I love Dylan and the Dead. Both Dylan and the Dead probably play below their usual levels, but I think it's still great. It's just a fun album to listen to. Queen Jane is definitely one of my favorite Dylan songs. Once school starts, I'll be really bored and will probably make a list of my favorite Dylan songs.

robo2448 09-01-2005 04:33 PM
I think Dylan's live stuff is good (based on the bootlegs and Before The Flood), but that album is just agonizing. I can't explain it.
Should I buy Before the Flood? I hadn't heard great things about it, but that's just from Amazon reviewers who I don't really trust. How do you like the album?

Did you read the part of Chronicles where Dylan is describing his situation at the time he's collaborating with The Grateful Dead? Best part of the book.

I still need Chronicles. Since we've been talking about the library, I should check to see if my library has that.

I'd get it.

Don't listen to Amazon reviewers.

Half of them are gimmicks anyways.

My school has rendered me practically paralized by AP Calc. Must. get. into. good. college....

I really like Ballad of a Thin Man, its a little bit hypnotic

robo2448 09-01-2005 04:42 PM

I'm liking that Paul McCartney CD I got from my library. It's all covers of '50s rock songs, it's kind of like John Lennon's Rock and Roll album. Paul has a good voice for those kinds of songs.

np- McCartney- Twenty Flight Rock

I'm listening to Ballad of a Thin Man right now! I just started it as I clicked into this thread. Great song. God**** Bob Dylan is amazing. I've got a wicked caffeine buzz right now, I've never actually felt this way from drinking tea.

Ballad of a Thin Man has really haunting lyrics. The first time I heard that song I was like woah. I was blown away the first time I heard Highway 61 Revisited. By the time I got to Desolation Row, I felt like I was in another world.

np- Sheep- This conversation is making me think I should put on some Dylan, but PF is good for now.

thickasabrick 09-01-2005 05:15 PM

To tell you the truth, I don't really like Animals very much. I like the concept and everything, but I think it's Pink Floyds worst album.

redlense 09-01-2005 05:55 PM

The Wall

Yeah, you had to be in a certain frame of mind for Animals. The Wall is one of the best albums of all time.
Dave

I haven't read this entire thread yet....but I'm finding it fascinating....
I recently purchased America Live In Central Park 1979 DVD & it's changed my life as well as Woodstock The Music DVD which goes off!!!
Here are some of the bands which I think are truly awesome...look them up on Google:

*Leslie West's Mountain (very Heavy)
*Uriah Heep (who I believe influenced Iron Maiden)
*Marc Bolan & T.Rex
*Black Sabbath
*Jefferson Airplane
*Ten Years After
*Santana

I'll have to stop....I'm getting too excited......

Yours Truly,

Simon :D

I never got really big into Pink Floyd , but i do like another brick in the wall and comfortably numb , especially the hello , hello , hello part , . Me and my friends go around singin that part all the time .

Glitterati 09-01-2005 06:14 PM

Hey, there's a thread on The Kinks!

I've read the whole thread.

Not all at once, but I've read up to the point where I joined in the discussion.

JonG 09-01-2005 06:45 PM

In addition to robo's post, does anybody have Before the Flood, and are willing to upload?
I hate Dylan and the Dead

I got it because I am a big Dylan fan, but it's pretty brutal stuff.
Face it, you hate it because the Dead completely outshine Dylan.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 09-01-2005 07:28 PM

No, Dylan and the Dead is actully really bad. :)

thickasabrick: I agree, Animals is probablly my least favorite of all the Floyd's material.

After a few days of trying I've come to the conclusion that the Jeff Beck bootleg will never be downloaded. I think it's because my computer doesn't like RAR files.
:upset:

Has anyone heard of the Incredible String Band? They're really good I downloaded 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion along time ago thinking it was going to be psychedelia and it ended up being British Folk. Not that I was disappointed because this is great music and one of my favorite folk albums for sure.

Lunch 09-01-2005 07:32 PM

Well, Dylan and the Dead certainly isn't great, but it's not terrible. And as I said, Dylan drags the performance down.

Next time I have a few bucks and I'm feeling adventurous, I'm going to get an ISB album from Amazon, along with maybe an H.P. Lovecraft album, etc. Gotta keep expanding the psychedelic collection. Which reminds me, have you heard Clear Light's s/t? I've heard good things about it.

thickasabrick 09-01-2005 07:33 PM

I don't think The Dead outshine Dylan, I think they find the perfect equalibrium.

As for Uriah Heep being mentioned (I saw it in a quote) on the last page....I've got two, possibly three, of their albums and I actually only listened to them all once. I just didn't really find them that fascinating. Not horrible though, they are worth checking out to see if you like them.

I used to read everything, but after a while I just quit.

To read eveything now would be extrememly long.

robo2448 09-01-2005 07:45 PM

I read like 200 pages of this thread before I joined. I was a long-time reader before I started posted. I've been reading back a lot in the thread, and eventually I'll have the whole thread read.

Walrus Gumboot 09-01-2005 07:50 PM

I was thinking I should probably jump in, I knew some of you from the Beatles thread, I just waited for someone to say that I could post to continue the conversation. This thread is hard to become a reg in though. I think robo is our earliest, and he came in a while ago, too. I wonder if there are other threads on this forum with serious regs like us

PS- Me thinks Dylan and the Dead could have been much better if it was done earlier in their careers

Wow, I think they had some good songs not great though but I would say they were on the better side of the psychedelic scene in LA. It's good stuff check it out. They're bassist played on the Doors albums too and the drummer played with CSN. I wish I could talk Psyche more often. :(

I'm still trying to get H.P. Lovecraft album. I downloaded some songs I thought were by them and it ended up being H.P. Lovecraft's horror stories. :-/

Lunch 09-01-2005 07:57 PM

Well I heard Paul Rothchild produced Clear Light, so that sparked my interest, as well as recognizing Dallas Taylor's name.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 09-01-2005 08:06 PM

He did? That would make sense I mean they did record for Elektra.

It took me awhile to become reg in this thread I remember arguing with Moon about how much more diverse the Grateful Dead were than Pink Floyd or something of that nature. I remember he completely schooled me (even though he should of because they are way more diverse) and felt really bad because I was schooled so hard.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 09-01-2005 08:37 PM

My guitarist comp was bumped today and I can't help but be satisfied with the results. I can't beleave Jeff Beck got 5th! An all Classic Rock final poll the metal heads were pissed. :D

I was a Jeff Beck noob when that poll was around, but if it happened again now, I'd probably vote Beck. I prefer Gilmour personally, but I won't deny that Beck is the more talented/diverse of the two.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 09-01-2005 09:16 PM

I love the way allmusic put it:

"While he was as innovative as Jimmy Page, as tasteful as Eric Clapton, and nearly as visionary as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck never achieved the same commercial success as any of his contemporaries, primarily because of the haphazard way he approached his career." - by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

DeusExMachina 09-01-2005 09:25 PM

That is a nice quote. He seems like he'd be a bit of a weird guy. But, great music is great music.

BludgeonySteve 09-01-2005 09:43 PM

Yeah, I don't really know why Jeff Beck didn't see more success. Obviously he had a lot, but not as much as either of the other famous yardbirds.

Glitterati 09-01-2005 09:47 PM

Crosby, Stills, and Nash are here tomorrow.

(the superman) 09-01-2005 10:15 PM
