Start off with some earlier ska bands. You might like Prince Buster because Madness covered a lot of his songs and took a lot of influences from him. If you like Madness, you're sure to like similar bands like The Specials and The Selecter (great female vocals). For some skapunk you'll probably like The Forces of Evil (Reel Big Fish side project, I say don't even bother with RBF, they suck, but that's just my opinion), Spitvalves, Spring Heeled Jack, MU330 (make sure to check out other Asian Man bands- http://www.asianmanrecords.com/) and uh.... Howards Alias I guess.

duffroxmysox 02-06-2005 02:36 PM

cheers, will do

pedro durruti 02-07-2005 01:41 AM

Peter- Do you have albums from these bands: Apollinaires, Swinging Cats, Higsons, and The Papers? If so I want to get them from you off Soulseek or AIM

Kithkin 02-07-2005 02:35 PM

Fraid not Peter.
Lucky for some, I have no copies!!

I think Toasters are like 3rd wave in some places, though, again it's a case of you can't pigeonhole them.

I was listening to Smoke Like A Fish the other day, followed straight after by The Toasters, and I was thinking how alike they are (and not just because of the keyboard, though that is a factor). You guys should really listen to more Smoke Like A Fish, make it a priority! :p
Come over and I'll get you a copy;)
Howards Alias I guess.
I just found out that they are hitting up my local with NoComply and MU330! Frikkin MU330! At my local! I need an outfit! Props to Vallely, aaaah, I love him
Come over and I'll get you a copy;)

One day I'll swim to America with big plans that you can take me to a show, and I'll turn up at your door and you'll run away :D

In other news, some drunk dude asked me to marry him on Leicester Square on Friday... And it got me thinking, that actually happens to me more often than you'd think :naughty:

I Sold Me Soul For Rock N Roll 02-09-2005 03:55 AM

I like ska but the only thing i have is Reel Big Fish, what are other rocky type ska bands like them?

pedro durruti 02-09-2005 03:28 PM

You're a lost cause

The Forces of Evil
Suburban Legends
Five Iron Frenzy
Mad Caddies
I Voted for Kudos
The Hippoes
Suburban Rythem

the-UK-ska-scene 02-10-2005 05:11 AM

Ahh, The Forces of Evil, a band I have to listen to more often. Played them to my friend for the first time yesterday. It was the friend who gave me a Reel Big Fish promo thing that she got signed by Aaron Barrett, for my birthday, she rules :)

the-UK-ska-scene 02-13-2005 05:40 PM

I have been listening to Operation Ivy, really loud, since I got in from work. Ahh, I think this could be the theme for my half term holiday :) Although Op Ivy kind of reminds me of the summer, and it's more like winter right now as there was hail and snow today. But yay Op Ivy! Never enough of that :D

mshort813 02-14-2005 07:17 PM

so, Ska is Dead was insane. Superspecs, Kid Go Home, MU330, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Streetlight Manifesto... Who else went?

I'm seeing Superspecs and I Voted For Kudos soon.
I'm seeing Superspecs and I Voted For Kudos soon.
I Voted For Kodos rule! They're starting their "Sincerely Boss Tour" on February 17th, and they're going all around the U.S, pretty much. The dates are on their site: www.iv4k.com
I'd love to go see them, but unfortunately I live on the wrong side of the Atlantic! Hey ho. Can't really describe their sound, 'cause I'm crap at describing, but check out their album "Close Enough For Ska" though, and have a look at their purevolume page too, 'cause they've got seven **** good songs on their!

Umm, another good band to check out, is Patent Pending. They've got like 21 songs on their purevolume page :thumb:

sketchyjoe 02-15-2005 07:44 AM

I've been mainly listening to Chris Murray, Don Drummond and Rico Rodriguez recently.

how were MU330 and VGS live?

Kithkin 02-15-2005 02:23 PM

If you compare how The Glowskulls are live to their albums, they are probably one of the best live bands around.

They just sound terrible on album but put on a pretty good show.

Which reminds me, I should listen to firme at least once before tonight. Its supposed to be a decent album.

mshort813 02-15-2005 03:27 PM
how were MU330 and VGS live?
MU330 was ****ing awesome. They put on an amazing show. They wwere my favorite band that played besides Streetlight. They did a lot of cool stuff and got the crowd really into it.

