The Cars - My Best Friends Girl (3:43)
It starts off with a very light guitar strum and clapping the background. This goes on for a good 30 seconds. Then the vocals start with the same stuff in the background. I like the vocals and the song so far very relaxed. Then another guitar and light drums come in. "There she comes again, she's my best friend's girl, but she used to be mine." Then it goes into a cool solo and back to the light guitars and light drumming. It's a very relaxed, calm song. It's very melodic and the singing is very good. It's basically the same thing musically with an occasional varied riff. There's also a bunch of solos that he breaks out into. Then at around 2:15 a cool little tech noise comes in that sounds really cool. Other than that it's pretty much the same throughout the whole song. Near the end he chants "my best friends girlfriend... used to be mine." I remember hearing about the Cars, they are a pretty popular group from what I recall. I never bothered to check them out. Anyway, I'm really happy with this song, I like it a lot. Haha, thanks again Hunter. Another good band, I'm going to try to find an album now. The song starts with a guitar progression and a beat. Its joined by another guitar after it repeats the riff. Each time the original riff repeats, something new is added, until finally the original riff stops and the song returns to a more basic style, and then repeats with the building on theme. The vocals dont start up until a minute and a half in, and seem to be a sort of English version (heard something about the Thames) of the Woody Guthrie song, albeit a bit sarcastic. The vocalist sounds kind of distant, and isn't singing as much as talking really loud (but not in a 'rap' like manner) with a bit of an attempt at being melodic. The riffs at this point stay the same pretty much, and just repeat with the verses. The song eventually just fades out. Well, I really liked the first part, which was very instrumental, but when the vocalist came in, I didn't really care for his voice, which detracted a bit. Even so, it was still good overall, so I'm giving it a 7/10. The song starts with a plinky-plonky piano bit that sounds like a Mario tune before it lapses into some fairly ordinary ambient/indie music. This section is boring although it is enlivened by someone making funny "Waaaoooo" noises. At about 0:50 the vocals come in. Their sung/spoken style is a bit William Shatner and the guy sounds like Richard Cheese. Theior pretty nonsensical but also really funny with lines like "So perfect and pure and gynaecologically demure" and the music supports the the lyrics very well with it briefly intesifying when the vocals do so. The vocal section doesn't last long but it's awesome and it makes the song. The song briefly goes back into the ambient section before a little closing skit. I recommend this song to anyone with a sense of humour even if it is a bit short. 8/10 Songs: Dresden Dolls - Girl Anachronism (Indie) Mojo Nixon - Drunk-Divorced Floozie (The Ballad of Diana Spencer) (Cow-punk) Good Clean Fun - VRS (Hardcore punk) Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's Dream (Folk) The Child Molesters - I'm Gonna Punch You In The Face (Punk) Soulseek: sketchyjoe E-mail: sketchyjoe@gmail.com |

First off, I really enjoyed this song. It's just fun. The song starts off with a short very country/blues sounding guitar riff. It starts in with a very bluesy guitar and some distant piano, it is a very country sounding song. The song tells a story of, you guessed it, a Drunk Divorced Floozie, who in the song marries rich and ends up dead in the back seat of a guys car unzipping his pants. The guitar work is very much basic blues kind of stuff. The singer has the perfect voice for this kind of song, it's a great voice. This song really appeals to me. I kind of grew up around similar music so this connects. I really enjoy the song as a whole and I do plan on listening to more Mojo. Song starts with a neat little distorted guitar intro, but is soon joined in by a heavy drum beat, and this is quickly followed by vocals, which are the somewhat standard yelling hardcore stuff. Although the guitar overall is melodic, this is somewhat countered by the distortion. A little over a minute in, there is a very soft bridge, but the song briefly returns to the heaviness, and then gets into a light, more easy going part. The vocalist isn't really singing for most of it, just making "di ddi di ddoo" like sounds. The lighter part lasts maybe a minute or so before returning to what I guess could be called the normal riff, which it continues with before a very abrupt stop. I didn't really connect with the song. While I do like some hardcore, this one didn't really seem to be anything special... 5/10. The La De Das - How Is The Air Up There
