Although I'm afraid to say this, I don't know why everybody hates Phil Spector with his work on Let It Be. I don't think it's half bad. People just think that it's horrible because the Beatles didn't like it that much.

I don't get it either. I've said how much I love Let it Be a bunch of times, and I don't mind it. It works with Across the Universe. I haven't heard ...Naked yet though, so I can't judge.
If you don't own anything, I'd buy 1 first. So what if it's a ****ty collection, it will get you into the band and gives you a good overview of their early years especially. The first studio album I would buy would be Rubber Soul, as it was the first Beatles album I got, and is a masterpiece. Simply brilliant. After that, I would go this route Revolver> Sgt. Peppers> Magical Mystery Tour> The White Album> Abbey Road> Let it Be. If you like those go back to early stuff or solo careers.
Rubber Soul is a terrific album... what makes it even more legendary is it was written/recorded in under 2 mere weeks! I'd reccommend starting with Hard Days Night though, really sums up their early years and nearly every track is good... if you don't mind their pop side. After that I'd move on to Help! cuz its just **** great... and sorta sets the mood for Rubber Soul.

Once you get into Revolver, move on to an album called "Pet Sounds". Its by the Beach Boys, and really sets up the mood for Sgt. Pepper. Its actually what inspired Beatles to write the whole Pepper concept. Anyway, whatever you do be sure to have Revolver and Peppers in your collection. You'll be a better person for listening to em.

< -- Cried & laughed out of sheer joy when I first heard the song "Help!" back in the day. Pretty much throughout the rest of the album.

robo2448 06-04-2005 07:41 PM

Rubber Soul and Revolver inspired Pet Sounds though :p Cool how those things work. And I believe that Rubber Soul was the first time the Beatles changed. They started experimenting with sounds and writing meaningful lyrics. It's a nice bridge between Help and Revolver.

Guys, do you know who won the 1971 Grammy for Album of the Year?

Concert for Bangladesh by George Harrison.

Another one for Harrison.

Also, Led Zeppelin's infamous Stairway to Heaven was partly written as a response to a Harrison remark saying that they don't make nearly enough rock ballads. Jimmy Page even put some of the chord progression of Something at the end of Stairway.

Harrison pushes rock forward... unintentionally!

And for the guy who wants to get into the Beatles, go with Revolver, then you can go anywhere else with that. It's just precisely in the middle. It still had some great songs that reflect their earlier days as well as the sign of progressiveness and weird chorsd that will be all around their later stuff.

Well Beach Boy's Today! and Summer Days inspired the whole Rubber Soul / Revolver movement what with the more complex arrangements as opposed to their earlier pop songs  . And yeah I really like the lyrical leap in Rubber Soul, its got a bit of Dylan and Byrds with the Beatles magic.

What are your views on the Byrds? Some argue the Byrds are better than the Beatles. I don't agree, however, those who wish to argue, I'll give the reasons why.

Kilisab 06-05-2005 09:38 AM

<-- Has not heard too much Byrds, but from what I've heard its quite good. Not as good as Beatles, but have own distinct style.

They have their own distinct style. And you can't say they aren't as good as the Beatles, if you've never heard them. Some say they aren't as versatile.

Some say the Beatles copy the Byrds.

That George....one of the coolest men to ever live. Ever. Awesome musician, one of my favorites.

I just started reading The Beatles Anthology the other day....for about the eighth time. I could never get bored of it.

They did... Beatles copied everyone, so they got away with it :p

I have started to read it many times, but I have not yet finished it

robo2448 06-05-2005 04:24 PM

Same here, I just skip around, it's too long to read all the way through.

freestyle1k86 06-05-2005 09:42 PM

How much does the book cost? Roughly

I never knew that was a book I've only seen the Dvd. I'm not too big on reading, it usually takes me 6 or more months to read a book, and by then I forgot what half the book was about.

MalcolmYoungRock 06-05-2005 09:46 PM

I saw a paperback at Borders for 20$ and the hardback was like 60$!

I've never understood why two pieces of cardboard cost $40.
I've never understood why two pieces of cardboard cost $40.
Yeah, me neither. Maybe because it's more support.

DeusExMachina 06-06-2005 11:23 AM

Because people are fools, and are willing to pay lots of money for hardcover.

It's a complete read through of EVERY Beatles song ever commited to vynil.
Pretty cool eh? I haven't managed to churn through it just yet, I'll have a look later though.

me too, got it as a Christmas present the year it came out. Never seen a paper back version, that must be really long, because the hard cover pages are really big too.
