You kids are so silly.

I am procrastinating from re-reading pages upon pages of political science text for my exam tomorrow. What a freaking boring area of the world, man. I just want to get to the good stuff.

I should probably highlight and take notes as I go along. It gives me an excuse to be on the computer, but then again, I will still be able to lurk around.

Ah, procrastination is good. It's what got me through my three-essays-in-a-week time, and my dissertation. And of course, MX is the No.1 procrastination tool.

Although I have just finished writing a new song for my band. It's sounding pretty sweet - I never thought I'd be able to write something so catchy.

Indeed. This place has put me off of homework for a couple of hours plenty of times.

Well, it's more a case of being able to play your instrument, and knowing how songs of the style you're playing are put together. If you have another band member who does lyrics (which I do), that's the hardest part done for you. Then all you have to do is think of a melody for the lyrics, fit some chords around it, add a couple of riffs, write a drum part if you're doing it on your computer (like I am), and you're done. Easy! If I get this song all recorded tomorrow I'll put it up on here for y'all to laugh at.

Unfortunately, that's as far as I am too.

P.S. tabbing instruments you don't play only sounds good to you because you don't play them.

If something sounds good then it sounds good.

If I make a nifty sounding riff on a Timpani, then it's a nifty sounding riff.

You miss my point. Power chords sound good to non-musicians because they don't play guitar (or anything). Same thing with any other instrument.

billiejoe84 09-25-2005 07:40 PM

My computer is really FUCKING winding me up at the moment. I have an idea for a really good solo in my head, which I think would go well with the chord progression for the song I wrote today. I really want to record it to a backing track to see if it fits OK, but bloody ACID keeps crashing when I'm mid-recording. I am close to violence against the computer here.

It sounds the same to everyone, regardless.

Just because you can play guitar doesn't somehow change the way you hear a song. It simply changes how you appreciate certain things about it.

Writing solos is lame.

I improvise 50% of the two songs my band has written.

(By that I mean that I improvise half of each song, not that I improvise one and not the other)

Well, much as I'd like to be able to improvise, that's one of my weakest areas as a guitarist. I'm much better at thinking out how I want each part to sound and how it'll fit the chords underneath. Whenever I try to improvise I end up either screwing up or thinking of what would have sounded good when it's too late to play it.

Oh yeah, James, I just downloaded your band's cover of "minority". Not too bad. :)

It's kind of funny with the accent. Not that bad playing wise.

The first half of the solo I've been trying to write, if anyone's interested. I want the second half (basically the same chord progression again) to be a bit more widdley, but I really can't be bothered at the moment because my computer keeps playing silly buggers, and it'll take me long enough to record a take I'm happy with even without my computer being stupid.

Actually, there's no way of knowing what one thing sounds like to someone else. Everyone processes things differently from actually getting the sound to how they analyze it, so you're quite wrong. :)

It can, if you change the way you analyze the sounds you hear it can sound very different, it's a long process to change though. If you play guitar from age 5 though, you hear music different from other people when you're 15.
