Yeah, that's pretty stupid. To love Opeth because of how different they sound and then complain because no one else sounds like them.
People are entitled to their opinions and I'm all for less fanboys in ANY official thread. Threads are for discussion, and in this one I see many many more posts dealing with what the favorite Opeth song of the moment is for all the regular users rather than any real criticism or discussion about an aspect of the band. Whenever I criticize Morningrise, for instance, it tends to be mostly dismissed or ignored, and nothing ever gets talked about except what an awesome song "The Drapery Falls" is. I haven't seen a stimulating discussion in here in a long time, I'm sorry to say. No hard feelings, everyone, but don't tell a person to get out of the Opeth thread because they don't like Opeth. It does nothing except hinder real debate and discussion.
**** you Cain. You and you're stupid ****ing whining. Making me go back several pages... shame on you. :p Discussion ++
Really? I thought Morningrise had pretty bad solos. I think Still Life had some of the best. On the other hand, I'm a rare Opeth fan that, while enjoying Morningrise, nevertheless takes a rather dim view of its actual compositional cohesiveness.
I don't see how you think the solos are bad. I believe that the first two tracks do not have any solos, so really, they aren't bad if nonexistant. Now the next three all do. I know I like Nectar's, but my CD is not with me so I can't really comment on it :-\. Black Rose Immortal however... holy ****. 16:30 has one of my favorite solos. The semi calm distorted chords lead into a short dual melody dealy and then to an explosive solo. The length of the solo seems a bit short (30 seconds) which I guess could be the downfall for you... maybe. Then there is TBYF. It certainly is nothing to get excited for, but still very fitting and nice. It fits the mood of the song perfectly. The complexity of the solo probably knocks it down a couple notches. There is a pretty low number of solos on this album, but the content given I find very good. So basically what I'm telling you is that you are completely wrong, and that's a fact. Now onto your point about it's compositional cohesiveness. Ok, I'll admit it... there are several parts that have... rough transitions. I think the only track without them is probably TBYF. If I get my CD out I can probably elaborate later. /failed 'How to not Sound like an Idiot While in a Discussion' class |

What are you talking about? This thread is my home boy dog.

Ur postcount= teh low. Maybe you lurk. Anyways, I know you were just kidding. :) /omguwur, rite? |
I agree with Cain, there HASN'T been any great discussion in here for a long time, hence my failure to post in here often anymore. But i think it's for different reasons, There has been nothing to dicuss with the band, they've been quiet for a very long time, nothing controversial with the band outside of the musical world either, no mikael stabbing peter and going to jail discussions or anything like that. Opeth has just been very quiet, and has given us nothing to talk about.
Also, about morningrise.......................methinks it gets hyped up too much  . Don't get me wrong, awesome cd, but there isn't a great deal that's overly special about it, with blackrose immortal, i like it from the start of the acoustic section around 9 minutes in until the end. The first 9 minutes really annoy me for some reason. Favourite guitar work is still off 'The Twilight Is My Robe' :thumb: flame me to f*ck for my opinions  i really don't mind EDIT: or my poor grammatical skills, i apologize, i'm still recovering from hospital |
Probably already started but what was your first Opeth song on any instrument. Mine was Moonlapse Vertigo on guitar. I loved the guitar riffing in that song so I learnt the song. I wasn't a death head before and I'm still not but Opeth's music is really different to other death metal and is very good. I've also learnt The Drapery Falls and The Moor. What are other some other good songs to learn? The Twilight is My Robe sounds pretty good, maybe that'll be my next song.

I still think the most monumental album from opeth was still life
The whole album was a story...and good instrument work as well |

Black Rose Immortal loses my attention at times into the song, but nonetheless there are parts I love in it aswell. |
Morningrise is definetly overrated. I believe Orchid is better than MR.
|
morningrise is a great cd IMO, but they have a lot better ones. the fist songs arent too great but black rose immortal and to bid you farewell are awesome.

