No Life 'Til Leather is so superior to Kill 'em All

Mustaine wrote MOST of the lead work for Kill 'em All.
Hammett did some of his own too (It's fairly easy to tell which solos are Hammetts from Kill 'em All...)

But Mustaine did help with a lot of riffs from Ride The Lightning (I have a demo of Ride The Lightning, not sure if Mustaine's on Lead though), and possibly Leper Messiah from Master (I say yes, most people say no, whatever).

No life 'til leather..whats that?

ThrashMaster27 11-26-2005 03:27 AM
No life 'til leather..whats that?
A Demo that they released in 1982. It's a very similar tracklisting to Kill 'Em All, barring a few songs.

Also had Dave Mustaine on lead and Ron McGovney on Bass.

Mother 11-26-2005 03:32 AM

Cool..know where i can find some tracks?, or better yet uploads.

I think that's the site.

Sorry to be a bit off topic but just at the start of Holier Than Thou, Is that Jason using Distortion/Wah? I thought to my self it could be since when ever I play with my my band I always play that part. But then I also thought it sounds similiar to a Talkbox but I don't believe Kirk uses one. Any thoughts guys?

According to the guitar book it's a talbox wah thing used by Kirk.

The_Riddler 11-26-2005 07:00 AM

I was wondering, there have been hundreds upon hundreds of Metallica covers, from the "Blackest" album industrial remixes, to the the rap and whatnot covers of Metallica.

What are some of the most horrible covers of Metallica songs that you have heard? If I could remember all the ones I want to, I would try to write as many as I could down here, but I am far to tired to even think about doing that. Just wondering your thoughts though.

Jev 11-26-2005 07:09 AM

Some of the techno ones are bad and some of the Punk Covers are just terrible.

.:Thrasher:. 11-26-2005 07:36 AM
Some of the techno ones are bad and some of the Punk Covers are just terrible.
Whoever remixes techno with Metallica or any kind of rock has to be retarded.
Punk cannot sing metal. They SUCK at it.

/pull's out knife

Jev 11-26-2005 08:07 AM

But equally you could say that metal singers can't sing punk.

Chu 11-26-2005 08:16 AM

Happy, you have awesome taste in music (imo) :thumb:

Give me a top 10 of essential metal albums, I'd like to expand my listening, and if you list something I don't listen to.. Music++; :D

Joe 11-26-2005 08:40 AM
tLook inside the CD booklet, Mustaine is given credit for most of it. Hammet is credited with none. Mustaine wrote it, Hammett performed it on KEA.
I'm aware of that. He also wrote parts of RTL and Call of the Ktulu, what's your point? He was still kicked out prior to recording sessions. Hammett did ALL of the KEA stuff, but used several of Mustaine's solos. Some are Hammett's though.
Give me a top 10 of essential metal albums, I'd like to expand my listening, and if you list something I don't listen to.. Music++;
I'll work on it. There's obviously Master of Puppets, Reign in Blood, RIP, and a few others. I'll add more later (I'd add RTL and KEA but there's more essential stuff then that).

Maybe Iron Maiden, Powerslave, or Killers by Iron Maiden. Probably Paranoidd by Black Sabbath, Blizzard of Oz by Ozzy Osbourne

So let's see (not in any order)

Paranoidd - Black Sabbath
Blizzard of Oz - Ozzy Osbourne
Master of Puppets - Metallica
Reign in Blood - Slayer
Rust in Peace - Megadeth
Powerslave - Iron Maiden

4 more?

I'll try and give you less obvious ones like MOP

1) Cacophony - Speed Metal Symphony

If you don't like guitar music, you may not like this one

2) Dragonforce - Valley of the Damned

great metal band, one of the best I've heard

3) In Flames - Clayman

IMO their best album but I like every song they've done

4) Megadeth - RIP

yeah, you probably already have this but anyone that doesn't needs it

5) Dream Theater - Images and Words

again, you may have it. This is my favourite DT album. You may not like the singing but the music is great

6) Iced Earth - Alive In Athens

okay it's a live album, the quality of the music may not be as great as on studio albums but I got this cheap and I think this shows a pretty good range of their songs, if you like this you'll like their albums. Plus it's 3 discs

7) Slayer - RIB/Seasons in The Abyss

I put these two together because I think they're Slayer's best albums. You may have them but if you don't, get them

8) Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder

It may not be their best but I like it

9) Liquid Tension Experiment - S/T

It's a side project of DT yes but I think they are musically better than DT.

