There were no winners last night, the only loser was the human race.

Spaceman Spiff 06-08-2009 07:22 PM

Nice. My Brainiac DVDs have arrived. :D

So much live Brainiac footage.

Radiobass81 06-08-2009 10:41 PM

I concur, even if only because Irish failed at spelling "Colonel" (probably twice with his edit :P )

Coronal Mustard sounds like some kind of prog band with a vinyl cover of a sun dripping onto a hotdog or something.

I totally envisioned mustard on the top of someone's tooth, but it's only because this girl I'm hitting it off with is studying to be a dentist and that's some dentist term to define direction.

though he tries so furiously
disappears mysteriously
into a theatre "Big Dick's flicks"
i Wonders what hes watching

YAY ,I hear the feature film is called "Rick's Prick Pics"

no fmb the junk in your crotch ain't custerd
I already ****ed ms. peacock, so call me coronal mustard
Is this an actual challenge? I ask, are you fo real?
You don't wanna see me when I unleash my mad skill
B*tch I'll rub the floor with you; it aint no contest
My bank account will clearly show that F-M- Be the best

"Big Dicks Flicks" and "Rick's Prick Pics"
It's all just clever rhyming devoid of any chicks
An accurate representation of the life you are livin'
Sad and pathetic with no rapping ability given

I'd like to rip you a new one, but I have work to do, son
Besides, receiving anal penetration for you is just too fun
Come back to me when you're older, and when you've really got flow
But for now, you best recognize, the MX king is Joe.

Badass Joe.

fatbandit 06-09-2009 01:13 PM

i swapped the power supply i was using for my whammy today, and the amount of background noise it has reduced from my signal chain is insane D:

I'm well chuffed.

FunkMetalBass 06-09-2009 02:03 PM

What PS are you using now? I've been thinking about getting one of those SKB pedal boards with the power supply built in.

Efrim 06-09-2009 02:14 PM

Hey Joe, since you're so interested in mathematics, have you ever heard of the Banach-Tarski Paradox?

FunkMetalBass 06-09-2009 02:25 PM

I have heard of it, and it's actually something I'm quite interested in (given that it deals with geometry and topology, to a degree), but I don't understand enough set theory to really grasp it. It's on my list of things to look into as I progress in my math career.

Why do you ask?

And on a side note (reading about Euler's formula as a precursor to my topology studies), Leohnard Euler is insane. He was completely blind for the last 17 years of his life and still managed to publish a ridiculous amount of math-related works solely by oral dictation. He could do more in his head as a blind man than most people can on paper with a calculator.

Efrim 06-09-2009 02:28 PM

I just read about it is all. It seems fucked.

Radiobass81 06-09-2009 02:33 PM

Funk, what are you working on, now? Studying/teaching?

FunkMetalBass 06-09-2009 02:38 PM
I just read about it is all. It seems fucked.
It's just a 3-dimensional form of polygonal decomposition, (polyhedral decomposition?). Not a difficult concept in general. You basically break apart a shape into finitely many pieces and reassemble them into another shape of equal area (equal area is implied). A more simplified version is the circle-squaring problem.

Where do you just randomly read about this stuff?

FunkMetalBass 06-09-2009 02:47 PM
Funk, what are you working on, now? Studying/teaching?
I'm studying mathematics and some physics on the side. It's mind-blowing stuff, but it can get a bit dry at times - even enthusiasts like me can get bored of the topic.

I don't necessarily have a set career goal in mind beyond a PhD from MIT - I'll probably end up teaching. I do, however, want to prove the Prime Number Theorem. I believe that there is a final prime number, and there is a logical formula that can be used to define it. If that can be proven, we'll be one step closer as man-kind to disproving the concept of the completely random.

fatbandit 06-09-2009 02:48 PM

I have used a Diago power supply for quite some time for all my 9v DC pedals. 3A of power, so it's a trooper, and a very quiet and small one at that.

The whammy power supply needs 9v AC though. I bought it second hand with a Maplins general purpose power supply (I don't know what that is equivalent to in America? Radioshack maybe?). It was massive, took up the space of another pedal on my pedalboard and you could hear it humming if you put your ear within about a foot of it. I didn't realise that's what was making my signal so noisy as well though! Now I'm using one from effectspowersupplies.com - it isn't an official digitech one, but it works great :)

It's fucked because you're supposed to end up with two identical copies of the original. To us non-math folk that's like using magic to make another ball from nothing.

I just tour around the internet looking at interesting things.
BTW, if you want an interesting read, with math and very interesting stuff, check out: Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas Hofstadter.

That seems interesting. How did you get into that area? I mean, I didn't know about that theoretical side of math until a while ago. Did you just love numbers and discover it at the uni, or something similar?

And I understand what you're saying. Right now I'm in literature, but even at times I sometimes ask myself if it's what I really want. And I also don't have career goals (I see myself reasonably happy with any job I can get after getting a lit degree or whatever). My goal I guess is just to know as much as I can, see if I can kill my curiosity :p

English Lit?

Radiobass81 06-09-2009 03:04 PM
English Lit?
Hispanic. But if you've got some recommendations, go ahead. I don't want my English to get too rusty. Since I left the forums my grammar has been dying and I don't read too much in English. I've got a few in my to-read-which-I-have-bought, though (Wuthering Heights, The Dew Breaker).

Efrim 06-09-2009 03:12 PM

One of my majors is English Lit.

I actually have a suggestion in Hispanic:

Julio Cortázar-Hopscotch (Rayuela)
Heard of it?

English recommendations:
Timothy Findley-The Wars, or Headhunter.
Basically the best Canadian author. My favourite anyway.

Radiobass81 06-09-2009 03:13 PM

Rayuela is genious.

And thanks, I'll look up the author. And if you ever need anything, let me know. Especially in Caribbean literature or the Spanish Golden Age, since my uni is well known in those areas. Regarding the Golden Age, in Aljamiado literature is where we really excel, don't know if you've heard of it (I hadn't).

Efrim 06-09-2009 03:15 PM
Rayuela is a total mind**** :D.
One of the best books I've ever read. The English translation is good enough to keep the same mindfuckery.

Nope, I have no idea what Aljmadio is.

Well, if you have any recommendations, send them my way. I have a whole summer with nothing to do but work and read.

Ironically, it's the only Cortazar I've read, besides some essays here and there.

Do you like Benedetti? I was more angry than sad when he died. Check out La tregua. Not to well known since it's a novel and he's know for his poetry, but it's in my tops.
