I've heard some Arcturus before (thanks to Per Ardua), and liked it.
Arcturus - Wintry Grey - 2:30 Starts off with some good, mid-paced double bass and fairly melodic guitar, with what sounds like synth over the top. Hymnal-like vocals come in after 5 seconds; they're pretty good, and the guitar is doing some good things in the background (either a subdued solo, or a very long, fairly slow riff). Vocal change-up at around 0:50 to raspy, black metal vocals. After this section, the drums get very dramatic, with exaggerated cymbal sounds and hollow beats - very Ben Hur. Hymnal vocals come in again around 1:45, and they've got some good harmonies going when they go high. Whispered vocals and what seem to be bells then begin - the bells seem rather out of place. Spoken word vocals follow, and then more black metal rasping. All of this over almost constant double bass, which I like. Very dramatic again around 3:40 - reminding me of Ben Hur and other such epics, and there are sounds of a storm, and sloshing water, in the background. Actual music cuts out around 4:29, and thunder ends the song. I enjoyed that, 8.5/10 Would I listen to more of the same band? Yep. Denis Leary - Asshole
I couldn't resist. I'm a pretty big fan of Denis Leary. He's a hilariously cynical guy, and he never fails to bring his wit into his movies and stand-up. But this is the first time I've ever heard any of his entrees into music. And let me tell you, it didn't disappoint.
First of all, this song... is not gonna be about the music, it's the lyrics that are important in a song like this. And they do not fail to be hilariously awesome. It's filled with Leary's clever wit, except now they rhyme! The basic gist of the song is Leary singing to us about all the ways he is, in fact, a pretty big asshole. One example... "Sometimes I park in the handicapped... spaces/ While handicapped people, make handicapped... faces..." It may not sound funny written down, but trust me, hearing it with Leary's intense yelling, it is great! One note about the music, while most of the song is a standard acoustic riff with drums in the back, the chorus is actually pretty catchy. Their are multiple voices being used, and you will find yourself singing along! Beats any of Adam Sandler's stuff to the ground... How could I give it any less but a 10/10? Comic Genius! Suggestions: Tito & Tarantula - After Dark (South-of-the-border-ish reggae- blues rock) Wall Of Voodoo - Mexican Radio (Catchy Alt. rock/ reggae?) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Don't Forget Me (Reggae- bass driven rock) |
i would just liek to interject and say that denis leary = the man

It's already 5 hrs since then, and nobody took dibs... :/

Leary is good, but he seemed to steal a lot of Bill Hicks' material.

No idea what to expect.
Tito and Tarantula - After Dark - 2:30 Starts off with burst of clean electric guitar, before going in a mix of a slow, uncomplicated bassline and gently picked guitar. The music builds with the vocals on the verses, the vocals being clean; a decent voice, but nothing special. Around 1:18, what is either a bridge or a chorus, I don't know yet, begins, with the vocals rising in intensity, along with the guitars. Despite this, it stays a rather mellow song, even through the line about knocking on the devil's door. From around 2:17, there's a pretty cool, relaxed, electric guitar solo, which I like. Might have a slight wah effect on it, I'm not sure. A more subtle version of the solo carries on in the background of the next verse, while all the instruments build, before the song becomes quieter than it ever has before. And we go out on a final shout of "after daaaaaaaaaark", over a mini-solo and swelling bass and guitar. 6/10 It was pretty good, but the first half let it down. I liked the slow, relaxed solo though Would I listen to more of the same band? Maybe. Sorry about that, I had a limit set on upload kbps. Killed it when I realised who it was that was downloading though.

