I tried to learn Time on guitar once. Its not the most difficult thing to play apart from the timing. To play those notes at the start would take a ridiculous amount of precision.

My favorites are Any Colour You Like and Eclipse. I think Eclipse would be just as good without Brain Damage.

It dunno, it wouldn't be as good without Brain Damage setting the mood first.

Eclipse works by itself, but its not nearly as good without the other two.
If nothing else, you at least need Brain Damage/Eclipse. |
Eclipse is the pay-off. I like it when it builds up through the other songs - it's just that little more epic :)

The band says it was just a coincidence. But I've heard somewhere that whenever the interviewer asks them about it, Roger says nothing. And seeing as he wrote most of the album...
It seems like it would be a pretty amazing coincidence if thats really all it is, because some of those parts are pretty spot on. |

It's such a perfect match when the movie is in black and white. The CD gives that whole part so much feeling that it doesnt have when its just the movie by itself.
I might have to watch it tomorrow, now. |
1) The vinyl doesn't match up nearly as well as the CD - CDs not having been invented in the Seventies, this was either amazing foresight by the band or a simple coincidence
2) The band had a hard enough time writing real soundtracks for short films. The soundtracks for More, Obscured by Clouds and Zabrinski Point were written by Floyd. There were no VCRs back then; the band had to go into a theatre, time a section of the film with a stop watch and then go back to the studio and try and edit it down/up/whatever. Whilst this would be ok with some of the shorter films they did, with full official involvement of the director and all that, it would have been near impossible without. 3)Roger Waters did not have control over the lengths of the songs. The songs for The Dark Side of the Moon were developed during tours in 1972. The tempos were very different during those tours. In particular, "Time" was played much slower. "On the Run" was a guitar jam, bearing no resemblance to what appeared on the album. (In fact, David Gilmour has stated that "On the Run" was written at the very last minute, improvised in the studio.) These early performances of Dark Side do not match the film. 4) Many of the songs came from unstructured jams whilst on tour and many of the instrumental passages were written by Gilmour. To suggest that Waters secretly cut down Gilmours involvement and work simply to make it match up with the film borders on ridiculous. Similarly, The Great Gig In The Sky, which matches up so well, was written almost entirely by Wright, without much involvement from the other members until the final recording. There's more points as well, but those are some of the main ones. I don't think its anything more than a coincidenece, albeit a fun coincidence. |
I havn't tried it, but from what I hear it's basically just timing anyway nothing else really fits.

It probably is a coincidence, its just incredible that it matches up so well.
And actually, I think I heard that side 1 on the album ends and side 2 begins at exactly the moment Dorthy walks into Oz and it turns to color. I dont have the vinyl though, so I dont know if thats true of not. And ya it's mostly timing, but there are some other parts where the lyrics narrate the film for a bit. |
I saw it synched up with money. I thought it was pretty cool, but definitely a coincidence. I saw the 2001: A space oddysey synch-up with echoes though and it's really cool.

Okay I finally got round to visiting the record shop I go to and Ummagumma has been sold:( However I did find The Final Cut, its in good condition except for one mark that could be annoying but it doesnt skip. I havn't listened to it yet but I thought it may interest you floyd fans:thumb:

:lol: You know, I don't really know who played! I used to, but I'll have to look it up now. If your interested, the biography by Nicholas Schaffner is a great read about Floyd. I learned a lot about just about everything that was going on in the band.

I'm pretty sure Michael Kamen played keys for The Final Cut. He's practically Rick's unofficial replacement for the record. And I [i]love[/i] the album. It's probably my favourite.

The only problem that I find with The Final Cut is that to me most of the songs sound the same. Now of course, I don't mean [B]exactly[/B] the same, but they just seem to have that sound about them.
In conclusion, it's not Pink Floyd's greatest record they put out, but it's enjoyable. |
