i like the allman bro's especially in Derek and the Dominoes but i would consider them more bluesy than classic rock
... Um, classic rock is more an era than an actual genre, there are bands from every genre of rock that can be classified as classic rock because of the time which they were around. For example, Pink Floyd and Yes (Prog. rock) are classic rock, the Allmans and Cream (blues rock) are also classic rock. Bob Dylan is folk rock is he not classic rock either? I hope I explained that well. |

I haven't listened to it fully yet, ask Badmoon about it.
|
There are a lot of bands touring right now: Allman Brothers, Paul McCartney come to mind, but you're going to have to be fast and know when tickets are released.
Pray tell. :)
Basically, Tom Scholz was the biggest nerd all through college. He maintained a 4.8 GPA on a 5.0 scale. He wasn't involved with music at all. Then he decided he wanted to join a band, so he starting playing guitar with a group of guys he knew. He set up a studio in his basement, which he recorded Boston's debut album in. All of the songs were created by him, just with the help of a friend with vocal harmonies. The drums, guitar, bass, singing, etc were all him. The album was incredible, and the band got signed. But there was no band! So he had to find musicians to join him. The album in now the greatest selling debut of all time. |
You guys would really take '68 over the Summer of Love? I won't even begin starting naming all the great happenings of that year.
Oh my, I just found out Ibrahim Ferrer died, (Aug 6th, I'm really slow on recieving news). He was the singer for the Beuna Vista Social Club which was a **** good CD/band.
I was just listining to them too. That sucks at least they got to release this masterpeice before they had to go. :( |
I also hear that they put all of their best songs onto that album, and didn't have much else to work with for following albums. Same as with The Cars. Boston band curse, some say
EDIT: The Grateful Dead- Europe '72 Disc 2 hxxp://s53.yousendit.com/d.php?id=1SIL5M0UDQM80RNWCWVW56VK8 |
'67 is my favorite year, followed by '69, then '68.
|
other examples would be if you took newer bands that have the basic sounds of classic rock such as jet,the black crowes and velvet revolver and consider them classic rock well no1 does. jet is considered a rip off of basically every band of the classic rock era, the black crowes have a very classic rock style but are considered somewhat of a groovy jam band style and the band focuses alot more on melody and harmony then most bands of the era. velvet revolver is a tough one but id say there just plain hard rock or more so classic rock with a more modern heavier twist to it.

I've got two of his solo albums, he works with Ry Cooder still though they are pretty good. |
Yeah, but then you would have to live through the 80's/90's and all of the synthesizers/powerballads/overdubbing/boybands that ensue
Still...
Unfortunately. But it would be worth it to see the old good stuff. That reminds me, next week the Backstreet Boys are in Vancouver for a concert   |
So on Boston's debut that's one guy doing everything? :amaze:
I know, it's insane. The funny thing is he sings about partying and scoring chicks, when in reality he hardly ever went out and did anything like that  |
There are a lot of bands touring right now: Allman Brothers, Paul McCartney come to mind, but you're going to have to be fast and know when tickets are released.
I'm hoping I can see Neil when on his new tour. |
I refuse to shell out 60 bucks for one show. It's not right.

Didn't Jerry Garcia play his first solo album all by himself? (except drums) |
I paid €105 to see Paul McCartney, which is roughly US$130.
Holy poo, hope its a good concert for your sake. I'm sure it will be though. I'm missing a Pearl Jam concert while we are on the subject of concerts... it started an hour ago :upset: |

