I'm supposed to be the only one who likes Dred Scott here.
Count Bass D - Begborrowsteel

Touted a jack of all trades, Count Bass D has garnered respect by composing all his lyrics, playing an assortment of instruments, and releasing album after album of superior sampling. Count ounce again forgoes filler on Begborrowsteel’s 15 tracks, blending live instrumentals with film dialogue, to create yet another musical masterpiece.

KMD - Black Bastards

Black Bastards was voted in Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists as the most notable rap album of all time that was never released commercially, and with good reason. The fact that this excellent album, slated for a 1994 release, has not seen the light of day until 2001 testifies to a time when shortsighted industry backlashes against records that inflamed Middle America were in vogue. Elektra Records higher-ups canned the project due to its controversial cover art, which shows a Sambo figure being lynched. Finally available, this must-purchase concept album is worth the wait. From the jazzy, hypnotic samples on the title cut to "Sweet Premium Wine," a farcical ode to swigging 40-ounce bottles of brew (remember when drinking St. Ides and Old English was trendy?), you know you've found rap heaven. Classic headbanger "What a Niggy Know?" (and the remix featuring partner-in-rhyme MF Grimm) is equally off the chain. "Constipated Monkey" and weed anthem "Suspended Animation" are testaments to a time in rap music when experimental beats and obscure sampling ruled the roost. Black Bastards is where Brand Nubian meets De La Soul at the local bodega, heads wear Muslim kufis for kicks, and "word to the mutha'" actually refers to themes of pan-Africanism, repatriation, and reparations.

Dred Scott - Breakin' Combs

His music blends jazz, funk, and hip-hop, along with social consciousness and a sense of humor. His debut album, Breakin' Combs, was released in 1994.

How come everyone hates Kanye? Sure he's an egotistical asshole, but who the hell isn't in the Rap industry? I really like most of the work I've heard from him and he's a phenomenal producer. He's changing Rap and I definitely think it's for the better.

He's been changing his style a lot lately to sound less original and to mimic Primo and Dilla more. He doesn't do their sound as good as them, so it's kind of obnoxious to hear. Plus, he's a god awful MC. He's had some great beats through the years, I wish he'd go back in the background and just do that again.

Plus, some people care about the person behind the music.

American Gangster reminded me how awesome this song was. Kanye at his best.

A lot of people don't like Kanye because of how poppy he is. At least that's my opinion.

Apocalyptic Raids 08-22-2007 11:30 PM

The stuff I've heard from Kanye recently has been pretty average, especially that new one that samples Daft Punk. His work on The Blueprint was great though.

Tyler 08-22-2007 11:33 PM

He ruined a Daft Punk song, that's reason enough to hate him.

The new Aesop Rock album is pretty good I guess. It's as flat as his past stuff but he's still really strong lyrically. He should ghost-write or something.

The album is ok, but that song is just phenomenal. It seriously blows my mind every time i hear it, the horn sample in the chorus is just amazing.

Kanye is pretty average, that Daft Punk remix is horrible. All of his rapping is horrible really.

That album is pretty much amazing IMO but his lastest one, worst thing I've heard all year.
A lot of people don't like Kanye because of how poppy he is. At least that's my opinion.
I don't think it's that, although that kind of thought is prevalent among stuck-up backpackers. Most folks, I'd reckon, take the fact that he's a pop artist as a given, as much as they would approach Pharrell or Timbaland in the same way. Like those guys, the key difference between Kanye and the typical hip hop producer is that he has wider appeal than the typical pop artist. Some elements of the underground embrace him, some don't.

Mostly, any Kanye backlash can probably be attributed to the fact that the shelf-life of any given producer is extremely limited. Critics and fans alike enjoy latching onto a producer and essentially sucking him dry. And despite the enormity of possibilities offered by hip hop as an artistic medium, it's hard for most producers to adapt and evolve. There are only a handful who have been able to adapt and grow as artists over the course of the genre's existence.

Honestly, I think it's too early to say whether or not Kanye can or will. I like his stuff, he's still doing interesting things and he can still turn out a good pop song. I've never been a fan of him as a rapper, but still, he's got charisma. Even if he is an *** half the time.

Robert Crumb 08-26-2007 02:21 PM

No way, man.

Glitterati 08-26-2007 02:56 PM
