it wasn't meant to sound "good;" it's the last lesson on extremely advanced improvisation on mclaughlin's instructional DVD
Well if "sounding good" isn't part of the technicality equation then I can spit out ridiculously technical metal guitarists who sound like **** all day long. Maybe I'm not the best person to be making this argument, considering I barely take technicality into account at all when I decide what I like listening to. |
Amit I consider this band and song to be a good representation of neoclassical music.

well i think it sounds great and clearly lots of other people do as well; that's the problem of talking about what sounds good and those ridiculously "technical" metal guitarists still won't hold a candle to old man john :[
Maybe I'm not the best person to be making this argument, considering I barely take technicality into account at all when I decide what I like listening to.
me neither but it's fun to talk about! |
Guys we can't really fault Amit on having banana logic... I mean...

LOL, look at that Möevöt video
Guys we can't really fault Amit on having banana logic... I mean...
Well you must understand that he started out with mango logic before he realized he could trade up to banana logic by acting black |

^I'd say it's technical and sounds good. Only problem possibly being that the kid digs his Holdsworth maybe a bit too much. |

you're not going to change amit's mind and amit isn't going to change anyone else's mind let's just all admit we're too close-minded to hear the other side's argument and aruge about race or something slightly less irrelevant |

I'm not trying to compete. Just because it's not McLaughlin doesn't mean it's not technical. |

I kind of like how "busy" that sounded. |
Through the trials and tribulations of this thread I think we have reached these conclusions.
i believe the classical to metal influence is extremely overstated by metal fans and that this is simply an attempt of needlessly legitimizing one's preferred form of popular music (metal in this case) by tenuously associating it with a very established form of art music (classical music) if metal was truly classically influenced, then it would be far less thematically transparent and also far more interested in compositional process and dynamics
This might be the case. Might be overstated by some. True. But, what you're trying to do is also unfair. You're trying to negate it, like it's not really there at all. Which it most certainly 'is'. I'll drag out the same examples of Steve Harris (Maiden) and Rany Rhoads (Ozzy) again. If these guys study/appreciate Classical music for a period of time, and then they go to compose music themselves, and the same patterns which are characteristic of Classical music, now show up in their self-composed Heavy Metal, then there is a DEGREE of INFLUENCE happening. Sure as schitt there is. Is it a tremendous influence? NO! If it was, then it wouldn't be 'original' Ozzy or Maiden music. It would be a rip-off of someone else's earlier work. There is a small degree of influence. There is a small to moderate Classical influence in this specific period of Heavy Metal. Now, in the case of Metallica, NO ONE in the band (to my knowledge) studied Classical music at all. Yet, that same thing that is found in Maiden and Rhoads' playing is also found in Metallica's '83 to '88 period. So, with them, they're actually getting their influence through 'proxy'. Hetfield and Ulrich were studying what was going on in NWOBHM music and they adjusted the band's sound accordingly. So, that Classical influence didn't come directly from Classical itself, but instead, from the 1st gen. of musicians who were adopting the techniques. Same thing happens in modern Metal every couple of years. Someone figures out how to do something a little differently, and then EVERYONE else starts to interject that thing into their own music. All Metal is (or any genre for that matter) a recycling or borrowing/stealing of ideas from other artists. |
a lot of words
Not going to go in-depth, just wanted to point out that Cliff Burton of Metallica was a big fan of classical and could read sheet music, though I don't think he estensively studied it. |
Dipset only comes into the conclusion when the fecal matter level of the situation has risen about 1488 bad posts.
