I've known about you and Nuclear Rabbit for a bit over a year now and I'd have to say I am definitely a fan! You are extremely talented. The friend of mine that got me into Nuclear Rabbit is absolutely obsessed. We wish we could see you in concert, but seeing as we're in Michigan, I doubt that would happen :p

I can't really think of a question that hasn't allready been asked, so I'll just say thanks for stopping by our humble forum. :thumb:

Low_End_Communications 08-01-2005 11:26 PM

Here's a good question: When do we get to see the new beasts?

Look there. I like it. A lot.

Worrpigs 08-02-2005 06:54 PM

Mr. Baudin, you such an inspiration to me, like i posted on your myspace account(like youd know it was me or anything) your music, especially "Frosty Acres" has helped me through alot of times, and no joke, after about a half hour after hearing that song, i decided to get me an ERB. Now for a question, how long did it take you to build your first 9 stringer, or was it built for you, how did you design it, get the specs, etc. sorry for so many questions but i really like your basses and your music.
much love and respect,
ben

That Vintage 9 is amazing.

Now, when is the Hideous Claw and Joust 9 going to be completed? Any progress shots? Over at TB members when mentioning how Conklin was finally able to move on with other projects because your herd is nearly complete, so what's the story?! WHEN CAN WE SEE MORE!?!?!?

Ya know, if you wanna bring Nuclear Rabbit to the UP of Michigan, I'd be glad to let the band stay at my house!

Shabookie 08-03-2005 11:37 AM

Yea, this guy is one bad mofo.... The super mario theme rocked my socks off.
hey jean man, what do you do before a gig? me a have a nice 16oz energy drink. Also are you going to put up any more vids? thanks brother.
Sorry guys - I've been out of it again.

If any of you are interested, I'll be on the G4 Cable Channel show "Attack of the Show" - next week (8/11). I'll be doing a little bit of tapping. :D

Before a gig, I usually just walk around talk to fans or check out the other bands. I have no "pre-show rituals". :)

As for vids, I'm going to see about putting up the tv appearance (mentioned above).

Jean Baudin 08-05-2005 10:31 AM
So there's hope for me! ;)

As for my question...I was thinking since you are like the shiz at the art of tapping. Would you be kind enough either to write a lesson and put it on your site or in the lessons section of this forum?

It would great to learn from someone such as yourself :thumb:

/suck up.
Yeah, I hope to have some lessons up on my site at some point. I'm writing a four hour tapping class so I think I'll have some material I can siphon from.

Jean Baudin 08-05-2005 10:32 AM
My only question would be this: Do you have any affinity for Gabe from Penny Arcade?

>_>
<_<
Sorry not familiar with that. Is that an internet thing?
for you...what is the most challanging song you know...
I was working on one of the pieces from the Well-Tempered Clavier from Bach and that was killing me. It had 3 independent voices which was resulting in having 4-5 fingers on the fretboard moving in different directions... I kinda gave up on that one.

There's a mozart piece I have been working on that's pretty hard but I can play it at a slow tempo. Though, I'm trying not to practice that one because I'm going to rearrange the fingerings for the 11 - so I don't want to have to unlearn it... if that makes any sense.

Hey ben. well, I certainly didn't build them myself. I have a problem just holding a screwdriver - building an instrument is way beyond my scope.

my first 9 was modeled after my custom 5 I had made for me in high school. the spacing of the strings is the same as that bass (15mm) which is narrower than most basses. for future basses, I've tried to vary the woods and tones so they all sound a little different from each other. the pac bass has a deep tone whereas the retro bass is more punchy and also had the midi thing going on so I can play different patches through it (piano, organ, violin, etc.).

these guys make great extended range basses:

watch out though, they aren't cheap.

Papa Shank 08-05-2005 11:05 AM

hey Jean, don't know if this has been asked before but have you got any transcriptions for tapping on your 9 stringers? or are you just using sheet music?
I'm looking to learn touchstyle you see.

My conklin 11 still doesn't have the fretboard glued on - it's closer, but certainly not nearly complete. I still don't have a new picture of that one. Funny, my bass was ordered long before his and his is more complete! :amaze:

The hideous claw will remain a mystery until it's finished. Part of the deal I made with the builders.

The KL Joust (it's an 11) bass is getting acclimated (sp?) for my weather down here and he's getting ready to make the wood bridge for it (ken has already made 3 mock bridges to get the saddles right). After that is the electronics and the Oil/Wax finish and it's done.

As I said a couple posts back that I haven't got any new pictures in awhile.

As for when they are completed I have no clue... they are all WAY behind schedule. The claw started in 11/03 - the k. lawrence was ordered 12/03 and the Conklin bass 1/04. I'm hoping they all be finished by September (probably the Joust bass first).

Gaming comic. http://www.penny-arcade.com/ Gabe has a Pac-Man shirt, and tattoo in the comic. It's a rather funny read.
hey Jean, don't know if this has been asked before but have you got any transcriptions for tapping on your 9 stringers? or are you just using sheet music?

I tried to transcribe one once but it's too **** hard. each note has 4 pieces of information (string, fret, hand, finger) sometimes there are 2-4 fingers on the fretboard on the same moment - I had sat down with my girlfriend at the time, to try and recite it to her and it was taking like 10 minutes to do one measure... we gave up pretty quickly.

I usually learn by ear - but I will have the sheet music handy if I come across a part I'm having problems with.

Papa Shank 08-05-2005 11:35 AM

ah well, I'll figure a way around it thanks anyway :)

Tryxx 08-05-2005 11:38 AM

Have you ever given any thought to a graphite neck or composite fretboard? They're rather awesome to tap on, and the tone is so even and dynamic. I would think they'd be perfect, at least in some situations, for you.

Hey tryxx - the only guys that make 'em (that I know of) are Modulus and Zon... and they both stop at 6-strings. Apparently, you have to have a mold to make a neck - so I think custom one-off would be too expensive.

I've played Michael's hyperbass and it was a smooth neck and very easy to play.

Jean Baudin 08-05-2005 01:27 PM

Okay, just got off the phone with one of the producers at G4TV and they are going to have to reschedule me... apparently, they didn't have me booked as a musical guest (???? ) and they only have music guests on Friday's (I was going to be on Thursday) and they have their friday's booked for the next two months so he's going to get back to me with a new date later. Oh, well - maybe that will give me time to sneak an 11 on the show. :naughty: :naughty: :naughty:

So sorry guys - no G4 appearance this month.