This song sounds like every other song like it I've ever heard. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's got a really catchy riff that's really familiar, little organ bits after each line like Stuck Inside A Mobile With, the incessant shaker in the background, the brief pause before the chorus where there's a shout of "Hey!" This song sounds like the soundtrack to every documentary montage about the 60s and/or summer ever made. The lyrics are decent, the vocals fit the song perfectly, this is a great pop song that's short enough not to outstay it's welcome although as the first time you hear it sounds like the millionth it doesn't bear repeat listenings. 7/10 Choose from: Dresden Dolls - Girl Anachronism (Indie) Good Clean Fun - VRS (Hardcore punk) Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's Dream (Folk) The Child Molesters - I'm Gonna Punch You In The Face (Punk) Meg Lee Chin - Nazi Punks **** Off (Electro-Industrial) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |

This song is alright. It wasn't "hardcore", more just plain punk. It's hard to understand the lyrics, but the chorus was cool when it went "they wanna be punk, they wanna be cool". that was pretty catchy. there's a lot of backup vocals. its just powerchords through the whole song, though. at 1:11, there's a bridge where they switch it up a bit, but that's about it. I would say its a pretty ordinary band with a pretty ordinary sound. The song begins with a few quick drum-beats before the intro kicks in which is catchy and kind of cool with almost a funky tinge to it. A bit poppy maybe, but good nonetheless. This continues for about 20 seconds or so with a couple of variations by which time you're nodding your head along to it. So far so good. Then the singer opens his mouth and it all turns to ****. I don't know whose idea it was to have someone with down-syndrome do the vocals but you think someone in the band might have said "Hang on a minute guys, this singer couldn't be whinier if he had a bottle of Pinot Grigio shoved up his arse. Maybe we should hire a proper vocalist." This guys voices sets me on edge. Every syllable is elongated, every word mangled, until only the pure essence of whininess remains. The music automatically turns to generic rubbish seemingly in protest. I seriously have no clue what this guy is saying. I think I caught the word 'feeling' but it might have been 'squealing' or 'Darjeeling' or any other similar sounding words. The music wisely returns to the original riff when the vocals stop but even that can't save this now. The mongoloid up-front has got the song in his whiny death-grip and won't let go until everyone grasps the deep emotional impact of what he is saying which is "EEEEEEEEE AAEEEEEE EEEEEE AOOOOEEEEEE!" apparently. "ALLALALAAL LLLLLAAAAA EEEEE UUUUHHH EEEE UUUUHHH!" Then suddenly another vocalist comes in, this one taking the "Retarded Sergeant Major with a really sticky toffee in his mouth approach." Equally incomprehensible, equally awful. This makes for some interesting and witty vocal interplay to end the song over the by now horrendously generic guitar blasts and drum-beats "DUH! MUHDUHDUUH MUHDUH!" "EEEEEE! EEEEAEEEEE!" MUHDUHDUHDUH!" Sheer lyrical genius. I don't understand the children laughter at the beginning. I love hearing so many different instruments, souded like saxophone and kazoo and some other cool shit. His singing reminds me of some rockabilly band. Hearing the piano in the background is cool. I like the way it busts into the chorus. I wish I could tell what they guy was saying. The singing in the background adds alot to the song. The melody to this song is really catchy and unique. The guy with the deep voice adding whatever he's adding is kind of lame. The clarinet solo is so amazing. I was totally blown away to hear that. The piano solo sounds like some weird honky-tonk show. Did he just say "I'm a fag, I'm a jew!"? Weird. But that part where he sang alone was cool. It's weird that a band that sounds so weird and cool can be really defined as punk. I'd probably classify them as "Unclassifiable" I like the alternating shouts of Joy, it sounds really cool. The weird instrument at the end sounds awesome but I've got no idea what it is. All in all, I think this is going one of my new favorite bands. 9.5/10 Reccomendations: Cheap Sex- A Walking Disease (punk) Kid Dynamite- Fuckuturn (punk) Devo- Mongoloid (electronic/punk/new wave) Propagandhi- Stick the Fucking Flag up your goddamn ass you sonofabitch |
