where does it break?

/very important

Cain 11-15-2005 01:21 PM
ITT: people give me two-minute tips on how to re-string my guitar.

Everytime I re-string it, the top string ALWAYS breaks, so I can only play songs using the bottom five strings. This pretty much sucks, because there are barely any songs that do not use the top string.

Please and thank you :o

PS: guitar is an easy-peesy mac-and-cheesey Squier Strat. Helllllllll yeah.

I realize that it's supposed to be easy, but I obviously suck.
It could be that the nut is really bad and so your string is catching on some sort of flaw inside the space where it gets threaded through, causing it to snag and break. My strings usually break when changing them because of a temperature problem that causes the action and bridge of my guitar to go screwy when compared to the amount of tension the strings apply. It could be that since the Squire Strat is such a poorly-made guitar that your neck is messed up compared to the amount of tension it's supposed to handle, or that the string guage you're using is too heavy for the guitar.

Out of interest: what string guage are you using? And does it only break just as you're tuning it up to pitch immediately after restringing?

EDIT: And yeah, it's really good to know if it breaks by the bridge or by the nut, generally speaking. The place where it breaks is a good clue to what your guitar's problem is.

Also, I know you like a lot of nu-metal, so if you're tuning only up to C, the action/tension/intonation relationship is probably SEVERELY messed up which would cause your strings to do funny things like break. My strings break sometimes when tuning DOWN to a lower pitch, and this happens more often than breakage by tuning up. Other times I'll be tuning up TO standard from a lower open tuning (on my acoustic), and it'll break even though theoretically it should be fine as it's only tuning up to what it's designed for. This usually has to do with the guitar not being able to handle the constant action between the relief and application of stress that comes with having it in a tuning other than what it is set up for (and your Squire is probably optimized, if that's even the word, for standard).

At the nut/headstock.

EDIT: crap, Cain the ninja. Hang on.

I used 11s for awhile (dropped) without much of a problem. Now I have 12s to start playing again in standard, and yeah, they break pretty much when I'm tuning. The break is always at the nut/headstock, never down low towards the base.

I can take pictures of the guitar, but the problem here is that I need to find batteries for my camera.

I bought this guitar used to begin with, and it never really gave me any problems tone-wise or intonation-wise, I just figured I sucked at re-stringing. But after six or seven times, it's getting rather annoying, heh.

kurrpt 11-15-2005 01:26 PM

id say stretch it more before you go up to E....

or, you might have a bur on the machine head

Cain 11-15-2005 01:27 PM

I'm sorry about the ninja edits. I'll post my reply in a sec. :p

Jom 11-15-2005 01:33 PM

Right, so I "borrowed" some batteries from an unsuspecting roommate.

Give me a few moments.

EDIT: I just realized that this is pointless, as this isn't going to tell much.

Well, my bridge screws/springs are loose, but from what I understand this is normal. The only thing is that the bottom string's screw is so loose that part of the bridge covers the string hole, but that's a bit unreasonable. Otherwise, maybe I should just accept the fact that my re-stringing ability sucks a fat one.

file down the metal/plastic whereever the string sits, and on the tuner head wrap the string around twice before putting it throught the hole.
hope it helped :)

You don't suck at restringing. It seems that the basic problem is a difference between string guage and pitch considering what the guitar is set up for. For one thing, most cheap guitars work best with really light guages like 9s or 10s, not 11s or 12s (which are light guages for acoustic guitars, just to put it in perspective: the E on a 12 set is the same guage as a B for a light electric set), and your Squire probably came off the shelf optimized for nines or tens in standard: after all, the Squire is technically a beginner's guitar, and beginners learn and play best with really light guages like that. Even if you brought it in to have it set up for dropped tunings or heavier string guages, guitar shops hate setting intonation (especially on bad guitars like the Squire) because it's a nearly impossible thing to do. As a result, they'll avoid it wherever possible: you'll go in and say "Change my strings and set it up for intonation," and they'll just change the strings and charge you 30 dollars.

Plus, down-tuning causes the neck and the bridge to go funny, since there isn't as much stress as it's used to. This won't be a problem while you're in the tuning, especially with heavier guages (where it all sort of evens out, tension wise) but if you suddenly decide to take all your strings off and tune to standard with a guage heavier (as you say you're doing, switching from 11s to 12s) what you're doing is adding like 50 additional pounds of tension that the neck is no longer equipped to handle: since your string is breaking at the nut, I'm almost positive that your neck is out of alignment with the bridge and that tuning up to standard with an even heavier guage is just too much tension for your already thoroughly screwed-up guitar body to handle. Your best bet would be to take it in to a shop and ask what's the deal: I'm no guitar tech, but based on what I know about basic maintenence it sounds like that's the problem you're having. A simple truss-rod adjustment and maybe some action setting should fix it. It shouldn't cost you very much, either.

A professional guy would be able to tell you for sure. Just make sure he doesn't treat you like a little kid, because if he thinks you don't know anything about your problem, he won't fix it and he'll still charge you money for whatever he does, hoping you'll bring it back again when it still has problems, so that he can charge you MORE money.

/economics

EDIT: This is my best guess. I could be pissing in the wind, but I think that that's what's happening.

Hey guys, go listen to Chapter Four on www.myspace.com/avengedsevenfold

Its the live version, their drummer really slays.

Jom 11-15-2005 01:45 PM

Right, thanks. I'll be sure to reward you guys (Che, when you get kurrpt back [barring decision or whatever], I'll just add it to that) when I get back from class.

Part of it I think has to do with the guitar being so used. When I was cleaning it yesterday after I de-stringed it, there was this candlewax substance all over my fretboard. Combination of cloth and Q-tips = pretty nasty crap. And all these screws are loose, and the washer that holds my output jack together fell off, and it's starting to basically crap out for now.

I do have a set of 9s with me, so maybe I can just slap those on instead of the 12s.

Also, a guitar shop is out of the question, because I'm in the freakin' boonies right now. I might take it in when I go home for holiday break in December, but I can just have my tech friend have a look - he was the one that taught me how to re-string it in the first place.

I'll just try to re-string after class and see how it goes. If strings break again, I'm just giving up this guitar for a time and staying with bass.

Thanks again, everyone :-\

Oh, I enjoy hunting as well, I just love the hypocrisy of those people and the irony of it all.

I'd thought of having a hunting trip with my band and our friends in another local band. :)

So our school just got a tornado warning. Fricken' GREAT. Never been in a tornado before. Guess today's my lucky day.
