You know, I don't even know how I do pinch harmonics, since I don't play with a pick. I think I pinch the string in something like a literal sense: the right side of my index finger strikes the string, and my thumb is placed directly above it on the left side of the index finger, with the base of the thumb perpendicular to it. The thumb follows the index finger fairly immediately, and voila.

I just learned how to do those badass squeals on the low strings the other day. They're a lot of fun.

Taste_My_Scythe 09-06-2005 07:39 PM

Yeah, I heard some squeals on that Juice recording...which I still listen to by the way. I actually like your version better than Vai's. :)

OK! So, Rhapsody. Just listened to a teensy bit of the second song on the album; awesome. Can't wait to actually hear the whole thing.
Thaaaaank you, Neurotoxin! :D

Cain 09-06-2005 07:42 PM

Rhapsody is a band that I should, in a rational world, be ashamed to enjoy as much as I do. But I love them.

Really, Power Metal could own the charts if these bands would start getting singers that channel Mikael Akerfeldt instead of Ronnie James Dio. The bane of all metal music are the terrible vocalists in its best bands. Read: Dream Theater.

Taste_My_Scythe 09-06-2005 07:42 PM

Why should you be ashamed to like them?

Steerpike 09-06-2005 07:42 PM
You mean like funny noises, or show-offy techniques? I take my whammy bar out of the bridge sometimes and make "hot babe" whistling noises and laser shots with it, but that's the extent of it. Also, feeding back with a flanger and a wah on at the same time is awesome sounding.

I'm not sure what you mean though, and this is a late response. :-/
I'll have to remember those.

About the only two show-offy kind of techniques I ever used were octave bends with high distortion and... reverse tapping I guess would be what you call it.

The octave bends would be like...

E|---12--------
B|---15b(17)---
G|-------------
D|-------------
A|-------------
E|-------------

With high distortion and done slowly, the effect it produces is really nice.

And the reverse tapping thing is just fretting the root note with my middle finger of my picking hand and letting my fretting hand do the rest of the work.

What's wrong with Dio?

I should really try to master using normal and reverse tapping in long passages. I want to augment my soloing style (which is generally very diatonic and "inside") with a unique "how the **** did he play that" thing that doesn't sound like crap, like some of the aforementioned Mr. Vai's more idiotic aural experimentations.

EDIT: Nothing's WRONG with Dio, exactly, it's just that my (and many other people that would be more open to metal if it had this) personal preference has always been for the more melodic, non-operatic singers with a clear degree of vocal control, and not so much penchant for vibratoing their dubiously-intonated bellows to the stratosphere. :) I'm basically saying that if there were more accessible vocalists in metal music, the genre would explode in a way unprecedented. Opeth, for instance, with their new major label debut, are on the cusp of something truly enormous: high-quality metal music with incredibly sophisticated instrumental styles AND top-notch, VERY accessible vocal styles. Akerfeldt's voice is so moving in the clean passages that I found myself loving his death growls almost by default. If more bands could do that, metal music would retain every ounce of musical integrity it possesses and still reach the masses in a way unheard of since hair metal.

Neurotoxin 09-06-2005 08:07 PM

Speaking of Opeth, they have 4 of the top 6 best metal albums of all time as voted on Metal Storm.

That seems like a little overkill, don't you think?

We've already got guitarists like Morello experimenting with more unorthodox methods, so there's plenty of techniques to go around.

I've been trying for some more subtle stuff myself. For more atmospheric stuff, I play open chords and strum them around the twelfth fret to create a harp-like sound.

One trick I think sounds interesting is to create a natural harmonic at the fifth fret, and the quickly tap the twelfth fret. It produces an entirely different sound.

While messing around with effects one day at the music shop, I ended up using a reverb pedal and muted strings to reproduce sound effects like footsteps and a heartbeat.

Personally, I could care less how the bands chart, so long as they have enough money to keep making good albums. Record sales don't mean a hell of a lot to me outside of getting adequate returns on the investment.

Hence why Opeth fanboys rank just about as lowly as Tool fanboys in my book.

Interesting. Yesterday, I just discovered this technique. A very unique variation on tapped artificial harmonics.

And Cain, I was messing around with a cool effect earlier- Max flange, tons of reverb, and my wah pedal all going at once. It was a very odd sound. It kind of created a sort of "oceanic" tone, in the sense that it sounded like waves of water. :-/ It was sweet.

Cain 09-06-2005 08:50 PM

Yeah, that's the sound that I got. The wah, distortion, and flange all combined with feedback to make these cascading pulsing noises. It's pretty cool. :)

What exactly is your setup, Cain? You sound like you have a lot of crap. For me, I just have it all packed into one sexy gray box, also known as a Digitech RP300A. It's great for n00b effects.

Yeah, it's a prime interval, meaning the same note.

Correct, it's actually a unison note, but either way both strings are playing the same note.

Holy crap. :|

I have an acoustic and an electric. I would really like one of those chorus/flange pedals, how much are they?

And, Garageband is a Mac only program, right?

First question: I believe they are no longer made. You'd be better off just getting a BOSS chorus and leaving the flanger to your Digitech.

Second question: That it is. Mac only. My roommate is constantly in conniptions over that, because he's jealous that I can record my stuff. I keep telling him that he can get a better program for less money as he's a PC user, but he's emo and so he won't listen.

God evening everyone. I had my first day of high school today. :D

Wait, you have to pay for Garageband? I thought you just DLed it from their site, and you were good to go. What better programs could he get being a PC user, though?

Get Leitmotif too, it's really underrated, and the great thing about Dredg is all their CDs can be found at CD shops for like $10 or less brand new.