Devo - Mongoloid
The song starts out with a repetative bass riff, that cycles a few times, before the drums are added almost 30 seconds in, and soon followed by the guitar. A little synth part starts up after the guitars, and ceases as the vocals start. The vocals are somewhat echoed, and are supposed to be slightly computerized sounding I think. The riff changes for the chorus, but then goes back afterwards. Untill almost three minutes into the song, those are the only two riffs that have played, but finally a synth solo come in, and then the vocals sing one more verse and a bit of the chorus, but with the synth still playing, and then ends with the synth fading out. Mongoloid can refer to an Asian, or someone with down syndrom, and judging by the lyrics, I think its the latter in the song, but beyond that, I didn't find much depth... (what do you expect from the guys who did Whip It?). Even so, the beat and riffs are really catchy, and the song is very easy to like, so I give it a 9/10 :thumb: Choices Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries [German Opera] The Billy Nayer Show - Love Smiles [Werid Indie Rock] The Koobas - The First Cut is the Deepest [60's Garage/Psychedelic] Kubla Khan - Revolution II [60's Garage] Download Here or IM me for em. |

Songs starts off with a pretty awesome bass intro. Then the drums come in and then the guitar. The guitar just strums a bit and then the vocals. The vocals sound tough, sort of similar to Abrasive Wheel's vocalist. The guitar goes back to strumming and the the drums keep the same roll-type they have since the beginning. The guitar occasionally goes into a different lick and he uses a lot of revert. They also seem very experimental with the guitar and at some points in the song it gets sort of annoying. There is a pretty long pause where he experiments then there's a type of breakdown and gets right back into it. It sort of "builds up." Then it just goes into purely instrumental and I really, really like the guitar that it has in the end. It's very awesome sounding. It really does turn this song around for the better. Then there's clapping at the end. All in all it's talented and I like the ending. I'm more interested in them than I like it. It's good stuff though. This song starts with a fast drum beat, with plenty of feedback which seems to stay in the background the entire time. The drum beat is so repetitive, it gave me a headache. And you cant really understand the singer until all the other instruments stop in the end. The guitar is as repetitive as the drums, im not sure if there was more than one riff in the entire song. Seriously, this is a good tune to begin with, and I thought the Goldfinger version was good, but this version is definetly my favorite of them all. This version starts with some weird noise. The riffs are the same but they sound a bit muddier. The thing that stands out the most is the singer doesn't sing it on the notes you'd expect. I think that's what makes this version stand out above the others. The sped up bit is also amazing but seems to slow down around the "war machine" line. They cut the german bit which is kinda dissapointing but the song is still awesome without it. The "oh oohs" get annoying after a bit but I can disregard it enough. The slow talked bit is just as good as always and the echo really adds alot to it. The bit of talking at the end is lame too. 8/10 Reccomendations: Cheap Sex- A Walking Disease (punk) Kid Dynamite- Fuckuturn (punk) Propagandhi- Stick the Fucking Flag up your goddamn ass you sonofabitch None More Black- Genuine Malaise and Misery (punk) |

