when duane did it tho, man, it was like an epiphany, like a sonic orgasm (like, no clean up!) he and dickey hit it up like a bowl. whoa when it goes back after the drum and bass and waltz part is makes me feel like an earthquake i mean yeah anyway i cant describe it

elizabeth read also, but once i had smoked 3 bowls, and big like a 1/2 gram each and when the bass break thing came in (you know like eweee, like the ascending scale) i was like WHAT IS IN MY HEAD that was sick

After looking at the original topic (is classic rock making a comback armong teens?) i must agree. i am only 15 and know more about classic rock than anybody I know including the ppl that actually lived to hear it when it first came out. one band that I have not seen mentioned on here yet is Styx. Lesser known but still as kick a** as ever.
My fav along with Rush, Van Halen, Deep Purple, Bad Company Moody Blues, Queen and Foreigner along with many others. Rock On!

You like good music man. :thumb:

As for Styx, meh...they were alright. I like "Blue Collar Man" and "Renegade".

pohl_56 09-09-2005 09:31 PM

Thanks. I must say that for being around for 33 years and counting they still sound exactly like they did back in the day. At least more so than most other bands. Anybody out there ever hear of Rainbow??? Good Stuff...

I'm a huge friggin' fan of Rainbow.

I own 16 albums of theirs, and Ritchie Blackmore is my number 1 guitar hero.

pohl_56 09-09-2005 09:39 PM

No way!!! finally-somebody else that likes them. thank you very much. ELO is another fav of mine and i can just keep going and going. Pretty much any band that came out before the year 1990 is good in my book. Current stuff is-well-needs help. i think right now we are in a downward spiral of music and need to get our grips on the classics and bring it back. rock n roll is of course the truest and most honest thing in this world we live in.

DeusExMachina 09-09-2005 09:57 PM

pohl 56: Glad you're a fan, always good to have a new one. Just a little heads up warning though, lots of noobs like to make "why does modern rock suck?" style threads, or something in that vein. For your own good, don't do that. You will be flamed to no end. Stay on the thread for a couple months, and you'll find that there are plenty of amazing modern rock bands that have been slipping under your radar. Welcome to the forums though! :thumb:

livinlavidatoka: Once again, glad to have a new poster/classic rock fan, but keep in mind that on these forums, the overblown dazed stoner/hippy style talk is not exactly appreciated. The thread in general much prefers clean, understandable posts.

No offense to either of you, by the way, just trying to give little pointers. Welcome to MX!
Anyone see The Foo Fighters play Born on the Bayou on the Hurrican relief concert? Paul Simon was just on.

Walrus, I think "That Slow One" is Woman Across the River.
I was gonna watch that on CBC, but I went to an intense ska show tonight. Meh, they'll rerun it until the tape falls apart.

Illmatic 09-10-2005 01:37 AM

So how does everyone feel about Traffic? I checked them out because I liked Stevie Winwood in Blind Faith, and I'm glad I did.

PinkFreud 09-10-2005 02:16 AM

traffic was great. they had a really good chemistry between the members.

holy ****ing ****. 1749 pages? thats ****ing crazy. Well... i was going to say I cant believe noone said anything about Guns N Roses, but i wasnt about to read 1749 pages to find out if what i was saying was true. But noone probably did say anything about them. Anyway, Guns N Roses own. And i know youre all thinking theyre not Classic Rock, but their album 'Appetite For Destruction' was classed as it in Rolling Stone magazine.

dr._feelgood 09-10-2005 07:06 AM

Meh Gn'R are OK, I don't think they're quite considered Classic Rock yet. Yeah, this is quite a thread, 1749 pages.

I think we determined that Guns N Roses aren't classic rock. More classic metal or maybe even glam. I personally can't stand them. They completely butchered Knockin' On Heaven's Door IMO. I think some regulars here like them though.

Which Traffic album should I get first? Should I avoid a greatest hits?

I liked their version alot actually...different strokes, eh?

Now, if you want to hear a butchering of Knockin' on heavens door...listen to Avril's version

*shudder*

dr._feelgood 09-10-2005 07:23 AM

She did a cover of Knockin' On Heaven's Door :amaze: ?! What is this world coming to?

I didn't know Avril disgraced that song
/shudders

I just don't like Axl's voice and I don't think his voice really fits the song. I can't stand Eric Clapton's version of it either, and I love him. I guess I'm particular about that song. Just the way Dylan sings it fits the song perfectly.

Speaking of Dylan, here's the version of Tangled Up In Blue from Live '75-
hxxp://s45.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2IMNTOL7AXH8O0T5D4E4PT3B1B

I forgot to post it last night. That version's also on the DVD that comes with the cd. I suggest everyone to buy Live '75 if they like Dylan. That and BOTT are my favorite Dylan albums. The packet is also really informative and great.

