Sorry for being stupid, or uneducated in the ways of DIY, but if I don't print directly to the stencil material for painting, how would I transfer without fucking it up, seeing as I have zero art talent.
Well the way I did it, was use some semi transperant film, then taped the film to the back, hung it up by a window and traced through, then cut along the lines.
If you're doing it another way, print it, cut out the stencil, then place that on top of the stencil material and trace the edges, then cut that out.
I was thinking of printing the picture onto a manilla file folder, cutting it out with an exacto blade, and then taping it to the shirt, and painting it, and leaving it in that position to dry. How's that sound?
That would work perfectly well as long as your printer can handle the folder. |
might work. i jsut described the pro custom way to do it. you are probably going to use a couple of fabric pens in the process though.
|
I was thinking just fabric paint. What would be the most permanent thing to use?
|
either one would prabably work the same but in any other case i would say the paint
|
Definitely go with fabric paint.
|
What do you guys think looks/works better, fabric paint or spray paint?? Because I have an Operation Ivy stencil and I want it to turn out nicely.
|
Fabric paint on a roller. You can get spray on fabric paint though.
|
If you live in London, there's a free screenprinting tutorial every Tuesday evening in the rampART social squat. I went today, it was good.
use double stick tape its A+++ for stencils and very mcuh worth the two$ or so you have to spend
I usually just scotch tape it. |
scotch tape rolled up works ok for big areas, but if you have fine detail sometimes it's too small to make little rolls and that's where double stick comes in handy. less time, too.
|
i use the power of the hand
|
When I stencil I pin that s'hit in place

Would regular spray paint stay on a shirt for a long time?
|
Would regular spray paint stay on a shirt for a long time?
Apparently it depends what kind of paint it is and the background colour. That's what my screen printing teacher told me when I asked him about spraying. I sprayed blue Humbrol Just Spray on denim and it looks great and hasn't run, leaked or faded. The jacket is too small for me though so Im gonna give it to my godbrother. |
What is screen printing?

I made a stencil of this guy:
http://stencilpunx.mattrunningnaked.com/_stencils/ska_man.gif I already spray painted him on my wall, I'm going to make a shirt with him on it too. |

I just made these 2 shirts tonight:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c11/Ghostfire3/Aaron008.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c11/Ghostfire3/Aaron009.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c11/Ghostfire3/Aaron005.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c11/Ghostfire3/Aaron006.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c11/Ghostfire3/Aaron007.jpg The U.S. Bombs one is pretty basic, and unfortunately I rolled a little paint off of the stencil and onto the shirt. I'm pretty happy with the way the Operation Ivy one came out, though. |
Definitely like the op ivy one.
|
The Op Ivy one looks nice.
I don't think the little smudge on the US Bombs ruins it, adds a bit of character and a lot of fake stencil shirts have those marks anyway. |
Yeah, I did that on my Residents shirt. No one really notices it, and it gives it that nice homemade look.

does anyone have a white hat that they really like but because it's white you always get those nasty sweat stains in it, but you won't wash it because it will lose its shape? well here is something for you...instead of using bleach which will ruin the fibres in your hat and make it smell funky, apply a liberal amount of whitening mouthwash onto a cloth (ensure the mouthwash is clear in colour), and then rub the mouthwashy cloth over the sweat stained parts of the hat in question. make sure the mouthwash soakes in, but do not apply to much as that will result in the previously mentioned adverse effects. Leave the hat to completely dry out (about 20 mins with the correct amount of fluid) and you will be left with a brilliantly white, perfectly shaped hat which is also minty fresh

Okay, basically, doesn't that just break down to "Washing white hats with mouthwash works?" That's actually pretty cool though, washing stuff with mouthwash. |
Orange slices clean chucks very nicely.

strange that this should come up, since just yesterday my friends noticed this giant sweat stain in our friend's hat. Unfortunately, the inside of the hat is red, so I don't think that this method will work. Still nice to know, and I'll try it sometime. |
That Op Ivy shirt is awesome.
|
You could always get one of those hat washing cages at the store. They cost like 2 bucks at Big Lots. You just put it in there and throw it in the washer with your regular clothes. That's how I wash my hat, and I wear the thing every single day.
|
*doesn't have a hat* :upset:
|
I have a tophat.
|
I want a scally cap but they're muy expensivo.
|
I have a tophat.
i nearly bought a bowler hat when i was in toronto. but i was ten buxx short. :upset: |
I have a really old flatcap. It is the most awesomely cool looking hat.
|
Yesterday I drew up a simple AM! stencil. It just says Against Me! in that font they always use, and its going to have a pink or yellow, not sure yet, lightning bolt behind the Against Me! part.
Today or tomorrow I'm going to get some fabric paint and a black t-shirt. |
