Well he's not stoner/doom!

Jondur 08-30-2007 02:35 AM
.I have known John Perez of Solitude Aeturnus for years, and was one of the few that auditioned for the vocalist position for Last Chapter,
so I know a little about the genre LOL.
Are you in a band now? If you've got the vocal talents to audition for Last Chapter then you should be.
anybody heard the new Paradise Lost, saw them way back when, absolutely excellent band ,total energy personified!
I've seen PL loads of times but was never that impressed. Nick Holmes' rockstar stylings put me off a bit. Sunglasses onstage at Donington in the pouring rain for a start.

Ah yeah, well, I'm kind of a wizened warrior now.Too many years of vocal inactivity and maybe partly due to this crummy Texas air and a throat problem, just can't sing like I used to.Best I can manage now is a little Morrison or Ozzy.I'll be honest,I was capable so they gave me a chance, and after I heard them play I told them no matter how things went I would be a lifelong fan.It is kind of a long story but the short version is that they were willing to try to work with me but the Dallas /Fort Worth traffic was horrendous even back then, so timewise it just wasn't possible.I was separated from my first wife so I didn't have a car, so, I was bumming a ride from Darrin Davis.Though it didn't work out it was the greatest personal doom exp. of my life.It was beyond awesome to have the band behind me in practice and literally feel the walls shake.I got to witness the beginning of a passage that later became "Thorn Of Creation" and sang the original lyrics of "Things to Come",I don't think Robert even did that.I settled for being their unofficial local scribe since I write for Harder Beat magazine and if you ever read cd credits I am the one that was"blessed" by the band on Paths To Always.I normally use the pen and screen name Sabbath Steve but wanted to try something different so I used this one.

Bad luck man. But at least you've got yourself some great memories and a good story to tell!

You a Las Cruces fan?

sabbath in solitude 09-01-2007 12:07 PM

Hah, yeah, doom war stories I call them LOL !.Mark and the boys are a sad story, man ,what could have been!I was very fortunate to have been given a copy of a three song cd by Mark at the Stoner Hands Of Doom festival we had in Dallas back in 01.It was some great stuff in a Trouble/newer Cathedral kind of vein.Absolute shame they didn't come out with another cd.Don't know if you are aware of it or not, but they have a track called Sadness on a comp called I am Vengeance which was a soundtrack of sorts for an underground psychedelic/horror flick of the same name and they cover The Prisoner on a Maiden tribute titled Slave To The Power.

I'm at a loss as to which Queens of the Stone Age album to get first. Can someone help me out?

LifeInABox 09-01-2007 01:16 PM

Well, Agalloch isn't at all Doom or stoner metal, but can someone give me what I might like along the lines of Agalloch/Neurosis/Gordian Knot/Pelican?

Oriah 09-04-2007 07:14 PM

Anyone point me in the direction to get more Jesu, all I have is Silver.

NemesisDivina 09-04-2007 08:22 PM

s/t. awesome album. i fell in love with the songs 'we all faulter' and 'friends are evil'

Nostalgia 09-04-2007 09:14 PM

I lost interest in Jesu when I saw how horrible they are live. Honestly, it was hard to listen.

NemesisDivina 09-04-2007 09:24 PM

they don't seem like they're really cut out to be a live band. i think i'll stick with the studio works.

Txus 09-04-2007 09:27 PM

How can they be horrible live? I can't believe that.

halfdeadhippo 09-04-2007 09:29 PM

I rarely go to shows, and Jesu still sounds good through my headphones, so I'm a fan.

Kage 09-05-2007 12:52 AM

They are great live.

Nostalgia 09-05-2007 12:57 AM

Yeah if you're looking to fall asleep.

Kage 09-05-2007 12:57 AM

And what if I am?

Heartache EP is a trip and a half, 2 songs, bout half hour long in full

good stuff considering when i first heard them i thought they were too upbeat sounding :p i think they're ok now

Iron Bars 09-05-2007 02:56 AM

Heartache Ep is great but the new album Conquerer is also very good but different from the 'early' stuff, more post-rockish.

metal-militia 09-07-2007 05:38 AM

Got my Candlemass tickets yesterday :chug: I can't wait to see them!

the2stranger 09-07-2007 09:30 AM

Damn, Candlemass are playing a show near me tonight?!?!?!?!
:(
I didn't know that..

Oh well.

Another show I'm looking forward to is Esoteric, Forgotten Tomb + Support.
It'll be good.

pate 09-07-2007 09:35 AM

That would be a good show Petey.

the2stranger 09-07-2007 09:40 AM

Indeed, I just found out that the support band is the Dutch masters of dirty, raw drone: Bunkur.

Not bad. :)
I wonder if Esoteric will play any new material, although there's no album update to be found.
Oh well, the old stuff suits me fine too.

Now wait. What I'm confused about is are there 2 bands named Esoteric? Or is there one named just Esoteric and one named The Esoteric? I could never figure it out...

Either way, not really a fan of either.

NemesisDivina 09-07-2007 05:02 PM

so Rob Lowe is singing vocals on this tour, correct?

Candlemass were great, Rob is an exelent vocalist, even though he doesn't have the range of Messiah he did the old songs in his own style and it really fit eccelent.

When we were walking back to the car we ran into Leif so we had a little chat with him. All in all it was a great evening.