If you've heard any punk song you know how this song goes, big chord, build-up on drums and and bass with some little guitar parts before the vocals come in with some more big chords then a little drum-roll, into the fast section with intermittent background vocals, then back to the previous section, then a different bit with more a more staccato rhythm then a brief solo then more vocals with a different guitar parts and more background vocals before finishing on "FUCK YOU!" Punk rock or what? This song was technically fine, but it was far too conventional. Every part sounded like a different punk song patched together. The definition of "nothing special". 5/10 Choose from: Black Market Baby - America's Youth (80s Hardcore) Dresden Dolls - Girl Anachronism (Indie) Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's Dream (Folk) The Child Molesters - I'm Gonna Punch You In The Face (Punk) Meg Lee Chin - Nazi Punks Fuck Off (Electro-Industrial) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |
Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's Dream (5:03)
I hadn't heard Bob Dylan yet and that's not good. It starts off in a simple chord stroke acoustic. The vocals then come in almost immediately. "We're riding on a train going west." I really like the guitar and his voice. The same progression continues throughout most of the song. He carries his voice out a lot too which is very cool. I love folk so this sounds really awesome to me. Occasionally he plays a riff or two but basically the same chord progression carries throughout the entire song. Around 3 minutes in a harmonica comes in and plays sort of a country tune. It goes for a while and it sounds very awesome. "And as easy it was to tell black from white, it was all that easy to tell wrong from right." The song closes out with the harmonica and guitar stroke. Amazing song. I'm downloading one of his albums now. The song starts with cymbals building up the tension before the music and and vocals kick in sharply at the same time. The music is pretty typical folk-punk with a cool rolling rhythm. There's dual vocals alternating between some dude screaming and a girl singing softly. The contrast between the voices works well although the guys voice did sound a bit forced without the roughness of voice that sounds more natural in bands like Against Me! or Ghost Mice. The music is is really catchy and it's incessant pace continues until about 1:20 when there's a slower quiet section which provides some respite before going back into the chorus where they both sing at the same time then just as quickly as the music starts it stops again. This song is pretty cool. The music was good and although the guys vocals did grate a little it's a short enough song not to outstay it's welcome. If you like the genre you'll probably like this song. 7/10 Choose from: Johnny Cash - I've Been Everywhere (Country) Black Market Baby - America's Youth (80s Hardcore) Dresden Dolls - Girl Anachronism (Indie) The Child Molesters - I'm Gonna Punch You In The Face (Punk) Meg Lee Chin - Nazi Punks Fuck Off (Electro-Industrial) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |

I never heard these gals before and I was really amazed by the music. I really like the keys and how they repeate over again, kind of gives it an erie feel. However I didnt really enjoyEmo/Horror/ lyrics. Personally I dont enjoy them but besides that I thought the song was great. This song begins with some slow acoustic guitar and vocals which do a good job of leading into the song. The drums kick in at about 45 seconds in. Throughout the song there seems to be either a woodwind instrument or strange fiddle type thing, which are a cool touch that i think make the song authentically "celtic". The whole thing reminds me of a mellowed out Flogging Molly song. At about 3:31 there is an awesome solo by the woodwind instrument that goes until the song ends a minute later. Although my personal preference is Flogging Molly and the Real McKenzies, anyone who appreciates the celtic/irish/punk scene should definately check this one out. I've heard little from the White Stripes, just thier main hits and it was 50/50 with most, some were good, and some were bad. This song starts off with an acoustic guitar, quickly joined with the guy's voice and drums. The music is really simple. I don't like the guy's voice much, but the general backing music is well done and very jumpy. The actual music doesn't change much, this seems like a really basic song. The song goes into a slower softer bridge. Then back into the chours. Overall it is kind of boring, but not too bad. 6/10 Reccommendations Caliban - Tipsy Sailor (Acoutsic Celtic, duo made from Tempest members) Tempest - Byker Hill (Celtic Rock) !!! - The Step (Indie/Dance Punk) Three Hanks (Hank Williams, Sr, Jr, III) - I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive (Country) Yes I know the rules about keeping it mostly punk, but I wanted to whore Tempest more. |

