nah only one I ever spent any amount of time on was Contra 3 but after dying a thousand times it got to a point where I could finish it with my eyes closed on hard. that game was easy to memorise patterns for but this has far more projectiles being thrown around the screen you have to concentrate on
You should really check out Gunstar Heroes. It's made by some of the team that worked for Konami and made Contra. They made their own company called Treasure which developed games like Gunstar and Ikaruga.

The game is fairly hard but if you play it on Easy the first time it's pretty forgiving. It has awesome bosses that rotate and take up the whole screen, a bunch of interesting, diverse levels. The coolest part is that there are 4 types of weaponss and you can combine any two to make a total of 16 different weapons. You can also choose whether you want to be able to shoot in 4 directions while you move or if you want to shoot in all 8 directions but only while you're standing still.

Seriously get the ROM and give it a chance. It's a Genesis classic.

silhouette mirage kills gunstar imo

ps1/saturn classic, def in my top 5

EDIT: u guys need to play sum more obscure stuff

blockhead 06-16-2012 09:24 PM
I need to do a run through all the genesis exclusives I never played. only played the Sonic games, Toejam and Earl and Shining Force 2

or Mega Drive as it was known here in Australia lol
These are the exclusives I recommend:

Gunstar Heroes
Dynamite Headdy
Ristar (made by Sonic Team)
Columns
Alien Soldier

Juddybear 06-16-2012 09:25 PM

Juttin-kun I get the feeling you haven't played GH very thoroughly because if you had I think you would hold it in higher regard. Have you beaten it before or just played it a little bit? Tell the truth bro.

And you know I've played plenty of obscure shit bro.

Haz 06-16-2012 09:28 PM

cheers

yeah I was playing Ikaruga a while back its awesome. had it on the highest difficulty setting and couldn't get past the third stage

Juddybear 06-16-2012 09:29 PM

i've played it a little bit millions of times, never beat it, have only watched other people beat it

silhouette mirage is seriously better in ever aspect, it evolved the gameplay and whatnot of gunstar in every regard, controls, graphics, story, weapons, levels etc, it's amazing you guys should play it and i think you'd agree with me

EDIT: hardest shooter ever is pulstar on neo geo, game is infuriatingly hard

I don't think you can judge that game accurately if you've never beat it. Every level is different and it's not really fair to judge it without completing it.

I'll try Silhouette Mirage if you complete Gunstar Heroes. You're missing out bro.

Juddybear 06-16-2012 09:39 PM

before anything you really should play lunar the silver star story, bro

that is an amazing fuckin' game

I have it for Dreamcast and the farthest I've ever got was the fourth stage.

I will admit I'm not very good at vertical space ship shooters. I'm out of my element when I play them. I'm an expert at 2d fighters and platformers though. I'm pretty good at Metroidvania and JRPGs too.
before anything you really should play lunar the silver star story, bro

I plan to play that but I have to be in the mood to start a lengthy JRPG and I'm not in that mood currently. It will be the first on my list when I'm ready to start a new one though.

Right now I'm more into fast paced 2d games like fighters, platformers and shooters. I've really been in a Mega Man mood lately.

Juddybear 06-16-2012 09:43 PM

you need to start with easier shooters first, since you have a dreamcast you should get giga wing 1 or 2, i'm more or less an "expert" at 2d shooters and ikaruga is brutally hard, it's def one of the hardest shooters ever

blockhead 06-16-2012 09:45 PM

I have Lifeforce for NES which I've been meaning to play. What are some good ones on our beloved AES emulator?

beans 06-16-2012 09:51 PM
Get this bro: http://neoragex.en.malavida.com/

It has 150 or more NEO GEO games that come with and you can use any usb controller. All the metal slug and KOF games are on there.

Absolutely man. I will always help any one when it comes to videogame recommendations or help emulating. I don't play many 3d games but I have a vast knowledge of 2d stuff.

blazing star (one of the best shooters ever)
pulstar (also one of the best despite the ridic difficulty)
shock troopers 1&2 (a lot like ikari warriors but a million times better)
sonic wings 2&3 (relatively easy and vv fun shooters)
strikers 1945 plus (great game despite the crippling slowdown)

Try torrenting it from the pirate bay then. That's how I did it and I had no problems at all. It should come up with a blue screen with SNK characters and a list of games on the left.

Also try to just open the actual emulator and select the games from there and see if that will work. If the torrent version won't work let me know.

Thanks for the help bro I'll check some of these out after I beat Rockman 3. Which one would you recommend i start with?

Juddybear 06-16-2012 10:08 PM

try sonic wings 3 first, it's easy and plays really well, if you're feeling cocky try blazing star, it starts out easy enough lol

I know that supposed to be an insult but I'll take it. I love old school Japanese 2d games.

What are you guys favorite NES games?