Ah, no problem. :)
Devin Townsend - Down and Under Song starts off with an acoustic guitar playing a nice riff, which i like. Along with an acoustic solo which soon fades out. At about 00:41 a kick drum enters, being hit on every other beat. Which is accompanied by a closed hi-hat beat. At about 1:22 the drums really come in with a full beat. Along with a distorted guitar playing the same riff, plus some synths along with the music. The song really picks up energy here. I like it alot. At 2:05, the guitar riff changes to a heavier riff, along with a synth. The vocals are somewhat high, and sung particularly well, though it's hard to make out what he is saying. At about 2:50 the song returns to the same riff from the beginning of the song but with distortion. At about 3:00 the song gets quiet again, with half of the acoustic riff and half of the acoustic riff, but distorted added together. The song continues to go full blast on the the distorted riff plus the synths until it ends. 8.5/10 It was put together very well, i enjoyed it. I would definitely look into more stuff by Devin Townsend. Songs... OK, could'nt find the other three so I'm gonna review...
Finntroll - Jaktens Tid Cymbal intro, distorted guitar chord and some hymnal vocals. Then the vocalist (typical black metal rasp) comes in singing over a typically heavy riff, with... urrr... kind of upbeat polka synth. Nice fast drumming. Return of the hymnal vocals for a sort of chorus. Repeat. Ah, a break with a better riff and a much more aggressive sound. The vocalist sound much more in place here without the god**** synth. This part is pretty cool. Nuts, the synth is back and there is a repeat of the verse. The mountain yodell/hymnal vocals have made a return and a couple of distorted chords signal the end. Overall: Didn't like the synth polka part or the yodell/hymnal vocal parts, but the break without the synth was pretty good. In fact it saved the song. 5/10 Probably wouldn't check out anything else by them, cos I HATED that synth!!! My suggestions: Monster Magnet - Space Lord (good time rock n roll, catchy) Khanate - Skin Coat (Heavy, slow, doom metal) Weapons of Brass Destruction - Get your ska out of my drive(Local band, Ska-punk-hardcore, can be found in the audio arena forum) |

Monster Magnet - Space Lord
Nice little acoustic and bass drum part. Sounds like this is nu-metal based entirlyt on the intro. The voice is not what I expected. It has something to it. sounds kind of like a blues singer. I really dig when the other guitar comes in and the drums pick up. This is good music for fans of classic rock. All very repetitive but pretty good. Here's the loud part (chorus I suppose) it's grovvin. The after chorus though with the phaser is what I really like. I like how the vocals right after the chorus sound like they're through a tin can. This song has it's fair share of "Yeah!"s but they fit. It's a really driving song. Thus far I haven't heard anything to really impress me but nothing to really turn me off. The chorus guitar part is pretty rockin'. The guitar solo is nothing special. Lot's of effects and like 4 notes but it works. The song has a really cool ending. It's like the song is being flushed down the toilet. This song was nothign special but not bad. I won't download anymore but I'll keep this. Overall it just didn't have the kind of complexities or innovations I like to hear in my music. 6/10 Ariaphonics - Summer Moon or Divine Light (http://music.download.com/ariaphonics/3600-8266_32-100331803.html) It's pink floyd meets opera. Very cool. You haven't heard them. Well, maybe. |

starts with beeping and drums, not bad, joined by a guitar that plays a nice all around riff. then comes the opera. a great voice, singing in russian (i think) a lot of strange techno backing to the voice. god, its not often you hear a voice that clear. an instrumental break, and a voice describing the formation of a baby. more of that godly voice with a heavy drum beat. the guitar is really great, while not challenging or overpowering. drum fill, then a more upbeat section. no lyrics, just drums and synth violin comes in and plays an interesting melody. the violin drops out and is replaced by the opera which finishes the song
great vocals, a lot of stange melody. i wish i couldve understood the lyrics, they sounded like they were from the heart. kinda pink floyd meets orgy meets opera, 8/10 The Who-Substitute Ministry-Warp City Type O Negative-Be My Druidess Primus-Frizzle Fry |

The Who - Substitute
'K, starts up with a nice guitar intro with a conic sense in it. Not after long, the lines "You think we look really good together/You think my shoes are made of leather", and you understand that this song is a one big joke... Well, not exactly, but it's pretty comic anyways. The bass, drums and guitars are going well together, and are serving only as a background to the vocals. Generally, there's not much to say anymore - nice background music, pretty nice bridge with the bass there between the pre-chorus and the chorus, verse, chorus again, end of song. Nice guitar riffs, nice bass and drums fills. That's all for this song. Although it's really not my type, I enjoyed the song pretty much... :) I'd give it an 8/10, but just because I listened to Nirvana after this, and it made me wonder how I could listen to this old-school country music... Still, I enjoyed the song pretty much. ------------- Soilwork - Distortion Sleep[Melodic Death Metal] Orphaned Land - The Kiss Of Babylon[Death Metal] Orphaned Land - The Beloved's Cry[Doom Metal] Crematory - Eyes Of Suffering[Melodic Death Metal(I suppose, not sure)] W.A.S.P - Helion[Hard Rock] Alice Cooper - The Black Widow[Hard Rock] Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare[Hard Rock] Helloween - Hocus Pocus[Instrumental, Heavy Metal] |