Of the Williams country dynasty I'm only really familiar with Hank Williams Sr who I know died at 29 in 1953 so this song was quite strange hearing Hank Williams III singing with his long-dead grandfather. Musically this song is pretty standard country fare with an enjoyable mix of piano and guitar which complements the vocals well. What really makes this song is the contrast between the three different voices and how they work together sometimes on their own and sometimes in harmony. The lyrics are also pretty standard country-stuff. This song definitely won't convert anyone who dislikes country but I definitely enjoyed it. 7/10 Choose from: Apple Gabriel - The Times They are A-Changin' (Reggae) Madeline - I Left the Light On (Folk) Black Market Baby - America's Youth (80s Hardcore) The Child Molesters - I'm Gonna Punch You In The Face (Punk) Meg Lee Chin - Nazi Punks fuck Off (Electro-Industrial) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |

I love 80's hardcore, so I need to expand my horizons a bit within it. It starts off with drums then quickly into a lighter guitar. The vocals are light but I like them. "16 forever, never grow older." I really like the lyrics. They are about America's youth and how pathetic we are. It breaks into a solo about 1:30 minutes in. Then it goes back into the same guitar chords that have been playing since the beginning. "No hope! For America's Youth" and it ends on the vocals abruptly "no hope!" Awesome song. I'm not a big hardcore fan but I thought I'd give this a try. This song starts off with a pretty heavy riff before the shouty vocals come in. I didn't like the vocals but the riff that followed each line was pretty cool although the line-riff repeat structure got boring quickly so I was pleased when the music changed after about 50 seconds before everything abruptly stopped and the guitar and the drums built-up to a much heavier section that was a lot better as their was less of the shouty guy. The music changed again after this with more heavy riffs and more of the shouty guy in a scetion that went on far too long before a really long boring quiet outro. I think my problem is that I can't listen to hardcore seriously after hearing xOneWayx. I can see how people would enjoy this song and it was pretty cool musically in parts but I endured it rather than enjoyed it. 5/10 Choose from: Apple Gabriel - The Times They are A-Changin' (Reggae) Madeline - I Left the Light On (Folk) Wat Tyler - The Vicar And I (Punk) The Child Molesters - I'm Gonna Punch You In The Face (Punk) Meg Lee Chin - Nazi Punks Fuck Off (Electro-Industrial) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |
CHILD MOLESTERS - I'm Gonna Punch You In The Face
Well, I downloaded this song basically for 2 reasons: 1st because the title is cool and also the band name, so it made me wanna listen to it and 2nd because all the other songs sucked except the Wat Tyler one (but I had already reviewed a song by them). Well, so this song starts with a little laughing and just then, the instruments in a paused intro. Then, the vocals enter which seem Matt Freeman with a developed lung cancer and a scourer through his throat, but they're actually better than Matt's in some strange way. The song, if you didn't guess is about the singer really wanting to punch someone in the face if that someone crosses his path, making his nose bleed, etc etc, whatever happens when you punch someone in the face. After the verse and the chorus (punch in the face etc...) it comes a really cool riff, with the paused intro in the background and then a very nice solo, 80's punk style (or I think so). Then again the chorus, the cool riff and the end. Cool song, original and such, but the vocals could be less of "tough guy" I don't really like that style of vocals, but overall hmmm...a 7.5 My recommendations: The Toy Dolls - Eine Kleine Nacht Music [Mozart cover] (classical-acoustic-cool-punk) (yes I'm getting annoying by whoring this band but if you don't like them, chances are that you suck) Bigwig - Who Am I To Say (better-than-you-pop-punk) (same as the band above) Non Servium - Punks y Skins (Spanish punk/oi) (to say something about them, they're probably the only spanish punk band that I love) Randy - Working Class Radio (weird-similar-to-rock-garage-punk-but-also-cool-as-hell) The Varukers - Die For Your Government (Generic-and-stereotypical-but-kinda-cool-street-punk) Here you've got all the songs so you can choose one: http://s16.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0H8E9DZ2VGGM40XG22XGEBEARJ |

