East Coast rap started out as pretty harmless stuff--Run-DMC, the Beasties, Biz Markie, etc. The king of East Coast was Russell Simmons and Def Jam. Then later on it moved into Gangsta Rap in the 90's with Biggie Smalls, Jay-Z, Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, DMX, etc.
West Coast rap came Straight Outta Compton (yuk yuk yuk)--it was far angrier and more abrasive (signature West Coast rap: NWA, Ice-T); West Coast rap evolved into G-Funk in the 90's with the creation of Death Row records and the release of Dr. Dre's The Chronic.
West Coast rap came from Compton but wasn't angry. It started in the early '80s by the likes of the Egyptian Lover and The World Class Wreckin' Cru. It was electro-funk, a techno'ish hip-hop for people to dance to. The first form of gangster rap came from the East, too. Schoolly D actually started it. But, the first true gangster rap song was 6 In The Mornin' by Ice-T. And both Ice-T and NWA had completely different sounds. NWA was A LOT more P-funk inluenced. And underground West coast stuff (Pharcyde, Alkaholiks, Blackalicious, Freestyle Fellowship, Souls Of Mischief) had much more in common with the jazzy hip-hop from the East, than the West Coast funk from the West. And East Coast started with block parties. Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five, Afrika Bambaata, etc. I'm surprised you didn't list Kurtis Blow. Run-DMC, Krs, Beasties, etc. Are more of a second wave, really. Also, Wu-Tang isn't gangster but hardcore rap. |
Can't spell crap without rap. :)
Has anyone got any Geto Boys songs on their comps. Preferably Crooked Officer. I lost my 'Till Death Do Us Part' album agessss ago. Anyone a fan of Scarface's solo stuff? I love The Diary, but the rest is a bit on and off.

I haven't listened to the Geto Boys in aaaages. Pretty good stuff, though. |
All of this rap thread and no one uploaded a public enemy or NWA album?
/knows that someone probably did, but doesn't want to go back and read through the whole thread, but still hints at what he wants uploaded anyway |

I know. But I don't want to go out and buy any cds for another month or two because I'm saving up for a bass I really want
|
Then use alternate sources to get the songs.

The R in R&M stands for Rap, didn't you know? |
Outkast are the new de la soul imo.
Reinvigorating hip hop and giving it a second wind. Also New Zealander Scribe is pretty good for some new stuff. |

Handsome Boy Modeling School - White People A great album. |
I like HBMS.
What do people think of DJ Premier? Just heard the name dropped. |
DJ Premier is awesome, one of the best producers of the 90's.
|
the roots are my favorite rap next to outkast :thumb:, along with old school and political rap(when rap wasn't always about the same generic topics, getting ass, the ghetto, and all that other bs) and the only new rap I like is probably the gorillaz.

i have "Straight outta compton" if you really want AIM: hafez06 |
I think that UK rap should be mentioned as I think bands such as The Streets have amazing lyrical talents and go beyond what most people think of rap. I would highly recommend downloading "dry your eyes mate" or "blinded by light" for anyone who enjoys good music
|
I don't like the Streets, although I do like a fair bit of UK Rap. If anyone can pick up any early stuff from Blak Twang, I highly recommend it. There's also the more popular artists like Roots Manuva, Rodney P, Broke 'N' English, Braintax etc etc.
Anyway, yeah. It does deserve a mention. |
awesome, I admit i am a bit uninformed when it comes to rap in general though, thanks :thumb:
|
Yeah I really like the Streets.
|
i only like beastie boys on the side
|
I like the Sugahill Gang, NWA, Jay Z and the bEASTIE bOYS.
I haven't seen Eric B & Rakim mentioned yet, though surely they must have been.
Paid In Full = utter classic. Rakim easily has one of the best flows I've ever heard - maybe the best.
Brilliant album, one of my favourites. On a random note - can anyone recommend which is the best album to buy by these artists/groups: Mobb Deep Jay Z Onyx Jedi Mind Tricks Slick Rick De La Soul (I have some songs off 3 Feet & Rising and I love them but I don't know whether the album is considered their best). Thanks in advance! :thumb: |
Mobb Deep - The Infamous
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt Slick Rick - The Great Adventures of Slick Rick De La Soul - 3 Feet & Rising |

Though it is certainly a departure from 3 Feet, it is nonetheless very impressive imo and kinda follows that path similar to Common, Talib Kweli, and Mos Def (if you're a fan of that). |

For De La Soul, some suggestions for downloading:
