I love the way JP uses themes and vocal melodies from Metropolis Pt 1 as guitar solos in Pt 2.
I love the way JP uses themes and vocal melodies from Metropolis Pt 1 as guitar solos in Pt 2.
Yeah, and a lot of the melodies on Pt. 2 recur over the album. It really helps the feel as an album.

shamed-angel 10-31-2005 05:29 PM

It really helps the feel as a concept album. I love the way the concept isn't just lyrical, but also musical. That must be one of the only concept albums to borrow themes from the music which is it's topic, along with story references. The greatest concept elbum ever... Fuck it. The greatest album ever.

Toaster 10-31-2005 05:34 PM

I like Awake better, myself. Pt. 2 is a bit too lightweight.

GenuineImitation 10-31-2005 05:37 PM
I like Awake better, myself. Pt. 2 is a bit too lightweight.
I like Awake better also. Pt.2 is amazing, but I really enjoy their heavier material much more.

shamed-angel 10-31-2005 05:38 PM

Part II had everything you could possibly want from a DT album... It's by far the album which showcases their talents the most.

Lord Abortion 10-31-2005 05:39 PM

I like SFOAM better than awake... I just can't get into awake at all except space dye vest, which is magnificent.

Toaster 10-31-2005 05:40 PM

I don't know, some of the songs sound too similar. It's intentional, and it's part of what makes the album great, but the fact that it doesn't have that many songs I want to skip to immediately makes it weaker in my mind. I've probably listened to it too much, though.

Does anyone know who drums for Petrucci on the G3 cd? I think it's Portnoy, but I can't be sure. I know he drums for the G3 jams.

I didn't know Portnoy drummed for G3. I would guess it would be him then.

Yeh it is Portnoy. I have to disagree with you there. I can't skip to a song on that album, as I have to listen through it.

Lord Abortion 10-31-2005 05:52 PM

Yeah, to really get SFOAM You have to listen two the whole thing, that's why I think the live versions of isolated tracks off there lose a little due to the lack of continuity.

My guitarist wanted me to know the words to master of puppets in case we ever look to be desperate to cover a song in case of onstage emergencies.
so I decided to break out the DT cover... if I have to learn it, at least I can listen to a good band play the song.

shamed-angel 10-31-2005 05:57 PM

A band who continue to make good albums...

But seriously, I'm sure that DT will always stay loyal to the music, after this long in their careers, it would be pointless, as they have gained so many fans doing what they do. But wouldn't another concept record be phenomenal?

Lord Abortion 10-31-2005 06:04 PM

Metallica stopped making good albums long before Majesty formed...

The last Metallica album of quality was in 1986, then about five or six songs since.

shamed-angel 10-31-2005 06:04 PM

Majesty formed in 1985...

Hence this tour being the 20th anniversary tour...

I wouldn't say Puppets was all that good anyway, about half good and half rubbish...

I lost, eh?

It's cool man. I know what you meant.

EDIT: Crap, I just noticed the time, I'd better be in bed. Gotta be in school in 9 hours.

Here in the UK its 25 to 1am.

And I've got to be up for a 9am lecture as well...

But first I just had to say... yes, SFAM is amazing, possibly my all-time favourite album (either that or I&W). I don't think I'll ever be amazed by an album quite as much as the first time I listened to SFAM from start to finish.

Mr.Guitarist 10-31-2005 06:42 PM

Yeah, i just got back onto these forums, and i have to say im absolutely amazed at the number of DT fans. I live in a small town, but even including the surrounding 5 towns, not more than a handfull of people know who they are! IT HURTS ME SO BAD.

Favorite album is either Scenes From a Memory or Train of Thought. SFAM, like has been said before, showcases their talents, and as shamed angel pointed out, i cant NOT listen through it from the beginning, its just that amazing. Train of Thought is up there cause....****, i dont even know why, im just drawn to it, its beautiful music, and Stream of Consciousness is one of my favorite songs in the whole world!!

Lord of Sword 10-31-2005 07:01 PM

can someone clear up exactly what all these '...in a livetime' cds/dvds are? i was going to get the twice in a livetime dvd for christmas, the only one on amazon.co.uk. but reading the forums at dt.net, i've found "5 years in a livetime" and "once in a livetime". i think the last one is just a cd, but what's the difference and what's on each one?

Yeah, everyone on these forums seems to like good music. It's hard to deny the talent of DT, anyway.

I bought Live At The Budokan today. The setlists sucks pretty bad, but Instrumedly alone was worth my $15.

Maynard's Dick 10-31-2005 09:23 PM

I've been wondering which DT disc to get next. I have Images and Words, Awake, and Live at Budokan.
any suggestions appreciated.

Deth 10-31-2005 09:27 PM

I would say Scenes From A Memory, it's my personal favorite.

Say, I'm wearing my SFAM shirt now :p.

Not sure about some of them though, like 20. Spocks Beard is NOT prog?

Lord Abortion 11-01-2005 08:33 AM

Do you think if I hit Petrucci with a stick a few times he'll agree to make DT play Space dye vest on the next tour?

Apocalyptic Raids 11-01-2005 08:42 AM

I have read an interview where they say they will never play it unless Kevin Moore is playing it with them.

Unless they changed their mind.

29. Get an Ibanez. This is not negotiable.
30. Spend 5 hours every day critiquing other musicians on forums.
31. Spend 5 minutes every other day actually practicing your instrument.

 Great stuff
