Question for Joel: It it normal for my left hand to have no finger strength when I play drums? I'm trying to get through Stick Control and my left hand is just terrible. :-\

Just do more left-hand based excercises. I know Im not Joel, but Im still a drummer. Stick Control is a wicked mad book, and by the end your left hand should be fine. The excercises that you find hardest are the one's you should practice most to build up the strength.

And yes it's normal, because most of the time your hitting out all the 16th's on the hat's and what not with your right.

Yeah but they're all balanced exercises in there :p

All of them are hard at any decent tempo though :-\ I can do a hybrid open roll in that I play all 16th notes when I do it, but it ends up being like RRLRRL I just never noticed heh. It's terrible though because it feels like I have bad technique or something. Like on the pad, left and right make 2 different pitches. I wish I could afford a teacher.

It's not always bad technique, it's just if your naturally right handed, then your going to be stronger with your right hand at everything. I've never seen you drum so I cant pass judgement on your technique, but that book is where it's at, just keep working it.

Hmm, yeah, I s'pose. I'll just have to start practicing more like an hour+ a day like I used to, but just on stick control.

Your going to get mega bored of it. Make sure you do alot of kit practice as well then.

Indeed. I've heard it's deadly boring, but for £8.67 an hour normal (£13 an hour sunday overtime!), I'm more than happy to be bored a few hours a day.