--------------------------------- Lamb of God http://www.geocities.com/thejesuschainsawmassacre/LAMBOF3.mid Opeth http://www.geocities.com/thejesuschainsawmassacre/OPETH1.mid Heres the midi files so you can hear all instruments in both songs and hear how they play their parts. I think dicking around on stage and playing Lamb of God songs would be alot easier. |
Hehe Bleak is 3 times as long as that LoG track.
|
If you guys had a chance to play on stage for 5 minutes, which Opeth song would you take?
I might later this year and the only reason I'd want to do it is to play Opeth :P. Death vocals won't be a problem because I could probably just find a way to sing them clean or leave them out... or I guess try to death them up. Easier solos shouldn't be a problem. A Fair Judgement would probably be a good choice, but the solo is... awesome :upset:. TBYF is a good possibilty, but I'd need to leave parts out or shorten them. D*mnation songs would fit the time bill for the most part, but I would want some metal too. |

Soft ones, but you could take a 10 minute long song and leave parts out and change it around to make it fit in 5 minutes.
Like TBYF has a lot of repeating sections which you could play once or leave out. |
Yeah, but someone came in here and said "Opeth is the only talented band on that tour." Thats so unbelievably ignorant that I had to start an argument.
That would depend upon your definition of "talented." Personally, I'm really into singers/vocalists. About 90% of the vocalists on the bill, with the exception of Devin Townsend (SYL), are godawful, and that includes your beloved Randy Blythe. If you like the way he sounds, then that's great...but he cannot sing. The whole reason why I personally cannot stand metalcore is the fact that so many vocalists seem to put not an ounce of their energy into actually developing their voices....this is demonstrated most clearly when they attempt to "sing." To do a good death metal growl or black metal scream, on the other hand, takes almost as much control and training as it does to sing properly. Obviously, with harsh vocals, you either like it or you don't, but personally I cannot stand the style. Songwriting is pretty much subjective, so it's hard to judge...but typical intro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/"breakdown"/chorus/outro 'core songs bore the crap out of me. From a musical perspective, Opeth is by far the most advanced band on the bill. If you can't recognize that, then you are the ignorant one. Odd time signatures, unique chords, complex harmonies...they simply have a great deal more going on than any other band on there. I'm happy for X guitarist from X band who can play really fast, but that has absolutely nothing to do with "talent." |

You know exactly what's going on, and for a moment i was afraid you might rag on devin, (is a devin townsend fanboy:p) but you didn't, so huzzah to you sir:). I actually think nearly everyone has the ability to shred at lightning speeds if they want, I myself just trained myself to shred whilst i was learning, but i find opeth songs difficult to play at times, yet i can play Yngwie stuff. Opeth is all about the diversity each instrument has when playing, and the wall of sound the group as a collective creates. It owns anything metalcore can dish out. |
Devin Townsend is great man, what are you talkiung about
Devin Townsend is great man, what are you talkiung about
seriously, gtfo, you mustn't have even read my post at all |
Devin Townsend is amazing. He just needs to shave his head.

Definatly :D. Have you heard The 'Infinity' album? |
Is devin that bald dude from strapping young lad?
anywayz, as for whatduffhuck, i bet the guy doesn't even know who he is talking to. |
Hehe...for the record: I'm saying that SYL is one of the other decent bands on the tour. I like them and can't wait to catch them live, as I missed them when they went on tour for Alien because of ****ing senior sem. Hmmph....stupid...graduation. Overrated.

SYL Is awesome, and even though Alien is a great album, i still think City holds their best work. |

They were so good live, they should have been like 4th to last, instead of at like 3 o'clock in the afternoon  |
Hopefully I will catch Opeth live when they tour again soon, Mikael said that there will be more touring after the album and will probably be just Opeth, I can't wait!

I love Opeth. But about this arguement over their live performances, I have this to say:
I have never seen Opeth live, but I do own Lamentations. If I saw them live and they played like they did on the dvd, I would want my money back. Sorry, but everything was just too perfect. Every song sounded just like the recorded version. I would prefer them to play their songs different live. That's just me though. Are they good live? Yes. But I personally don't like bands that are "good" live. Just my opinion. |

I love how Mikael forgot the original The Drapery Falls solo and just created a new one for live performances. |
I mentioned this a long time ago in this thread, but i actually thought mikael's clean vocal performance on lamentations was sloppy, and in general, i didn't dig the dvd much, it nearly sent me to sleep, even though they have a great live sound, the tone on the guitars is awesome :D
