The way I interpreted it, and the way a friend told me it was going to be, was that the plane stayed stationary (somehow) and the propeller pushed air back towards the wings, and whether the wind from that could make the plane take off.

I think that would be a good one to test. Figure out a way to keep the plane in place on a treadmill without hindering it's takeoff ability, and see if it would take off then. I would suggest it on mythbusters messageboard, but don't feel like getting yelled at by a bunch of people who are way too proud they "got it right"[/QUOTE]
the wings need the air in front of it to be moving back at a certain velocity (depending on shape, size, etc. etc.). the propeller is designed not like a boat, where the propeller pushes, but like a helicopter in that it pulls. That pulling pulls the airplane forward, and the air can get to the wings at the velocity where lift happens.
if you want to put a plane at takeoff velocity but not moving, you'd need a headwind moving at the same speed (~100mph).

The misconception that the plane stays stationary is central to the problem. It's what makes it so confusing! In reality, it doesn't matter how fast the conveyor belt is moving, because it isn't the wheels that provide the momentum. The plane will always move forward, but with the wheels spinning at twice their usual speed (assuming the conveyor belt matches the speed of the plane). Other than that, the plane takes off as normal.

they should just have conveyor belts that move same direction as plane that way they wouldnt need wheels.

Holy crap, i was hanging out with a girl friend's girl friends and i expected to be home at 1 AM at the latest but i ended up staying until 5 AM because there were four of us crammed onto a couch and you can't pass that up with some decent looking women.
