Roses Are Red - Conversations
Wow, it's been too long in my opinion. This is a great thread and it's a shame it isn't as utilized as it should be. Still, it's back now much to my approval :D Onto the song. It kicks in straight away with a catchy palm-muted and heavy riff, which leads into the full band. The vocals catch my attention, sounding distorted and loud. It works well against the gritty feel of the music, and sends you into the full song. The 2 guitars sound great together, although at some bits one does seem very quiet. Into the chorus, it sounds very radio-friendly and similar to lots of bands around today. The backing vocals add a bit of depth to it, but it doesn't jump out. That being said, it doesn't need to when the chorus sounds great as it is. One thing that puts me off is it's hard to tell when the chorus begins and the verse ends. The music sounds similar all throughout, with no real lead-ins to each other, and the vocals don't differate at all either. The bridge is the most noticable part of the song, using a high melody over a palm-muted riff. It works very well as 2 vocalist part lay over each other, and backing vocals bring them out more. It takes a long time to finish though haha. Overall, an impressive song I think. The music wasn't too original, but fitted with the vocals very well. It is hard to tell parts of the song apart though, which is probably my only gripe about it. 8/10 Selection coming shortly |

My Awesome Compilation - You Need Discipline
Ok, so this song starts off with feedback from the guitar then the drums kick in with the cymbals then all the instruments blast in, the guitar riff is pretty boring i think but the verse then comes in really smoothly and the voclas come in, he sounds good, nice to hear a brit for once :p, after he sings for a while over the full distorted guitar he says the line 'You need Discipline' the riff comes in again with no vocals, i like this part, a drum roll comes in to the chorus which is quite nice, good mix of two vocalists throughout the song, but the chorus is very short... Then a part where the guitar plays a very simple solo part and the voclas come in again, with nice background vocals, reminiscent of TBS, kinda like the end of Your so last summer the chorus is played a few times and it ends... Overall, i didn't find the song catchy, i dooubt i will listen to it again, and it seemed really generic and boring. The chorus was the strong point even though it was too short It wasn't horrible but it wasn't interesting either... 4/10 Selections coming soon. |

Adolescents - Creatures
Begins straight into the song, with vocals and music starting almost immediately. I don't like that style, but I suppose it would sound better with the whole album. Seen as though this song is only about 2 minutes long, the verses are short and sweet, and the gritty vocals fit with the bursts of distortion. The chorus is pretty standard, and in general just seems like a catchy line that fits the song's nature. I like it, and it sounds energetic for a punk song. The message of the song is quite self-explanitory, and works nicely against the loud music. 7/10, a good punk song but the beginning ruined it a little for me. |

Butch Walker - Alicia Amnesia
Sounds like more modern rock than pop-punk based on the intro, though the vocals are definitely more in the vein of pop-punk. Some unique effects on the music that I can't quite pin down, but it sounds pretty cool. Some use of dynamics, which is good though a little predictable, I'm a real sucker for that right now. The vocalist is very good and I like his style, but I feel like he doesn't fit the music well. Like I said, I though this sounded like modern rock until the vocals came in, and I just don't feel like it all comes together right in the band. Pretty decent solo, nothing too show-offy, but it fits well. Real catchy riff driving most of the song too. That's probably the best part. Not much else to say, the pieces were there, but I don't think it was a good whole. 7/10 Halifax - Sydney (Pop-Punk) The Kinison - American Collectibles (Punk/Pop-Punk/Screamo?) Noise Ratchet - New Room (Pop-Punk) The Explosion - No Revolution (Pop-Punk) Scary Kids Scaring Kids - My Darkest Hour (Pop-Punk) Sorry it's all Pop-Punk this time :p |

Noise Ratchet - New Room
I've never heard of this band, so this should be interesting. It has a somewhat Foo Fighters' style intro, with a high riff being played over a heavy melody. When the vocals come in, the guitars are picked very nicely, and over the harsh drumming, it sounds very good. The vocals aren't amazing, but they work well with the upbeat pop-punk style. Another clear feature is the bass, which is very noticeable, somewhat a rarity in pop-punk. After the chorus, verse and another chorus play, there's an equally heavy bridge. It never loses it's energy or pace, which I especially like about this song. The loud shouting in the bridge also sounds great while the music changes slightly after every lyric. It ends very quickly as well, something I think works well because the song is so upbeat. An impressive pop-punk song, with nice rhythms and vocals, and a steady change in melody. 8/10 Selection: I Am The Avalanche - New Disaster (Pop-Punk) NOFX - I Am Going To Hell For This One (Punk Rock/Pop-Punk) Lorene Drive - God Knows I Love You Kid (Melodic Hardcore/Pop-Punk) Cartel - Settle Down (Pop-Punk) |
Lorene Drive - God Knows I love You Kid
Intro didn't do much for me until the riff with all the dissonance started. That sounds really cool. Lots of vocal variation, and I think the only thing I don't like is his really harsh scream, I don't think he has the voice for it. Everything else sounds quite good and I'm very impressed. Lots of effects on the guitar during the transitions too, sounds cool and adds a neat feel to the piece. Breakdown is probably the most generic part of the song, but it fits in the song so it's fine. I just wish it was even crazier. The dynamic work afterwards is real cool too, laid back guitar and soft vocals before jumping back in. Outro guitar work is probably the best guitar on the song, and it sounds really cool. Doesn't sound too tough, but it adds a lot. Overall a really neat song, and very good. If the harsh screaming wasn't in there, or was executed better, I'd consider giving it a higher score, but I think I'll just give it a 9/10 and say it was very enjoyable bar that one aspect.
