Clearly both sides in this case are biased, so, I neutral observer (someone who can't get wrap my mind around the Grateful Dead), will comment:
clearly extending a song too long makes it suck. I haven't heard the Dead live, but I've heard Phish live, and when you take a song and stretch it out too long, the song loses its initial punch.
Your view is just as biased, just against long jams in general instead of just against the Grateful Dead. Some people like overly extended songs. |
Haha ya. They are all asked their name age and occupation in the airport...Jim doesn't feel necessary to give his last name (apparently just Jim will do), and when asked his occupation...he thinks for a few seconds and then kinda just looks at the camera and chuckles to himself.
Yeah I love it. And Ray, being so serious coming of the plane. |
Yeah I love it.
And Ray, being so serious coming of the plane.
I thought it was cool seeing the clip of Ray having to play and sing when Jim was passed out/couldn't be found. He could make himself sound very similiar to Jim if he wanted to. |

Yeah he had Light My Fire down pretty good. My favourite was probably When the Music's Over but thats biased because it is one of my favourite songs. |

Huh? How am I biased here? |
clearly extending a song too long makes it suck.
Biased against long jams. It may not be your thing, but it doesn't always suck. I've heard some great things 20 minutes into some jams. |
The key word there is "too"
There's "long" and there's "too long". Dig? |
The key word there is "too"
The key word there is "too"
There's "long" and there's "too long". Dig?
There's such a thing as too long when it comes to good music? We must listen to different music. Half hour drum solo? I say...BRING IT ON!! |
Define "too" long.
There's nothing wrong with taking a song and extending it, but sometimes it can reach a point (theoretically speaking--the only example that comes to mind is in live versions of "Moby Dick") where it just feels contrived and is strung along well past the point of enjoyment. |
I think drum solos, especially longer ones, are boring to most people who don't play drums. But I agree, Bonham can drag it on, and on.
However, all Grateful Dead jams do not suck, as Fast Finger's comment implied. Length alone does not ruin a song, in my opinion. Especially when the band is talented and capable enough to carry out a jam and keep it interesting. |
The Grateful Dead don't seem particularly good or bad to me. The problem with most of their longer jams is that they're too easy for me to tune out.
|
I really don't mind when the Dead go out of tune, since it happens alot. Sometimes even the out of tune jams are catchy. Sure they arn't great, but I don't mind it. Its like Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix's sloppy playing, its just somthing I ignore.

Drums solos are only entertaining to drummers. The other 99% of music fans get bored to death.
|
I'm not sure if that was the "tune" he was talking about but whatever.
Grateful Dead jams are the 2 longest songs on my iTunes. Good Lovin and Eyes of the World. |

I like short drum solo's or when you are acctually watching it. I like Grateful Dead drum solos cause there is two drums going at once. |
Grateful dead jams last as long as it takes for the acid trip to calm down.

I just listened to Mountain Jam on Eat A Peach, awesome drum solo. My respect for the Allman bros soars everytime I hear that song. EDIT: And it's a good example of a long song that doesn't drag on. It's either 33 or 34 minutes long, but doesn't get boring in the least. It constantly changes musical directions and listening to it is a real mindblowing experience. |

There are really cool drum solo's I don't just mean technically I mean musically, to be quite honest I think they're under rated. |

I was listening the Live/Dead album today. It's really cool, you just kind of get lost and zone out. |
The longest song on my iTunes is Thick as a Brick.
|
...says the drummer.
...who knows something about drum solos other than what he's heard from travis barker ;p. Seriously, they're out their, ever listened to a good jazz drum solo? |
I wish my video of Thick As a Brick would upload. Maybe I'll try again tonight.

My music teacher was one of the best Jazz drummers in Toronto while going to college,he's still only about 25) and watching his 10 min solos does not bore my one bit. |

Yeah, Travis Barker solos are the suck. Anyways, you're bias so you don't get an opinion. |

A lot of drum solos are interesting to listen to. Like Ginger Baker's; I like his polyrhythms.