I'm not really a fan of VGS's recorded stuff but they were also really good live. They had a great souind and they were a lot of fun to listen to.

sweboy 02-15-2005 03:36 PM

So, ska-people, any news on Keasby Nights 2?

the-UK-ska-scene 02-16-2005 08:53 AM

Yeah same here, it's definitely fun to see that band although I don't listen to them much.
So, ska-people, any news on Keasby Nights 2?
None yet. According to Amazon it was released already, but errr, who listens to Amazon? I think it's meant to be released in like May or March or something

the-UK-ska-scene 02-16-2005 07:05 PM

Got Sonic Boom Six's album today

/Cream

Also got a Blue Beat Players album

And, soon enough, I will be purchasing The Scrub's new EP :D (When I get a checkbook... Tomorrow)

You Guys are off

I don't know who is listening to you guys when you talk about ska and punk cause your ignorance on the subject seems to be abundant. My first gripe is

"**** Rancid?" - I dont care if you dislike there music (especialy there new stuff considering the lows they have sunk too) but with albums like "Let's go" which pretty much sums up good street punk.

The second problem you guys have is that you have not listed on of the greatest ska bands of all time as far as i can tell:

<B>Slapstick</B> - chicago ska core band. A few of their memebers went on to be in Alkaline Trio and The Lawrence Arms, but we can forgive them for that. They had a handfull of ep and lp's that were all placed on one CD that is green and says *Slapstick* on it.

- Chad the Banned

Hint, dont come in, insult the members, talk about a band that people reading the original posts should know about, forget to mention that they went on to form less than jake, and then peddle your Amazonian wares.

almostpunkenough 02-17-2005 02:58 AM

Sorry

And evidently these forums are not HTML enabled so here are the two links again

Sorry about that guys

It's really good yeah, and it's already growing on me as well. They're very reminiscent of King Prawn in places, and that can only be a good thing! It's definitely worth getting, especially as it's only a fiver brand spanking new.

Kithkin 02-17-2005 09:19 PM

So are they the band that spawned from king prawn?

Also, which album were the two of you refering to?

I have the turbo EP :thumb:
So are they the band that spawned from king prawn?
Nope, they're just a band who appreciate the 'Prawn. Babar Luck is the ex-King Prawn lyricist dude, still going I think, awesome guy. Don't know if he has a webbysite or anything, though.
Also, which album were the two of you refering to?
Yeah it's Sounds To Consume, I wanted Turbo when it was out but I never pulled my finger out and bought it. Then we tried to get Alex (PunkerMentality) to get some copies in, but it had gone out of print and he couldn't get it :( So I just had to wait for the album, and at £5 it's a bargain anyways :D

Could someone tell me what they think of this song? http://www.angelfire.com/art2/asdf23/SLK.mp3

I'm not advertising my own band because... well, I don't have my own band. This is a band that was somewhat local around west Michigan in 1982. My parents used to see them at bars all the time. They have their album, which only has 8 songs on it, but I still like it.
Also, I want to listen to more ska bands that sound similar to this. Could someone give me some recomendations?

crasychriz 02-19-2005 10:52 AM

my dont they make a ska section on the forums. :'(

That singer sounds a lot like Terry Hall, but uhh bands that sound like it. Two tone bands, heh, that's all I got

That was a really good song, think they'd have any albums on soulseek?

I really doubt it. However, if I ever figure out how to get vinyl cleanly onto the computer (I got this song from a mix tape we had, with just that song for this band) I'll put it up on soulseek.

Wow so you can post pictures in here? Sweet picture dude.

Last night I saw Sonic Boom Six, and safe to say I proper creamed my jeans. Monkey See Monkey Do, it's amazing live, oh man. I also saw Adequate Seven, top-hole as always (even though we had to leave straight after The State We're In :upset: but I didn't miss it and it's my favourite so it's ok). And I saw The Filaments who play ska like they were born to do it... I thought they'd stopped playing ska, but they played a new song last night called "Insult To Injury" (I think) which was very ska. Brilliant, it was.