I heard something from them like three or four years ago. I think. Anyway. It starts off with a bunch of feedback. Then goes into heavy, but octave-like guitar. The vocals are cool and they come in about 20 seconds into the song. The song goes up and down a lot. I like it because it combines heavy and light guitar at the same time. I also like the lyrics "why don't we talk about it, lets not fight about it." Then it goes into a cool guitar solo which really accents the song. It ends in chanting "hey, hey, hey it's beautiful day." It ends in an awesome riff. This band totally rules and the lyrics are, to my surprise very excellent. However the vocals just seem like they could have so much more potential. 8/10. Recommendations: The Epileptics - Alive All Your Life [Anarcho] Subhumans - Apathy [Anarcho] Woody Guthrie - This Land [Political/Folk] |
Woody Gunthrie - This Land
This is one of those songs that most people have hearss in one way or another at some point, although I remember the JibJab parody much better. The song starts off with a little guitar intro, and then the vocals come in. The first verse I would think everyone knows. The recording quality isn't that great, and the vocals are too loud in comparison to the guitar, which is the only instrument. The guitar is pretty basic, sounds like a repetative pattern. Well, this song really isn't my thing, but still, its a classic, and I can't justify being overtly negative. It does however have a way of getting stuck in ones head... 6/10 Choices The Koobas - The First Cut is the Deepest [60's Psych] Kubla Khan - Revolution II [60's Garage] Max Splodge - Desert Island Joe [Its from an Oi! comp, but it sounds more like Alvin and the Chipmunks] The Troggs - Lost Girl [60's Psych] xx=40 or IM me for em. |

The only Troggs song I know is the Troggs song everyone knows; Wild Thing so I wanted to hear what some of their other stuff was like. The song starts with a pretty cool rolling rhythm before the vocals come in. The vocals annoyed me as they were overly soft and it sounded like the guy was putting on a funny voice. The lyrics were also pretty trite. It almost sounds as if it's a parody of these sort of songs then the music fades out with the vocals in the exact same way as it does in Wild Thing and and another vocalist comes in. This guy is a lot more enthusiastic and the comparison between the two voices works well. The music is also a punchier at this point but it soon goes back into the almost tribal music of before. This repeats once before going into a solo which didn't really fit into the song then it repeats the first part again then ends with another bad solo. I liked this song. I got used to the first guys voice in the end as it worked well with the rest of the song. The music was good except for the solos which didn't really fit in but overall I enjoyed this song. 8/10 Choose from: Apple Gabriel - The Times They are A-Changin' (Reggae) Madeline - I Left the Light On (Folk) Wat Tyler - The Vicar And I (Punk) Meg Lee Chin - Nazi Punks Fuck Off (Electro-Industrial) Mad Sin - Conquer the World (Psychobilly) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |
Madeline - I Left the Light On
The song starts up with a easy going acoustic guitar accompinied by clapping hands. The guitar is pretty melodic, but sounds like it might be slightly muted. A female vocalist comes in. She has a very pretty, melodic voice. About a minute in, another vocalist joins in for what might be the chorus, which sounds to go "doo wop doo wop". This vocalist isn't as melodic though, and is a bit out of sync with the first, but it works well for the song. It also sounds like more clapping hhas come in, and is also a bit off set. The song ends with some applause. Hmm... not really the kind of music I listen to much, but I rather enjoyed it nontheless. 8/10. Choices The Bricats - Last Caress [Swing-a-Billy] Asmodeus - Last Caress [Psycho -Billy] Aerial M - Last Caress [Psychedelic] *Not Sure* - Last Caress [Acoustic Rock] Download here xx=42, or IM me... |
As I did with the last review, I wanted to listen to all the songs before choosing one. So I listened to the Aerial M one...and it sucked (easy way to say I didn't liked it). So then I thought, next one: The Bricats. And I loved it so I didn't listen to any other.
