Everyone has mentioned most of my most respected.
Here are the rest: Jeff Lynne Cat Stevens Stephen Stills Steve Miller |
Ah, I forgot Stephen Stills.
|
I respect everyone who makes good music :). I can't quite figure out who I respect the most.
|
I'll try my own list:
1. John Lennon 2. Keith Moon 3. Count Basie 4. Keith Emerson 5. Buddy Rich 6. John Entwistle 7. Ian Anderson 8. Pete Townshend 9. George Harrison 10. Jack Bruce |
I like the change.
Schyma: 1. Bob Dylan 2. Neil Young 3. Bob Marley 4. Jim Morrison 5. John Lennon 6. Jimi Hendrix 7. Miles Davis 9. Johnny Cash 10. Syd Barret There's a rough list that most likely changes with the weather. edit- Hey Schyma (or anyone), who would you stick on a list for people (not just musicians) you'd want to smoke up/trip out with? My list would almost be the same....except I'd stick Einstein on there (he could really contribute to mushroom tripping conversations) and probably Shakespeare too. And Hemingway and Nietzsche.
I don't think I could put a top 10 list or anything, I'd be constantly changing my mind and such. It'd be great to toke up with Einstein, Morrisson, Nietsche, Oscar Wilde, Moses, Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, Descartes... Actually I'm sure there's a ton of people who'd be sweet to toke up with. |
Smoking with Sartre and Camus would be cool. And Foucalt. And many other people already listed.
|
I give this list thing a go:
Bob Dylan Miles Davis (as a musician, at least) Pete Townshend Sylvester Stewart (as a musician, at least) Eh, this is pretty tough |
Very respectable list there Badmoon. You basically included everyone that I thought of, but didn't have room for on my list...except for Dr. John, I'm still not very familar with him or his music.
And I notice you are back to the Jerry avatar. I remember you had that exact same avatar when I first joined this site. You only had like 6 thousand posts back then. I still thought that was a monsterous amount. Penny Lane is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Same with Strawberry Fields and the rest of the songs from MMT. edit- Fireworks tonight! I'm not sure if it's Saskatchewan's or just Regina's 100th birthday....but man is our city celebrating. If only those dirty Winnipegers didn't overrun our city for the football game. I hate football and everything it stands for (except teamwork, having fun, and being outside on nice sunny days...which I find most football players/fans forgot about long ago).
I strongly resent that dirty Winnipegers comment  :p I don't think anyone in Regina cares about the 100th birthday, hehe, it's definitely all about the labour day classic. btw you guys won incase you weren't paying attention    |
Oh ya, I want in on this list making deal:
1. John Lennon 2. Bob Dylan 3. Neil Young 4. Bob Marley 5. David Gilmour 6. Keith Richards 7. Jimmy Page 8. Jimi Hendrix 9. Jim Morrisson 10. Ian Anderson |
Anyone here remember that one kid who said that Angus Young was the best guitarist of all time?
|
Anyone here remember that one kid who said that Angus Young was the best guitarist of all time?
One?? Don't you mean those thousands who have all eventually disappeared? |
No, this one kid didn't let up. He created a thread in it that quickly turned into a huge argument/flame war between him and most of the regs in here. I remember two points that he raised where that Angus Young was great because he got his own guitar brand (and also, that all talented guitarists used Gibsons and Fenders were overrated and for untalented guitarists) and that he was the most entertaining live guitarist.

Really? hehe I don't remember that. I'm guessing you had a good time with that one eh? |

When did this happen? I don't remember it. |
I don't think I could even make a list.
|
This was a few months ago, like March or April or something, I think.
|
I never come in this thread I know Schyma hangs out in here and thinks really high of y'all so I figured I'd post here too. I love Classic Rock and know abit about alot of different and diverse bands. Lately I've been getting into a little Zappa and CAN and all of that psychedelia. I wish to post here in the near future. :)

In classic (hard) rock the guitar solo is often an important part. While classic rock seems to regain its popularity (not so much in Holland I think) I wonder if the younger ones are willing to practise their buds of to become a guitar heroes and play in bands, like in the past. Or is this a thing from the past and do they only listen to the music nowadays ...
(By the way, I'm 43 and play guitar myself in the classic rock cover band Arrowhead from Amsterdam) |
Soloing isn't the only part of being a great guitarist.
|
Soloing isn't the only part of being a great guitarist.
true... |
I know young kids who are willing to work hard at it to be great soloists.
|
I know young kids who are willing to work hard at it to be great soloists.
Aren't they just missing the point, then? |
Aren't they just missing the point, then?
um... no. |
What's the point of taking up guitar just to be a great soloist?
|
What's the point of taking up guitar just to be a great soloist?
I never said the took up guitar just to be a great soloist. I said they're willing to work hard to become great soloists. Besides you can still have fun just being a soloist. |
Besides if that's what you want to do, then why not?
|
Then I stand corrected.
|
Besides if that's what you want to do, then why not?
Exactly. |
I, myself, would be happy just to get the basics down, nevermind soloing.
|
Being able to write good lyrics and music and being able to compose good original material is, in my opinion more important than being a virtuoso who can play fast scales or brilliant solo's. I mean Jeff Beck is an awesome guitarist but he has the inability to write great songs.

I'm gonna have to disagree, unless you're talking about lyrics not musical composition. |
I'm gonna have to disagree, unless you're talking about lyrics not musical composition.
Why do you disagree? No matter how good someone is at soloing, if their music is boring and uninspired, they're not going to get many fans. If brilliant soloing was more important, no one would know who The Beatles were, and Dream Theater would be the biggest band in the world. |

Jeff Beck is far from boring and uninspired... I was just disagreeing with the statement about Beck. |

He was disagreeing specifically about Jeff Beck, not about the entire theory. And personally, I don't find Beck's music very boring and uninspired. |
Jeff Beck is far from boring and uninspired...
I was just disagreeing with the statement about Beck.
Ohh.... gotcha. I misunderstood. My mistake. I agree, Jeff Beck is awesome. I agree the Beatles had amazing solos, but they weren't exactly the bread and butter of the Beatles career. |
I'm back and my baseball team is second best in Ontario.
Yes we lost in the finals. I have yet to find the big deal aabout Jeff Beck, although all I have is Truth. Beck's Bolero is a good song, I can't get into the rest of it. |
My favorite album by him so far is Blow By Blow. Amazing instrumentals (having Terry Bozzio on drums always helps). Truth is good, but I don't like it as much mainly because the vocals annoy me.
And too bad about the finals man, thats rough. |
That would be retarded if most of those songs were banned...
If Gimme Shelter was banned I would flip. Its my favorite song ever, after Won't Get Fooled Again and Comfortably Numb. @thickasabrick: Its cool, I didn't mean to offend you with my post. I guess I was several pages late with both of those posts (I went to the US Open yesterday.) |
Have you heard Blow by Blow? It's way better than Truth.
123. And Obi One Kenodi, none of those songs would be banned. At least, I can't imagine that happening. They just have a little double meaning now. |