When is that going to be? Jacaranda: That sucks; Did you have tickets? |

I wouldn't know. He could've  Marquee Moon (the song) is very, very cool. |

Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home
It doesn't work. What do you think's wrong with it? I think I payed 100$ for McCartney and I'm going to pay 25$ for Robert Randolph and Santana. |
That's quite the concert budget you have there :). For $25 i'd go see Santana.
|
It doesn't work.
What do you think's wrong with it? I think I payed 100$ for McCartney and I'm going to pay 25$ for Robert Randolph and Santana.
Where are you seeing the latter at. THat sounds like a real fantastic show :amaze: Great price too. I haven't heard much of either but the Family Band just seems irresestable to me. Santana has had some real cool songs and his guitar playing alone would pretty much make the trip worth it in my opinion. Phenominal guitarists are always great live. I have Stevie Ray Vaughns live at the El Mocambo on DVD and it is simply mind blowing. His version of 3rd Stone From the Sun is spectacular, but there isn't a bad song IMO. Texas Flood is, of course, great. |
What other Dead albums does this one compare to? Is it like a country rock one?
No, it isn't a Country Rock album. If anything, you can pretty much call it a Progressive album with a general concept of faith/myth/religion. At first, you will most likely not really dig the album, nor did I until I noticed the great tracks. Estimated Prophet - Some are really into this tune; it's occasionally on G. Dead compilations. I like it, but am not a huge fan. Dancin' in the Streets - Piece of crap, and throughs the whole album off. Samson & Delilah - A wonderful traditional song based on the Biblical story of Samson and his scandalis Phillistine women Delilah. They got the idea to cover it from Rev. Gary Davis who did a fantastic version of it back in the day. I also love the solo and production. Great tune. Terrapin Station - I'm sure you need no introduction or review of this song; it's fantastic. Extra Track: Catfish John - One of my favorite Dead tunes, let alone my favorite Reggae Dead tune that never made it on to an album. However, Garcia did cover it on his album Reflections, but did it much worse and slow paced. The Grateful Dead/Captain Beefheart mix I made a couple months ago was based upon this tune. I also wanted to form a band playing a Country-Reggae sound similar to this tune when I first heard it. Now I'm sure you didn't want/expect a breakdown like that, but it gets ideas and opinions out, so whatever.
Didn't Jerry Garcia play his first solo album all by himself? I got Go To Heaven on vinyl at a garage sale for 25 cents yesterday :)

The only song I didn't really like was Sunrise, and I think I liked Estimated Prophet the best. /not counting Terrapin Station because I'm still not finished with it EDIT: Not really sure where else I can ask without getting flamed. Time for an avatar switch, should I go Jeff Beck - Wired, Taxi Driver, Fight Club, Robbie Robertson, Jim Morrison (red or shirtless), Buddy Guy, or David Gilmour? The descision is in your hands! |
PICK JEFF BECK!!!!!!!!!
Yea, I can't wait to see them. :D Really great guitarist live are the best. I can't stop listining to this Jeff Beck bootleg! It's AMAZING!!! If you haven't heard much Jeff Beck and are not familer with him you should REALLY check this out!!! |

We should have that listening party thing soon.
It's gotta be Wilco and Billy Bragg's Ocean Avenue. You guys would really like that album. |
It's gotta be Wilco and Billy Bragg's Ocean Avenue. You guys would really like that album.
You know I had the chance to take that exact album from my dad's but decided not to because I didn't know who Billy Bragg was. I'll steal it next time. :)
I say we vote on the listening party but Badmoon's suggestion might be good. |

Listening Party Suggestions

Perhaps we could take turns showcasing albums
Splat Out Plath- Congradualtions on being this thread's only known Brit :thumb: EDIT- I wouldn't mind hearing Wilco, as my Bio and AP English teachers are always staying out late to see their concerts, and raving about how incredibly good they are |

Hey fellow rockers, I'm kinda new to this thread (i.e. have posted in it like twice)
I like a lot of the more "mainstream" classic rock bands, but I'd like to hear some other ones that aren't as popular. I saw sometime on this thread a band called The Crimson King, I'll check them out. Any other suggestions? EDIT: magicbus changed his avatar while I was posting :amaze: I must be blessed or something to witness such an event :D |
when is the listening party?
|
They're actually called King Crimson. Their masterpiece album is called In the Court of the Crimson King, check it out.
