads of strings, violins and cellos make up the intro, very beautiful stuff. Some spoken words now, after that, the metal comes in, pretty slow, with good double bass, and some excellent guitar soloing, do I hear sweep picking in there? Totally awesome. Some power metally vocals come in, but aren't as high as they usually are. A cool piano fill bit, with some strings. I like the guitars, nice and heavy. There is a slow bit now, a guy with a scratchy voice over melancholy violins. Then a tricky beat, over more vocals. After that, more excellent things being done on the guitar, kind of soloish, but not really. After more vocals, another solo, which is again excellent. A great song. Who's the guitarist? He is a freak.

9/10. I will be checking out this genre, hopefully soon.

At the Gates - Blinded By Fear
3:11

Starts out silence and then some techno comes in at around 19 seconds

Then at 39 seconds in everything comes in, it's a pretty catchy riff and the drummer puts a solid beat in their.

Then the riff changes at 55 seconds to a heavier "headbanging" riff. After that the vocals come in. Their not bad and I can stand the screaming.

1:18 in the drummer starts running on his double bass pedal to give the song overall better quality IMO.

It goes back into the main riff with the vocalist still screaming, which isn't bad.

1:50 the drummer once again pounds on his double and guitar is smoother and I like the pitch of his guitar.

1:58 the vocalist stops and it is just the instruments playing, this continues for a while.

2:13 a guitar solo comes out, it's pretty good, it's not that long either

Everything soon goes back to the main riff with the vocalist

Then at the end of the song, everything stops and there is a few seconds of silence

This is a solid song so 7/10, and I will probably check out more songs from this artist. They have potential. One of those songs you just have to hear.

Coal Chamber - Clocks

Cool sound for the intro
A scream comes in. Heavily distorted. The guitars are coming in now. It's pretty simple but not bad. I wish the singer would take the distortion off. The guitar riff beasically sucks. It is a really driving song. There's kind of a chorus where it all slows down a little. it's not bad. After that it speeds up. I like this part. Reminds me of Tool... sort of. I like the clicking echo-ey sound in the backround.
The vocals remind me of Slipknot now. Actually, the whole song reminds me of Slipknot.
The ending is awesome with the voice recording.
The guitarist seemed to be just a second drummer most of the time.
It was overall pretty bland. Nothing really jumped out except for the sample at the end and the sound in the begninning. I would've dropped this into nu-metal instead of grungy, heavy metal.

Chevelle - The Red

Chevelle - The Red

Starts with a slow riff, after a while the vocals enter, nothing special, vocals you would hear thirteen times in a dozen. The riff is not too bad.
Now there's the chorus, simple guitar and slightly whiny vocals, the after chorus is pretty good, but it's short.

Then the verse again. Chorus. It's all not that bad, but it's nothing special either.

Meh, I can't really say a lot more about this song.

It might grow on me, it wasn't bad, but it didn't amaze me either. 6/10
