They were pretty good live at Bang Your Head last year. Nice guys too. :)

MetalOz 01-24-2006 07:11 AM

Are we allowed to send out samplers? I have every Jag Panzer album. I also met them at a show and got to hang out with them a bit. Very cool. I also have a few Steel Prophet discs, their cover of Accept's Fast as a Shark is the best...

Not that this has anything to do with power metal, but considering your from a well established band, what are your thoughts on music downloading?

Lord Tim 01-24-2006 09:20 AM

OK, that's a tough one.

There's 2 schools of thought on this one.

The first school being that without downloading and MP3 trading, a lot of people here on this board never would have even heard about Dungeon or LORD at all. In a way, it's sort of like borrowing an album from someone to check a band out or getting a copy to listen to for a while. If someone really likes it, they become a fan and will end up buying your other stuff and your merch and going to gigs, etc. etc. So in that way, it's a good thing.

The flip side of that is that some people who download your stuff may never buy your albums in the end. Whether it's because they intended to and never got around to doing it or never had any intention of doing it (hey, they have the album already - why would they bother going and buying it?), the outcome is the same. Essentially, it's taking money from my pocket that would have gone towards my hard work and money I spent making the music in the first place.

People could argue that downloading doesn't really hurt an artist but it does in a few ways. A good example is that our recording budget was SEVERELY cut during the last 2 albums from our label. The reason being that they were losing money due to sales being down because of downloading.

This affected us in a few ways.

First of all, it made it DAMN hard to put out a world-class product with half of our budget gone (we managed - JUST.)

Next, the label isn't making as much money anymore so their recording and promotional budgets are cut, which not only makes it hard for the artist to record but because their promotion isn't as good, less people know about the band than they otherwise would if there was more promo, therefore less sales.

Next, because people are downloading our albums rather than buying them and then you couple that with the fact that we're not being promoted as much from our label 'cos they don't have the funds to do it, our sales are down, which means less royalties.

When you're a relatively new band in the global scene, if your label sees that your sales are low, they're less keen to inject money into you when they could be pushing their more established bands who are riding out the downloading a bit better than the new kids on the block.

So yeah, as you can see, downloading overall is giving us a huge butt-reaming. There's positives to it and I'll be the first to say I'm all for people trading MP3s of my music to give someone an idea of what we do, or even trading whole albums if the other person is likely to be a person who will go out and buy the product or support the band in a big way in some fashion, but sadly, that's more the exception than the rule.

Shattered_Future 01-24-2006 10:05 AM

See, my theory on downloading is basically, if you want to hear the band, one or two downloaded songs won't hurt. It gives the listener a chance to hear the band, and may or may not entice them to buy the album.

Downloading whole albums I think is a bad idea, even though I do it. :(

I kind of have to do it...the cd stores suck around here, I don't have a job, and I don't have a credit card where I can order this crap from online stores. For now, I'm stuck with downloading albums.

Steerpike 01-24-2006 10:14 AM

I do agree that downloading has its ups and downs to be sure.

Personally, I don't approve of people who download whole albums with no intention of ever buying the real thing. If I like what I hear, I promise myself to buy the albums. If I really like the albums, I start buying up the T-shirts and posters as well to chip in a little extra support.

As great as filesharing may be for the sake of exposure, it often turns into another case of "too much of a good thing."

Deth 01-24-2006 11:23 AM

I have to say though, I wouldn't have heard of many of the bands I listen to now if not for downloading, and I now own many of their albums.

Lord Abortion 01-24-2006 11:57 AM

I'm one of the people who will go out and buy an Album after downloading if I like it. I would only be sent it from people on here, because I don't use P2P programs.
in a side note. I got

Falconer- Chapters from a veil folorn
Dragonforce-Inhuman Rampage
LORD-A personal Journey

i'm trying not to borrow too many cds now, i want to buy the ones i don't have genuine copies of. only 180 or so to go.

i got them for a good price off amazon.co.uk, but i obviously you'll have to use amazon.com, i don't know what their prices are like. they should stock it though.

Yeah thats how I got into DF too.

So I think I'm going to ProgPower UK, mainly for Therion, and to a slightly lesser extend Freedom Call and Pagan's Mind. Line up looks pretty good, anyone else going?

I think it has something to do with the arrangement being shortened/altered.

You have that album. (unless you're secretly female, then she would be right) and My Girlfriend likes the album.

I am not a regular in this thread, actually I have never posted in here but I figured as I am listening to more power metal, Dragon Force, Blind Guardian, Helloween I figured I would start some discussion. And I just picked up a special edition Demons and Wizards "Touched by the Crimson King" on vinyl, it was a pic disc.

The first track is my favorite, some cool vocal stuff going on there.

Tyler 01-24-2006 03:16 PM

I really can't get into Demons and Wizards. They're just one of those bands, I guess. Maybe it just isnt cheesy enough, I like my PM as cheesy as can be.

The cheese was my main attraction to Immortal. Have you seen their video? I posted this in the BM thread, but since you mentioned them...why not...

To me both them and Iced Earth are the most mediocre Power Metal there is. I think it is just becuase my personal taste doesn't really appeal to Thrash, I know a lot of other people here like them tho, and they are definately good, I just like most other Power Metal bands better.

That's probably the exact same thing I'm thinking. Yes. Yes, it is in fact.

Shattered_Future 01-24-2006 04:30 PM

Technically not the first post, but man, that looks like a sweet lineup. Stupid Englishmen.

Iced Earth = Good.
Blind Guardian = Good.
Demons And Wizards = Meh.

Hansi's voice is excellent, like always, but the music bores the crap out of me. There's more to music than Eb triplets and fingerpicked clean parts.

Tyler 01-24-2006 04:56 PM

I'm listening to Jag Panzer. I like it.

Apocalyptic Raids 01-24-2006 08:23 PM

Anybody who hasn't seen the video for Immortal's The Call Of The Wintermoon has not truly lived.

One thing though, galloping isnt triplets...You probably know that but just used the word triplet like many others do. Just wanted to point it out.

Deconstruction 01-24-2006 08:30 PM

But you can have galloping triplets!
And how can anyone think D&W are meh?? Probably one of my favorite power metal bands...But then again I am not a huge power metal fan... :(

Deth 01-24-2006 08:33 PM

I really like D&W. The debut is the superior album and Fiddler On The Green is one of my favorite songs ever.

I cant see how triplets can give a galloping effect...How ? Sorry, im just not understanding :p

And Demons and Wizard are definatly not meh for me.
See: The Trooper by Maiden
Ah okay. I opened the powertab. The place with 16th triplets and then the eigth note, right ? It makes sense. Not the galloping i had in mind though but yeah that does it.

Deth 01-24-2006 08:53 PM

yeah, it's not straight, but it's certainly galloping.