Edit- Avril's cover of Knockin' On Heaven's Door can't be worse than Hilary Duff's cover of My Generation :upset:

DeusExMachina 09-10-2005 07:39 AM

I like the Guns and Roses cover of Knockin' on Heaven's Door. But, I think the best version of that song is Warren Zevon's (who doesn't get talked about enough in here).

GnR aren't classic anything, they're hard rock, nothing more, nothing less.

I only have Traffic's s/t and it's good, but Mr. Fantasy is supposed to be good.

Dr. John was on the hurricane concert too, but I only saw the end of his song.

Hey, a Moody Blues fan! They didn't really age well, I guess, but I think they're great. Not much of a Styx fan, though.

I actually like GnR quite a bit. Civil War is actually one of my favorite songs ever, although I will admit they put out a fair bit of crap.
traffic was great. they had a really good chemistry between the members.
Yea, whenever their line-up stayed the same for a month they had great chemistry.

I consider myself one of the biggest Traffic fans here, but I can't say for sure.

Robo - It depends what you're looking for. Mr. Fantasy is a cool psychedelic album, Last Exit is a bit more straightforward in terms of rock, and John Barlelycorn must Die and Low Spark of High-heeled Boys are a little more advanced musically (some jazz/prog elements in there).

Thanks, that helps. If they covered a bunch of different styles, I'll probably get one their actual studio albums instead of a compilation. Probably Mr. Fantasy or Last Exit, whichever I can find. I think I've seen Mr. Fantasy in stores, not sure though. I may have also seen John Barleycorn Must Die. I definitely haven't seen either of the others though. I'll just get what I see, and then order the others from Amazon if I really get into Traffic.

BludgeonySteve 09-10-2005 09:31 AM

Whatever they play on that one crappy classic rock radio format is classic rock. So GnR are classic rock. I love them :)

I loved Knockin on Heaven's Door, but I really got out of them fast. I had there greatest hits, and I felt like I could just do much better, and that much of there music was similiar and repetitive. It just bored me.

You are such a corporate whore.

JonG 09-10-2005 09:40 AM

I don't know why they labeled Apetite as Classic Rock. Didn't it come out in 1989?!

Rolling Stone thinks lots of things are classic rock, that really aren't.

I also can't stand Axl Roses ego, and voice.

robo2448 09-10-2005 09:42 AM
GnR were never metal. They could be described as a classic rock band, but that term in itself isn't very descriptive. They're influenced by much the same music as the people in this thread: The Stones, The Beatles, Aerosmith, The Yardbirds, Bowie, T-Rex etc. plus they had classic punk influences. Yeah, they're my favourite band.

I'm not a huge fan of the KOHD cover, though there is some great live recordings which own the studio version, but it's at least unique and inventive. They made it their own.

p.s. Thanks robo for the Dylan mp3 :)
I haven't really listened to enough GnR's to classify them, but I thought that some n00b obsessed with GnR's said they were the best band ever and that everyone else sucked and then we had to flame him and someone said they weren't even classic rock. I guess they're pretty much straight-up hard rock then. I can't really stand Axel's voice in the 5 or so songs I've heard by them though, and so I've never bought any of there stuff. I've just heard what's on the radio all the time and haven't liked that.

np- Crossroads

Yes, I believe they did. They weren't around during the "classic rock era" nor do they have the "classic sound" (I don't think anyway) that some modern bands have (ie The Black Crowes)

Not classic rock.
Appetite For Destruction was released in 1987.
Meh, 2 years what's the difference.

Woodstock 09-10-2005 09:50 AM

I just realized today how weak I would be if I didn't have any of my music. I probably couldn't live for very long, possibly resort to massive rooftop shooting sprees... :(

What would any of you do if you lost all of your music?

jpj 09-10-2005 09:52 AM

I lost a lot of my music in an accidental deletion of all the music on my computer. I'm still missing a lot of album that I had on mp3.

Badmoon 09-10-2005 09:53 AM

I'd get by.

Good answer.

Jam2Me 09-10-2005 09:57 AM

If I lost ALL my music I would buy back all my favorite albums. I sometimes wish I had a nice little collection of music I truly loved rather than a massive collection of some mediocre CDs I bought for the hell of it.

If I lost all my music, I would waste a lot of money buying my favorite CD's back, and play my instruments about 5 times as much as I do now.

NP: Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin.

Sticks and stones... :(

I'm going to go listen to some Kansas and Journey, but only the radio-approved songs. Then i'm going to buy a Pink Floyd greatest hits album

angusmaster 09-10-2005 11:24 AM

If i lost all my music,id probably go through phase where i would be mad at everyone for a while.

As for gnr,I bought the greatest hits and liked it for a while, then i got into other stuff.

Edit:Is it me,but every time i post something, the thread is dead for a while.
