Who likes my new avatar??:naughty:
|
Oh......him.
He's the guitarist from Freak Kitchen, if you (or anyone else) wants you could post your email and I'll send a few tracks. I'd really recommend giving him a try.
I love the way JP uses themes and vocal melodies from Metropolis Pt 1 as guitar solos in Pt 2.
Me too, especially when he throws little variations on them.
I like SFOAM better than awake... I just can't get into awake at all except space dye vest, which is magnificent.
I personally think Scenes From A Memory is kind of boring, there's a couple of great tracks but there's too many tracks that (for me) bring the story along but fail to intrest me on a musical level. Awake is by far my favourite Dream Theater album because it all intrests me musically. At least we have some common ground on 'Space Dye Vest' though. |
Voices is the only song that I enjoy on Awake, I got into it cause it goes from Octavarium to that on Once In a Livetime on winamp, so I always listen to it.
|
51. Tool is NOT prog. If anyone insists they are, kill them.
/prepares knife |
I'm not sure what I'd class Tool as. hmmmm....
|
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence tickles my fancy quite well.
6 degrees > other DT albums IMO. blind faith and disappear are great songs |
6 degrees > other DT albums IMO.
blind faith and disappear are great songs
The Glass Prison is the best song (on 6DOIT) IMO, after that it's got to be the song 6 Degrees. |
/prepares knife
Med 57 said Tool were prog in his prog feature :smash: |
Do you think if I hit Petrucci with a stick a few times he'll agree to make DT play Space dye vest on the next tour?
They legally can't... |
They legally can't...
That can't be right, it's a Dream Theater song, it's just the band's desicion not to play it. |
I'm not fussed that they don't play it...I'm just glad they still play all the goodens like Metrop pt.1 and Learning to Live.
|
Yeah, I'm sure they could, unless KevMo took out an injunction to prevent them of some sort.
|
:) Yeah, I'd say they're alternative/progressive rock, for want of a better genre. They're hard to classify really though. There are definitely elements of prog in their music, anyway.
Alternative/Progressive metal I'd say. |
They're definitely progressive at times, I couldn't understand all of the points on that list.
|
i think they're talented guys, but the effort and talent could make better music. i dont like the songs, only the technical ability.

What songs have you heard. Im not questioning your judgment, I just want to know what songs you have heard. |
I have a few Tool albums. The only songs I listen to offen are Stinkfist and Schism.

i've only had a chance to listen to metropolis II and watched the portnoy DVD. is it they're less accessable stuff? it just didn't click with me i guess |
I've got scenes from a memory which I really like but is it just me or is Train Of Thought and the new one really dull albums? I just find Train Of Thought really boring.
|
I don't listen to Octavium too often for that reason, but I love Train Of Thought. I can't really explain why, because it's opinion based, but I just don't find it boring. The only problem with it is that sometimes it seems they are more concerned with showing off technical ability than writing a good song, but I can live with that.
Do you like the older albums like Awake? |
i've only had a chance to listen to metropolis II and watched the portnoy DVD. is it they're less accessable stuff? it just didn't click with me i guess
You've listened to the whole of Metropolis Pt. 2: SFAM? Well that's regarded as one of their best albums by most fans, but it is very progressive so won't appeal to all.
I've got scenes from a memory which I really like but is it just me or is Train Of Thought and the new one really dull albums? I just find Train Of Thought really boring.
I don't find ToT boring whatsoever, I think its an amazing album. But it is far less varied than all the others. You should get Images & Words :thumb: |
The haunting riffs that introduce alot of the ToT songs are brilliant, such as the Honour thy father one
|
The intro to As I Am is excellent as well. In fact, that album as a whole just seems a lot darker/heavier than their other works.
|
Listen to LaBrie on The Killing Hand, live at the Marquee at about 4.35. Wow.
|
YYYeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......that's one quality scream. Never knew he could do it that well.

thats the highlight of the whole cd :thumb: |

hehe, awesome. I love that part. I laugh when their old singer attempts to pull it off on the album and fails. |
Where abouts is it in the studio version??
|

Yes indeed..."Endless Sacrifice" was a great one, too...it kinda reminded me of a prog version of "Sanitarium". |

I'm pretty sure that Space Dye Vest hasn't been played live only as a gesture to Kevin Moore, as it's pretty much his song. I don't think there are any legal reasons why they couldn't play it live, if they really wanted to. The band would own the rights to it, I'd imagine.
They definately have prog elements. I think that the comment saying they aren't was tongue-in-cheek, saying that they aren't prog because they don't have long solos etc. They have long songs, concept albums and strange time signatures which are defining characteristics of a prog band in my opinion. |

Could someone possibly YSI that album to me? email is bjwumr@gmail.com if someone would be so kind. :) |

Kevin Moore wrote and performed all of it except a vocal track. If you look at the Awake CD cover, it's under a different publisher and Kevin owns the rights. I love SOC only when Vacant is played before. It creates an incredible atmosphere...then SOC just comes in with the heavy stuff.

Yeah, it's a brilliant continuation and progression on the themes presented in Vacant. |

To put it intelligently.:thumb: |
I'm a genius, what do you expect. My music teacher calls me the "teacher", and I freequently make her jaw drop with my wild amount of knowledge.

My music teacher say I'm the best guitarist he's ever had in his class. And he's been teaching for about 10 years. |
Well... isn't that sweet. I can't play guitar very well, but I've been playing bass for a good 5 years. How long have you been playing?
I could play the Metropolis tapping solo when I was 12... :upset: |
