You should. It's a great class :D
I loved it, plus my bass teacher was fucking gorgeous. So that made it a whole lot better.
He left half way through the year though :(.

Good luck with it.
It's easy peasy, not meaning to sound big headed but it was!!

Dead Star 08-03-2006 03:27 PM

I'll have a chat with my sisters about it, see what they say.

Then probably ignore their advice, and go for it.

music AS spoilt my love for music, and for quite a while after finishing the course I was very reluctant to pick up my guitar at all.

Jon 08-03-2006 04:20 PM

Music Tech sounds cool, no worries there dude.

I didn't do Music GCSE, and thats all the lower there is =/

Dead Star 08-03-2006 04:22 PM

Oh, I don't know how the English System goes.

I thought AS was like, Advanced Higher.

So why's AS music so bad?

Brew 08-03-2006 04:26 PM

Music Tech is a good course, its a shame EdExcel are scrapping it by 2010 (they're scrapping Music aswell)

Jon 08-03-2006 04:36 PM

AS Music forces you to scrutinize every little detail of the music and assumes that there is a reason for every note being on the page, not just "because it sounds good".

My favourite example, from possibly the second week of Year 12 was:
"Why does Mozart use a minim in bar 3 beat 1-2?"

The answer was, not because it sounds nice, but because it "suspends the harmonic rhythm.

What the fuck?

I don't think Johnny Ramone could even pronounce harmonic rhythm, much less spell it, understand it or implement it.

In conclusion you go into the year saying "yeah, I like a bit of classical and Jazz, why not?", and you go out wanting to die :)

ps, bebop is not a real genre.

Ah I see. I too hate having to over analyse music.

I'm sure mozart sat there and thought "yes, this Minim 3 really helps to suspend the harmonic rhythm of the piece" when he was writing it

Jon 08-03-2006 04:48 PM

On the plus side you do learn some useful stuff (basslines, thingy harmony I can't even remember what its called...), but yeah.

Don't drop it because some rock'n'roller on the internet told you to :)

Brew 08-03-2006 04:51 PM

You end up analysing music in Music Tech aswell, but not in as much detail.

Jev 08-03-2006 04:51 PM

Yeah I'll see how it is.
I can always drop it if I hate it.

And johnny Ramone is a terrible musician ;)

Nah, music should always be about compromise. Looking for techniques people have used shouldn't be confused with trying to justify every note, which is what they do.

i love the guitar solo in that song, the rest of the song is steller don't get me wrong (i even forgive him for having a song that fades out), but it's just one of the few bits of lead he does, and imo shows great he was at it, it just seems so soulful to me.

Jev 08-03-2006 06:00 PM

Songs that fade out are okay, for me it depends on the atmosphere of the whole song really...

The first few times I heard Forget Her it just passed by and I didn't notice anything special about it. Then I listened to the lyrics and they struck a chord with me. He describes things that I've felt in the past almost perfectly so it makes the song alot more personal.

I'm searching for some more cabaret music. And WIKI is pointing me towards Jill Tracy. She did some music for Scrubs, have you heard any of her stuff?
