It's what happens after a very long career.

Yield 11-26-2006 05:06 PM

Yeah.

I need to give The Final Cut another listen. I went on a three month break from listening to Floyd ove the summer, and I haven't listened to any of there stuff too much since then.

Riva 11-26-2006 06:03 PM

Rick was session on The Wall, right?

I think The Final Cut gets a bit boring in the middle, but some really stand out tracks are there, and I like the album as a whole a lot more than some of their earlier stuff.

Just as an aside, Michael Kamen has done tons of rock related stuff, as I remember. Metallica, Def Leppard etc.

MattSharpIsCool 11-26-2006 09:51 PM

The Final Cut is like listening to poetry with backing music. Its a lot different than anything else they did.

CardCheat 11-26-2006 09:53 PM

Pink Floyd was a very influential band, and they had great live shows, but I've never been a real fan of their music.

Songs like "Brain Damage", "Eclipse", etc. are very good, but for the most part I've never really been able to get into their music.

Lunch 11-26-2006 10:16 PM

What else have you heard?

CardCheat 11-26-2006 10:34 PM

I have Dark Side of the Moon and Animals, and I've heard songs from other albums. When they're in full swing and whatnot in songs like the ones I mentioned I think they're good, but the long ten minute spells of weird noises that could be found in many of their tunes turns me off of them.

rippa32 11-27-2006 05:41 AM

Just because a song contains weird noises doesnt mean the whole song is weird noises. There is music there.

CaptainWaits 11-27-2006 12:41 PM

I've been becoming a big fan of Pink Floyd lately. My favorite release is still WYWH. Currently I only own The Wall, WYWH, and DSOTM, but I've heard the majority of their material.

Next on my list is Meddle and Animals.

Kingofdudes 11-27-2006 01:51 PM

Both good choices

Yield 11-27-2006 06:44 PM

I read somewhere that Michael Kamen passed away some time in 2003. Someone back me up on this.

edit: yes, he did

Pink Floyd are the type of band where you can't just hear their songs, you have to actually listen to their music to truly appreciate it. Remove all other possible distractions and immerse yourself in their music and suddenly those "10 minute spells of weird noises" will become so much more than that. Oh, and to truly appreciate Pink Floyd, I find, you almost have to listen to their albums from start to finish. I love the fact that they aren't a singles band.

Yield 11-27-2006 07:24 PM

Yeah, that's what I love about Pink Floyd. You can listen to one of their longer songs such as Dogs or Echoes, and you can just give it a good listen, without any distraction. That's all it takes to appreciate the Pink Floyd sound.

I agree with absolutely everything you say. Too many people shrug off Pink Floyd after only listening to them casually.

TheMisterBungle 11-27-2006 09:02 PM

Totally. You should listen to them religiously for the best experience.
I love to just turn on my lava lamp and turn on a Floyd album.
Great stuff.

Yield 11-27-2006 09:40 PM

Man, I did that once while listening to Dark Side. It was awesome!

rippa32 11-28-2006 06:55 AM

I have listened to Animals in the dark with only the dim lights from my Hi-Fi on. It was pretty cool.

Danger Bird 11-28-2006 03:56 PM

Hey, try listening to Careful With That Axe, Eugene with headphones at night and no lights.

Lunch 11-28-2006 03:57 PM

Pink Floyd + Shrooms = Cliched Amazing Experience.

MattSharpIsCool 11-28-2006 05:01 PM

Still haven't tried that.

But yes, Pink Floyd is better when you listen to their entire album at once, instead of picking and choosing a few songs.

Riva 11-28-2006 05:58 PM

Pink Floyd + No Drugs = Amazing Experience that matches a drug induced idiocy.

And yeah, just slapping Echoes, Dogs and Alan's Psychadelic Breakfast on a CD would be terrifying for any new fan. :p They'd just be so out of context.

Leper 11-28-2006 06:16 PM

My friends and I listened to DSOTM in it's entirety after eating shrooms. Unfortunately I didn't start tripping until after.:(

But yes, I think they sound just as good while sober as they do while stoned.

Lunch 11-28-2006 06:39 PM

I've never heard more amazing music than when I was tripping, sorry Riva.

Leper 11-28-2006 07:52 PM

Live at Pompeii + Weed = GET ON YOUR KNEES AND BOW DOWN

robo2448 11-28-2006 08:31 PM

Listening to Floyd at night in the dark with headphones is the way to go. Especially if you have 1 candle burning. The smell kind of fills the air and combined with the music... woah. Better than any drug experiences.

Danger Bird 11-28-2006 08:40 PM

Of course, adding a fatty to the combination wouldn't hurt ;)

I would recommend trying psychedelics before you jump to that conclusion.

hard_rocker89 11-28-2006 09:29 PM

Pink Floyd is ****ing sweet! :chug:

Screw the drugs...the music is just as good (if not better) when you're sober lol :smoke:
Yeah...Pink Floyd's Animals & Wish You Were Here albums are pretty ****in' awesome too. Been digging 'em a lot lately. :thumb:

rippa32 11-28-2006 09:48 PM

Well I don't see why you should listen to them on drugs. The band themselves barely did them. Also look at Jethro Tull, incredibly creative band and 100% sober.

standard 11-28-2006 09:58 PM

They are good not on drugs.. But you are all saying how amazing it is to sit in a dark room and listen to them... Try smoking and joint and doing it, then you will understand.

I never did until I tried it... It's so much more intense, you have such a better understand of the music and so much more emotion.

Of course, I still love Floyd not under the influence.