Never heard of this band before, so I don't know what to expect (except Doom Metal). So, here goes... Wind and waves set the atmosphere. Nice acoustic intro, haunting, chilling effect. Keyboard in the background. Low vocals, slow, dreamy but all the while dark. This is quite a sad song. A sort of hint at hope in the singers voice. Female backing vocals add an even more haunting quality to the song. It's getting a bit repetitive now, and I'm losing interest waiting for the metal bit. Nice acoustic work though. The male/female vocals have doubled up now. Piano part now. Guitar solo. Nothing new, but it fits the mood of the song. The vocals are singing over the solo now, the piano plays a sad tune and the song fades away. I realise that there is no metal bit. I think that it's about the loss of a loved one and the person left behind contemplating giving up/suicide (correct me if I'm wrong). Wouldn't have said it was doom metal, as it seemed to be severly lacking in the metal department. That said, it was a very sad emotional song and was put together well. The acoustic work was very good, the singers voice suitably sultry and a fitting solo to end it. All in all 8/10. :thumb: Would I listen to more of the band? Yes, to see if there is a metal side to them. My songs: The Dillinger Escape Plan - Pig Latin (Math-metal with Mike Patton as the vocalist) God Forbid - Antihero (New Death Metal, with cool solos) |

I've avoided these guys so far, though I've heard good things about them. Actually, it was because I'd heard so many good things that I avoided them - one article I read praised them so horribly and completely it made me hate the band.
God Forbid - Antihero - 3:57 Starts off with a fairly impressive thrashy riff..and carries on like that, really. Up to 0:35, it's high-class, heavy metal/thrash goodness, I like it. At 0:35 however, the vocals come in, and I'm less impressed. They're not especially bad, but they sound too much like those of a lot of other "NWOAHM" bands that have come out recently; Chimaira, Shadow's Fall, etc. They're just not that great, and what's worse, the guitars aren't playing anywhere near as well when the guy is singing. Still, at 1:04, the vocals stop, and we get another display of reasonably impressive guitar play, with a mini-solo, if only for 10 seconds. A good, longer, instrumental part, with nice solos, from about 2:15 til 3:02. Vocals come back in, and continue right through to the end. I'd say it was good guitar, reduced in greatness by what struck me as mediocre songwriting, and the other three elements of the band (vocals, bass, drums) being not so good. I didn't detect a hint of death metal, either. 5/10 Would I listen to more of the same band? I'm not in any hurry too, but they're good enough to fill an afternoon if ever I'm stuck for something to listen to. Cult of luna - Circle
Strummed acoustic chords with another guitar coming in playing a solo of sorts. Gets a bit boring after a while as there seems to be no change in it. Aha! Some heavier louder chords! The song is getting going now, still with a slow, stomping pace to it. Sense of impending doom. Nice chord progression. Break in it with a synth build up then BANG!!! The heavy choirds come in and a lovely charming sounding man begins to scream. This is pretty **** cool. Still has that nice downtrodden feel to it. A sort of pent up release of agression. I like the singer, he's hacked off about something. Cant tell what it is he's saying but I can get the general idea. I think this is the chorus now, really agressive, cathartic feel to it, like the vocalist is letting go. I believe he means what he says. This is really pretty good and makes me feel good in a strange masochistic kind of way. There is one last distorted chord which fades away to reveal the acopustic intro chords and the solo. The chords too leave and only the sad, sad solo remains. Overall: Wow! I really liked that. Kind of a soundtrack to the apocalypse if ever there was one. The fact that this song is 8:10 could have meant it dragged on in places, and if I'm honest I think that the intro could have been a bit shorter but hey! What do I know??? When the distortion kicked in the song changed from sad to cathartic - a good song to vent off agression to. 9.5/10, only the length of the intro prevents it from getting the full whack Would I listen to more of this band? 9.5/10, hmm lets think about this... Khanate - Skin Coat
Song starts off extremely slow and sludgey with screams. It sounds like the guitarist is just improvising right now. At about 2:10 the guitar riff changes to a very riff with the drums very little drums in the background. At about 3:10 the guitars seem to go back to improvisation (atleast that's what it sounds like) At about 4:10 the song picks up a little speed with a guitar riff that is a little faster along with more consistant drumming. At about 5:10, there is a clean part which sounds like nothing really, soon the drums enter along with vocals. The vocalist is talking about staying warm in his skin coat. This part is extremely boring. At 7:21 the clean riff becomes distorted, the drums and the vocals stay the same though. At 9:05 the song takes a turn to the weird with just drums, they use a swell effect up until the song fades out on this. This song gets a 2/10. It seems that it was just improvised with the exception of a few measures. The only plus about it was, the vocalist sounded like Golem (from the Lord of the Rings :p ) Songs....
