RockAndRoll 09-04-2005 04:50 PM

I think banning songs in general is dumb.

Walrus Gumboot 09-04-2005 04:51 PM
Kanye!!

Edit: With all due respect, I don't think you're very close to the truth. if you're going to blame anyone for what's happened in NO, blame the Louisiana authorities.
Or FEMA, who turned away fresh water from Wal Mart, fan boats from Florida and Gasoline from some source when people were in need of them, for reasons yet to be explained

I wouldn't ever Blame Bush directly, as some of my fellow Americans are doing. I actually got a chain mail letter asking me to sign a petition "to make Bush reduce the oil prices". Ugh.

thickasabrick 09-04-2005 05:04 PM
I think banning songs in general is dumb.
Unless of course the song is by any of those devil worshipping, law breaking, hip swinging Rock n Rollers.......like Jerry Lee Lewis!

edit- ^^ about this whole oil business and such...I got an email saying September 1st was National Don't By Any Gas Day, because they thought it would **** up all the oil companies or something. Either way, I forgot about it and filled up my car that day, and then my mom made me go fill hers up too. Oh well.

DeusExMachina 09-04-2005 05:36 PM

To be honest, I think Bush is given way too much criticism. When he does stuff wrong, it's fair to criticize, but people jump on him if ANYTHING goes wrong, and a lot of it isn't his fault. Also, the fact that he's a conservative doesn't make conservative opinions wrong. Openmindedness involves also being able to accept opinions you don't agree with.

That's absolutely right.

Distant Echoes 09-04-2005 05:46 PM

True, but he still makes too many mistakes I thnk the be worhty of president. Todays a good example, he said "the relief effort in new Orleans is unacceptable". Whos he trying to blame? But aside from even a blame game, its a nationwide thing, and everybody saw disaster coming, on any scale. Most of it is his fault - including a few years ago they tried to pass adequate funding to restore the New Orlean Levees. Guess who denied that? Mr. Bush.

Overcritisized - yes
Worthy of pres. - yes

****, even I gave into this political speech in the classic rock thread...
So i just downloaded Live Rust. Cant wait to hear it! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Walrus Gumboot 09-04-2005 06:10 PM
Actually Bush could reduce the price of oil, but it will involve increasing taxes again and people would get mad again.
Bush couldn't, but congress could

I don't see Bush as the one to blame as much as the posterboy for a crooked administation

But really, there's no bad time for that song.

np: Grateful Dead - Loose Lucy. I'm finally beginning to slowly get into these guys.

But seriously, Great Balls Of Fire is a cool song.

Once you start liking them, it's hard to stop :D

Seafroggys 09-04-2005 06:41 PM

Banning songs is the worst sin ever on this Earth. Actually that applies to art in general.

And even though I dislike Bush with a passion, he's not always at fault to everything. Blame must be redirected to Secretary of State, Congress, the Courts, Attorney General, lobbying groups, etc.

Kreator2112 09-04-2005 07:01 PM

jerry lee lewis is a classically trained musician, of course his work will be great

Love 'em. The first songs i was introduced to as a drummer by my drum teacher.. So naturally i'm stuck to it. Recently discovered the joys of Aerosmith

DeusExMachina 09-04-2005 07:19 PM

I never really got into the Dead. I respect them for their contributions to music, but I can only take them in small doses. Maybe I should just listen to them more.

At least we "follow" someone with decent musical talent, unlike Slipknot. GTFO my thread.

DeusExMachina 09-04-2005 07:24 PM

They should just ban his IP.

Name one person in this thread who thinks Garcia is the highest form of human existance....or even the highest form of musician.

I like Garcia, he's an all around cool guy, and good musician. But I could name about two dozen people I would bow to before bowing to Garcia.

Walrus Gumboot 09-04-2005 07:27 PM

I don't think he has done anything bad enough to warrent that, besides being pretty annoying. I still can't quite figure him out. He morphed from a CR hater to a deadhead

This got me thinking.....

Top 10 musicians I respect the most
------------------------------------
1. Syd Barrett
2. John Coltrane
3. John Lennon
4. Bob Dylan
5. Jim Morrison
6. Jeff Beck
7. Miles Davis
8. Frank Zappa
9. Robert Johnson
10. Jerry Garcia

That was hard as hell. Still kinda unsure about this. :-/
I don't think he has done anything bad enough to warrent that, besides being pretty annoying. I still can't quite figure him out. He morphed from a CR hater to a deadhead
I like the change.

