Everyone hates Chemistry? I love it. Maybe becuase I'm not into the difficult parts of it yet.
What are you having at the moment?

I mean, what kind of chemistry. And some subjects, or something.

Joe 12-13-2005 04:23 PM

I haven't posted here in a few days...

How is everyone? Jom, those exams going ok?

Molecular bonding, atomic numbers, really just the basics but I find it my favourite science and I find it easy to understand.

I remember those days... I took Chem last year. I didn't really like it.

I'm in bio now. We're doing photosynthesis and respiration and its really easy.

Lucky bastard. We completely skipped all of that. I started with molar masses and converting and went into calculating how much of a substance is needed for a reaction and how much would be left over with a given amount. The stuff we're doing now is a bit easier, but I still manage to fall apart on tests.

I find it insanely hard. :(

i hated chemistry, partly because i hated the teacher, but i just find it hard. i like physics though, i took it on for AS / A2 level. we're doing ideal gases and similar crap at the moment though, which is effectively chemistry, and i don't understand it much.

I took AP chem in 10th grade. What a mistake that was. I was pretty much lost from day one. I did good enough some how to go into AP Physics. Physics was easier to understand, but I had a teacher who had a thick German accent. She would screw up every single word. I spent most of the time just trying to translate what she was saying into english.

Now Im taking college forensics. First marking period i got a 95 and second I got a 78. The second marking period we covered the chem section :( and now we are doing crime scene investigation. This class and my law class last year have taught me how to commit a crime and get away with it. It made school worth while for me.
What I really hate is when the professors decide that a writer's voice is a bad thing. I always follow the structure assigned, but I never type anything that I wouldn't say out loud. And I refuse to make my paper some sterile, boring scholastic article. I'd pull a Hunter Thompson before I did that.

However, my Qualitative Research Methods professor gave my final paper a C- because I didn't sound boring enough. Because my prose was too engaging. No, I'm not exaggerating. She actually wrote out suggestions for how I should rephrase whole sentences, and her suggestions were things that only Mr. Spock would say.
Same. Academic language, they call it. We even have to do tasks, where we take a subjective and fluent text and we have to make it "academic". Which means take out all the opinions, push the author to the background and use fancy words. It's silly.

I hate modern writing styles. Everything is so formulaic and intentionally dull. It seems that complex syntax takes a back seat to quality content - at least that's how it seems in my AP English class right now. Just one of the things on my endless list of reasons why reading/writing/language classes are the worst waste of time I've ever encountered in school. Even moreso than my first grade art class.

And a big fat 123 there as well.

My professors have been incredibly fickle; the notoriously hard-grading history prof has given me an average mark of a 3.3 on all my papers, while the easier-grading prof has given me the same score for mine. Odd how that works.
Jom, those exams going ok?
I'll let you know come 4:00PM tomrrow when I'm 5/6 of the way done (if I ever make it there alive, that is) :)
/chem
I liked my chem class in high school because I had an awesome teacher. So long as we did our calculations correct, he was cool.

One time, we had a lab where my lab partner and I calculated 1243% error. In short, we royally fucked up.

On our lab report, we got a 50/50. On the back page, he left the following comment:

"How in the hell did you guys -fu- (he crossed it out) mess up that badly? :-("

It was hilarious.
Superpeer's should be "AIMPeer", seeing Bartenders is "AIMTender"
Isn't that what Jelle's AIM name is :-?

I haven't signed onto my MX AIM name in awhile, so I forget.

AimPeer is my Aim name, Bartender stole my idea.
Of course, they would insist on replacing the word "silly" with "counterproductive" but...
Yeah, what can I say... They seem to think that it's necessary to show off your intelligence in a text, by using a lot of fancy words and difficult sentence structures instead of an intelligent content.

It's true, it seems like they do what (a lot of) politicians do, make everything complex, difficult and unintelligible, so that they come off really vague and they're not questioned too much.

Deconstruction 12-13-2005 04:59 PM
Yeah, what can I say... They seem to think that it's necessary to show off your intelligence in a text, by using a lot of fancy words and difficult sentence structures instead of an intelligent content.
That was why I hated doing research for that class. I passed out three sentences in for any article I was assigned to read.

I'm guessing they think that by coming off unintelligible, they sound like they know what they're talking about.

Me, I can give all the information necessary to demonstrate I understand the topic within 5 pages, tops. But since I have to have at least ten, I shamelessly bullshit, editorialize, and ramble to pad the essay. Way I see it, it's no worse than turning what could be a perfectly clear, one-sentence explanation into a two-paragraph nightmare of convoluted Spock-talk.

Yep, it's useless. Not much we can do though, not right now, anyway.

Someone please give me e-medical help.

I'm hoping I don't have an ingrown toenail, but I'm not sure if I even have one. The skin around my left big-toenail is turning pinkish, and if I put pressure on the toe (like pushing down to the ground with that big toe) it will hurt a little. It's only been like that since around 9:00 this morning, and it's been bugging the hell out of me since.

Ingrown or just a bruise?

It may be to early to tell. If it doesnt go away in a few days, I would go see your doctor. I have heard that ingrown toe-nails can be a bitch.

Ace_of_Bass2112 12-13-2005 05:46 PM

well that sucks. get it taped up and tough it out (shut up jock in my head, shut up). Dont worry about it for a coupel of days and if it is still bothering you go see a doctor. I mean it is your toenail its not like you use your feet for wanking now do you (i said shut up)

Heh, well I use them for walking.

It isn't that it hurts a lot, but it's annoying as hell.

Ace_of_Bass2112 12-13-2005 05:50 PM

i usually do more wanking then walking

Shadows 12-13-2005 05:50 PM

Ingrown nails are indeed extremely painful. I had one off and on for the past two years.

The toe should end up swelling massively, turning purple, and hurting like hell to touch. A pinkish color and slight pain may be the beginning of it, but it's too mild to tell. If it gets worse then you may have a problem.

GenuineImitation 12-13-2005 05:55 PM

Kurtz, we should charge you for this advice. I'll do what my doctor does.

"That would be $100 please."
"For what?"
"For examining you"
"But I was only in the room for less than 5 minutes"
"Im just following my policy"

Instead of him talking to me, its to my mom.

Well you see, the thing is, I don't want to to worsen.

Would soaking my toe with warm water do anything?