THE BRICATS - Last Caress So the song starts with a jazzy drum thingie which reminded me to NOFX's Flossing A Dead Horse and just then a swingie bass line followed by some whistle and a swingie choir thing. So this is a jazzy/swingie song and as soon as I listened to the lyrics I started laughing because I thought hahaha this doesn't fit! Imagine the happy swing with the so known Mifits vocals: "I have something to say I killed your baby today" and a cool variation "I raped your hamster today". Well after the chorus (which is kinda cool because of its originality in the music even when it's a cover and the guitar arpeggios every now and then), the song changes a bit with a cool guitar low riff and the swing bass with some trumpets and such (instrumental part), then the dibbi dibbi dibbi dibbi thing (that choir thing I mentioned before), chorus again and the outro with some cool variations in the vocals and that typical outro where somone says (in this case) one last careeeeess, and several voices follow him up, ending with a strange to describe kind of aaaah (kinda punky reminder). Yes, a cover song, but original as hell, and if you like the Misfits version and have a wide music taste I'm sure you'll love it: 8/10 (because it's a cover anyway and it only has 3 parts i took a little points) My recommendations: Time to whore some Spanish bands! Non Servium - Punks y skins (Spanish punk/oi) (I don't think I need to translate this) Ska-P - El vals del obrero (Spanish ska) (Worker's waltz, the translation) Celtas Cortos - Si no me veo no me creo (Spanish celtic/folky rock) (If I couldn't see me I wouldn't believe me, weird translation because it's a useful expression) And for you Spanish haters: Toy Dolls - The Devil Went Down To Scunthorpe (Punk cover of an old song. AWESOME guitar work and not Toy Dolls typical vocals but kind of) You can download it here: http://s16.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1H0XIAW6U7HBR1RMLBS0G712IR or add me on soulseek: albert_bass. |
Ska-P - Some Spanish Crap
This song doesn't start as a ska song. It starts sounding like it should be sung by some mexican dude in a big hat underneath a hot chicks window. So far, so Spanish. At about 20 seconds the music gets more ska-like with choppy guitars and a cool bassline the vocals get a bit faster to match the music too. At about 0:55 the drums kick-in and it goes in to full all-out ska mode. At about 1:10 the horns and keys kick-in for a faster punk section before it slows down with a little guitar solo. It took me about 2 seconds that the solo is just Jello's vocals from the bit at the end of Chemical Warfare. "The stuff country club, effervescent ladies so carefree" It sounds pretty cool and ends with a little drum-fill going back into another the first ska section and it repeats the first bit of the song. After the bit with keys it goes into a new bit, not ripped off from an old punk this time (I don't recognise it if it was) before another different slower ska section. There's more repetition before a false ending then more repetition and then the real ending. This song is quite repetitive but it's catchy so that doesn't matter. All the sections are cool, the vocals are good and I even understood some of the words (They said Sombrero at one point.) I enjoyed this song and if you like catchy ska-punk you will too. 8/10 Choose from: Apple Gabriel - The Times They are A-Changin' (Reggae) Wat Tyler - The Vicar And I (Punk) Meg Lee Chin - Nazi Punks Fuck Off (Electro-Industrial) Mad Sin - Conquer the World (Psychobilly) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |
Wat Tyler - The Vicar and I
The song starts off immediatly with the vocals, a nice upbeat guitar, some drums in the back, and I think there is a mild bass in the back as well. There is a solo about half way through that sounds like a kazoo... Overall, the music seems to be the same thing rather reptativly. The vocals are very clear and easy to figure out, starting out as being about about a 'innocent'? visit with the local vicar, and having tea. Soon, it progresses to drunkenness, drugs and such, and near the end 'buggery'. About a minute in, the vocals change briefly to the sort of cliche proper british accent, although its sung with an almost operatic tone, and is what seems to be the chorus. I like it. The song was rather humerous, and very easy to enjoy. 9/10.
