I agree he's great, but james is better. :p
better as in guitar or just better. I shall smite thee if you say he is better in guitar |
i dno james is pretty good...haha
joe satriani sed kirk is amazing, so im pretty sure techinally hes the douglas. but those who don't like his new stuff probably attribute it to metallicas general deteriotation in the 90's...if u believe they deterioated at all. |
James had a mean down-picking attack back in the day. :-\

james the best of all time???
cos according to friggin earthling keith richards holds the title for the Worlds Best Rhythm Guitarist. (scoffs) cos theres that world music federation that releases these titles. he was indeed the ultimate frontman, altho i fear with all this SKOM stuff hes gone soft. he says he doesnt even feel it necessary to swear on stage nemore. between kirk, james and lars, metallica is soon to be the most metrosexual metal band out there. |
James is an amazing rythem guitarist with out a doubt, he down picks faster than most of us can alternate , His solo's differ to kirks in that they're usually slower more emotional melody's, where kirk likes to kick the guitars ars* and shred the whole neck... Technically Kirk is a more skilled guitarist, but does that make him a better guitarist ?

better, yes...greater, not necessarily

I can alt pick faster than James can downpick, trust me. Not to brag but I can tremelo pretty damn fast. Hetfieled's much more better than Kirk. Don't forget James wrote most of his songs using no theory and that's pretty hard. |

True but Kirk is definately losing it when it comes to solos. He's getting sloppier and sloppier.

If you could choose the direction Metallica went with their music where would you send them?
I'd love to hear them do something radical...Still Metal, but the guitars shouldn't sound like Metallica..something Jazzy. It wouldn't really work though and I'm pretty sure 'tallica don't listen to much Jazz (what do they listen to?). Any better ideas? |
I'd send 'em power metal, proper steel armour hen they perform live and stuff.
|
they should try out Pinch Harmonics, Have they ever used them? I just want to hear them do something which is a different to what they have done without it being Nu Metal a la St Anger.
|
Yeah there's plenty of pinch harmonics in Tallica songs. I myself didn't notice until a few weeks back.
|
Yeah there's plenty of pinch harmonics in Tallica songs. I myself didn't notice until a few weeks back.
really, give me some examples? It's wierd that I can;t think of one example, I know they use lots of Natural Harmonics which sound cool (like on Sanitarium).
|
Of Wolf and Man solo is the only one I can think of right now without my tabbooks  but there's a few on the Black Album.
|

Yeh, his Solo's on RTL, MOP and AJFA are really tight.
really, give me some examples? It's wierd that I can;t think of one example, I know they use lots of Natural Harmonics which sound cool (like on Sanitarium).
There's quite a lot on 'Nothing Else Matters' |
You heard them performing way back in 1984/5? Kirk manages to totally fuck over the RTL solo. It was painful.
|
I only really like Kirk's slower solos such as the intros to the big epic songs. When he plays faster his solos seem to lose all their emotion, not that I don't like the odd bit of 'wankage', but I generally prefer slower solos.
|
wank isn't censored
It's a great English word. |

As much as I love Metallica, and as much as I love Kirk Hammett, I cant stand his live solo's. This has probably been said many a time, but he cannot bend properly AT ALL, and his live improvisations also suck, he just has no melody, and sounds horrible. But apart from that, he does some killer solos on albums. |
Mmm, his live solos leave quite a bit to be desired.

That was before Hetfield and Hammet shared the 'RTL' solo, was it not? |
That was before Hetfield and Hammet shared the 'RTL' solo, was it not?
I believe so. I didn't know they ever shared it actually. |
I believe so. I didn't know they ever shared it actually.
yeh, because Hammet kept bastarding it up, Hetfield always did the start bit, and Hammet finished it off. |
wank isn't censored
It's a great English word.
oh good....wanky wank wank mcwankington von wank wank then:D Kirks solos just sound to mechanical for me at times, they don't really flow all that well. I'm not trying to be so critical as he has written some briliant solos, but others really bug me. |
Hahaha, Geez Hammett.

 it doesn't surprise me.
Kirks solos just sound to mechanical for me at times, they don't really flow all that well. Maybe if he combined his notes with say Marty Friedmans note durations they'd be more interesting. |