Schyma:
1. Bob Dylan
2. Neil Young
3. Bob Marley
4. Jim Morrison
5. John Lennon
6. Jimi Hendrix
7. Miles Davis
9. Johnny Cash
10. Syd Barret

There's a rough list that most likely changes with the weather.

edit- Hey Schyma (or anyone), who would you stick on a list for people (not just musicians) you'd want to smoke up/trip out with? My list would almost be the same....except I'd stick Einstein on there (he could really contribute to mushroom tripping conversations) and probably Shakespeare too. And Hemingway and Nietzsche.

Badmoon 09-04-2005 08:09 PM

1. Jerry Garcia
2. Johnny Cash
2. Woody Guthrie
3. George Harrison
4. Elvis Presely
5. Jimmy Cliff
6. D. Boon
7. Bob Marley
7. Peter Tosh
8. David Grisman
9. Bob Dylan
10. Dr. John

Runners Up:

Tim DeLaughter
Warren Haynes
Bill Monroe
Tony Rice
Jeff Lynne
Paul Mcartney
etc

Some I respect equally...and couldn't leave out.

DeusExMachina 09-04-2005 08:18 PM

I could never do a top 10. Maybe in a specific genre, but never an overall top 10.

thickasabrick 09-04-2005 08:19 PM

Very respectable list there Badmoon. You basically included everyone that I thought of, but didn't have room for on my list...except for Dr. John, I'm still not very familar with him or his music.

And I notice you are back to the Jerry avatar. I remember you had that exact same avatar when I first joined this site. You only had like 6 thousand posts back then. I still thought that was a monsterous amount.

Penny Lane is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Same with Strawberry Fields and the rest of the songs from MMT.

edit- Fireworks tonight! I'm not sure if it's Saskatchewan's or just Regina's 100th birthday....but man is our city celebrating. If only those dirty Winnipegers didn't overrun our city for the football game. I hate football and everything it stands for (except teamwork, having fun, and being outside on nice sunny days...which I find most football players/fans forgot about long ago).

MMT is good, but I find that six of the tracks are really incredible. I Am The Walrus, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields Forever, All You Need is Love, Hello Goodbye, and The Fool on the Hill. That's my take of the album, at least.

Are you the one that lived in New Orleans? If so, how are things going?

Badmoon 09-04-2005 08:29 PM

Nope, I'm from Illinois.

I think Guitrguy and Gilmour are from somewhere in Louisiana.

thunderzstruck 09-04-2005 08:30 PM

oh ok not you then

Well it's good to know your safe

thickasabrick 09-04-2005 08:30 PM
Are you the one that lived in New Orleans? If so, how are things going?
I think Badmoon lives in Chicago.

I think MMT is the Beatles best album plainly because I love them for the fact that they made beautiful music, and their most beautiful songs are on this album.

edit- I suppose I'm a little late on the uptake.

DeusExMachina 09-04-2005 08:36 PM

Yeah, they both had to evacuate. Hope they're ok...

2. George Harrison
3. Neil Young
4. Elvis Costello
5. Pete Townshend
6. David Bowie
7. Johnny Cash
8. Frank Zappa
9. Jim Morrison
10. Iggy Pop

Random fact - Eddie Van Halen plays the guitar solo in Michael Jackson's "Beat It", which is an awesome song.

Walrus Gumboot 09-04-2005 08:43 PM

I'm sure if they evacuated they're fine

Maybe homeless and completely broke, but fine

Imagine having two days notice to plan to rebuild your life? You would have to find what you needed to bring, where you would go, and then leave your house knowing that you will never see it again. I couldn't imagine. If I had a choice, I would probably go to Oregon, though

Phil Lesh-For being an amazing bassist and person
Frank Zappa-For being rediculously original
George Harrison-For being a good person musician
Neil Young-Do I need to explain?

Nietzsche and Einstein for sure Timothy Leary, George Clinton, Ash Ra Tempel, the original Merry Pranksters, my dad, Bob Marley, King George III and all the CR regulars so we could argue over music. Each time I get into a conversation about music with my friends they always get pissed at me because I own them soooo bad. (seriously) Does that happen to anyone else?

Lunch 09-04-2005 09:42 PM

My friends are too cool for music.

Musicians I respect the most:
Hendrix
Jeff Beck
Entwistle
Townshend (as a writer)
JPJ (yea that's right, fanboy over here)
Ginger Baker
Bob Dylan
Jerry Garcia
Ian Anderson
David Gilmour
Eric Clapton
George Harrison
