Nice  I'm getting back into the Stones right now. I loved them about two years ago, but kinda got out of them. What's everyone's favorite Stones song(s)? For me: Gimme Shelter Street Fighting Man Brown Sugar Get Off Of My Cloud Wild Horses Tumbling Dice Beast Of Burden Jumpin' Jack Flash Off the top of my head. |
Everything from Beggar's Banquet-Exile On Main Street is great. Tr00f. Rough Justice was alright, but it sucks because I had to have the volume really low so I couldn't really hear Wood's playing. He was at a lower volume than Richards for some reason. Richards looks so funny.
I listened to Some Girls again this afternoon. I think I might review it if it hasn't been done. One of my favorite albums ever. If I had to pick just one song though, it would probably be You Can't Always Get What You Want. Fuck. Greenday's on now. |
Gimme Shelter
Love in Vain Sympathy For the Devil Salt of the Earth No Expectations Tumbling Dice Torn and Frayed Rocks Off Sister Morphine Let It Bleed Wild Horses Beast of Burden Street Fighting Man You Can't Always Get What You Want Honky Tonk Women Let It Loose |
Keith Richards had a beautiful voice back in the Exile on Mainstreet era, Happy is one of my favorite songs of all time.

I remember RNR begging you to change it because he didn't want to see Morrison's nipples every time you posted.
I've got that same picture on the wall right above my bed (except it's huge). Morrisons nipples are approximately 2 feet above my head every night while I'm sleeping. I don't really mind. I've never heard a song I didn't like by The Doors, some of the songs from The Soft Parade took a few listens to grow on me. Although some of their live songs don't always sound too great. I'm fairly sure I named my favourite Stones songs yesterday...maybe the day before. |
The Doors constantly straddle the line between "great" and "unlistenable" for me. They have their moments---there are definitely high points in their career---and they have definitely put out a lot of crappy songs.
I agree; Strange Days, S/T, and morrison Hotel are all golden albums Waiting for the Sun is pretty good, But then I'm not thrilled about L.A. Woman. I haven't really heard Soft Parade, so I can't judge that one. |

Most people consider it one of the Doors best too. I'm surprised you don't like it, give it another chance. I haven't heard good things about the Soft Parade, supposed to be poppy, but poppy's not always a bad thing. My guess is that it's not really that bad, just nowhere near their other stuff. Santana stole the pregrame show. I wish I was seeing him live. I'll check when he's in NY and see if tickets are available. Wish he played Black Magic Woman though. Who's performing at half-time? np- Comfortably Numb (off DSOT)- best version I've heard  |
I think I not a fan of L.A. Woman is because it is more upbeat, and I tend to like the darker Doors stuff. Strange Days is my favorite album, and it's they're darkest.
I've only heard LAW twice, though. Maybe it'll grow on me. |

Actually I go back and forth between LA Woman and Strange Days a lot as my favorite. LA Woman's lyrics are still good, but the early, dark, lyrics are better. |
"Horse Latitudes" actually scares me. That's how good it is.
|
Is "Riders on the Storm" and "L'america" not dark enough?
|
Are you going to robert plant?

My absolute favorite Stones song is Love In Vain. It's such a great cover. I really like Jagger's vocals on it too, very fun to sing along with.
Others: Gimme Shelter Brown Sugar Paint It Black Sympathy For The Devil Country Honk Let It Bleed Wild Horses I Got The Blues |

Honkey Tonk Woman and Wild Horses are my favorites. My dad, on occasion, plays with a Stones cover band.
|
My brother saw the Stones because his friend had an extra ticket. I listen to them more than he does
Anyways, Bela Fleck's "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo" is very cool. I like the combination of instruments and the songs all have a really good groove, if you will. |
I'd say Angie is my favourite Stone's song, it's such a great ballad. As Tears Go Bye isn't very well known by them, but I urge everyone to download it or something because it's another beautiful ballad.

a couple of my fav stones songs are cocaine eyes and blinded by the light, just to name a couple
a couple of my fav stones songs are cocaine eyes and blinded by the light, just to name a couple
I'm quite positive neither of those songs were written by the Rolling Stones. I could be wrong, but Cocaine Eyes was written by Neil Young, and Blinded by the Light was written by Bruce Springsteen (although I've only heard the Manfred Mann version) |
Ya that's what I thought too, but I wasn't sure so I didn't say anything.
I'm not a fan of the Stones.. don't know why, just never have been.
But I did listen to the Doors today for the first time in a few months, and I forgot how much I love Morrison's voice. :)
you think Gregg Allman sounds like Jim Morrison, so stfu :p |
Gregg Allman DOES at certain points! I don't know how you can't hear it, I totally hear it.
Gregg Allman >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Jim Morrison |
Yeah, my dad has the Forty Licks boxset. I've listened to it before, but it was awhile ago.. Maybe if I listened to it now I'd like it more.
Ya you should definitely give them another chance. There's even a lot of songs of theirs outside 40 licks that are worth a listen. |
Gregg Allman >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Jim Morrison
You're insane. |
morrison wasnt that good though. he had a deep voice, almost no range, and power. lots of power. no versatility.
not that i dont like him a lot. hes just not that good of a singer. |
I don't think you can define a "good" singer.
I love Morrison because his voice matched the music perfectly. |
you can define a good singer by his range, versatility, power, and the quality of their voice.
chris cornell and jeff buckley had huge ranges. cornell had great power. buckley could sing everything. they were good singers. morrison had a lackluster range, great power, but his voice was one dimensional. |

I can't think of a single reason why Morrison was a better singer than Allman. |
You're insane.
I was trying to find an unoffensive way to reply. Jim Morrison wasn't a great singer and he knew it. It was all about the lyrics for him, and he often said that. I think he's got a wonderful voice, not in the conventional sense....sort of like how Robert Plant or Jimi Hendrix have great voices. As opposed to Freddy Mercury who actually has an amazing singing voice. I'm sure everyone agrees to that. Maybe even Illmatic does. |
In his prime Gregg Allman had one of the best voices around, him and Richard Manuel.

It hasn't aged too badly, either My music theory class is better than I thought it would be. We almost had a Spanish Jam with an Acoustic Bass, Acoustic Guitar, Baritone Ukulele and my Castanets. Maybe next time. Maybe if we had some of our school guitar heros. We have one really good one that I wouldn't be surprised to be on the jam scene in a few years, Really ****ing good. |
I'm still not fond of Jim Morrison. He has moments where he is incredible ("Break On Through"), but a lot of the time he's barely doing anything more than mumbling, and it completely ruins The Doors' music for me.

He had amazing range (they say there's notes on Zeppelin songs only dogs can) and a really powerfull sound. |

I love both of their voices. My favorite singers are Daultry, all of the Beatles (even Ringo ), Bob Dylan , Mick Jagger (more his singing style than singing skills), David Gilmour, John Fogerty and Richard Manuel, Rich Danko, and Levon Helm from the Band. Edit- And I absolutely can't stand Robert Plant's voice. His voice makes Zeppelin unlistenable for me. He may have vocal talents, but it just sounds terrible to me. Whereas everyone says Bob Dylan has no vocal talent and I absolutely love his voice. |
my favorite vocalists are Jim Morrison, Daltrey, Fogerty, Pigpen, Marvin Gaye, and Freddy Mercury.

thats a lie. buckley can hit notes that women find hard to hit. |
I love David Bowies' voice, even when listening to a song the emotion/attitude just pours out.
I dunno, David Bowie Classic Rock? I think so. Bah, no not glam! I consider him Classic Rock. |