10) Dream Theater - When Dream and Day Unite

Okay, in this album the singing may not be that great and it doesn't have the DT sound but still I think this album is underrated. The music on this album is awesome. And I like the singing.

Thanks for the comment of my taste in music. Whenever I get asked to give lists my mind goes blank so I've probably left out quite a bit.

Chu 11-26-2005 09:36 AM

1) Cacophony - Speed Metal Symphony - Yeah ****en sweet album mate, Becker is a God (And the obvious Marty Friedman too)
2) Dragonforce - Valley of the Damned - This is what I meant! I've heard of Dragon Force, never heard any of their stuff, I will definately check this out :thumb:
3) In Flames - Clayman - I like Clayman, I haven't heard any of their other stuff, and to be honest, I find them a bit boring sometimes, they have some cool songs, but I dunno, I don't listen to them much.
4) Megadeth - Rust In Peace - Yeah! This is a classic, great band too
5) Dream Theater - Images and Words - Hell yeah! This is my fav Dream Theater album, riffalicious.
6) Iced Earth - Alive In Athens - Very cool, I've heard the current Megadeth bassist used to play for Iced Earth, otherwise I haven't heard a lot about them, I will check this CD out too :thumb:
7) Slayer - RIB/Seasons in The Abyss - I find Slayer songs to get boring fast, although I have their discography and sometimes pull out Reign in Blood, I don't listen to them much either, unless I want to hear some fast guitar....
8) Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder - I don't really like CoB, I have one of their albums, and a couple of random songs, and I've never really got into them much..
9) Liquid Tension Experiment - S/T - Yeah! I only have S/T, I wonder if 2 is any good?
10) Dream Theater - When Dream and Day Unite - One of the Dream Theater albums I've been meaning to check out, cheers, I will definately be looking for this now!

Everyone should add a 10 Essential Metal albums list, it could get cool...

Aw3someman 11-26-2005 10:20 AM

An essential Metal list should probably have Metallica. Their old stuff was probably some of the best thrash metal ever. Your missing the point this stuff must be essential and there's no truly essential metal list without early metallica

I agree with you except for these, i think you are leaving genres out.
It's hard not to consider Speed Metal Symphony an essential metal album, but sometimes the album get lost in the awesome shredding, RIP is enough for Marty Friedman.
The In flames album, Clayman is good, even it's the best at his sub genre, but i wouldn't call it a metal essential.
Hatebreeder, nah, i like COB but there's like a thousand Power Metal albums better than this.
Also two Dream Theater albums?, don't get me wrong, but all the Dream Theater albums are 60-40 metal. Images and Words seems like a better option.

My top ten have RIP, RIB, IaW,LTE(s/t),RTL and:

Meshuggah: Destroy, Erase, Improve
Napalm Death: Scum
Mercyful Fate: Melissa
Opeth: Blackwater park
AIC: Facelift

ThrashMaster27 11-26-2005 01:25 PM

Depends what you mean by essential metal albums. If it includes all genres, then I'd be hard pressed coming up with a list. It'd probably go something like...

Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Venom - Welcome To Hell
Judas Priest - Stained Class
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
Kreator - Coma of Souls
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Slayer - Show No Mercy
Motörhead - Bomber
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales

Wow, 3 proto-black metal albums. I don't even listen to Black Metal.

Jason Becker > Marty Friedman.
Marty's great, godlike even, but Becker's just.. Perfection...

Edit:
By the way, if anyone cares, this is my top 10:
1. Ride The Lightning/Master of Puppets - Metallica (Either or both, doesn't really matter)
2. Rust in Peace - Megadeth
3. Reign in Blood - Slayer
4. Cowboys From Hell - Pantera
5. Blackwater Park - Opeth
6. Images and Words - Dream Theater
7. The Number of The Beast - Iron Maiden
8. Paranoidd - Black Sabbath
9. Abortion Clinic - Rake Sodomy/Echo Inside
10. Individual Thought Patterns - Death

Can prolly tell my favourite metal

Kyle 11-26-2005 02:07 PM

My list probably won't be as helpful because I don't really like THAT much metal, mainly just the mainstream stuff....

Metallica - Ride the Lightening - awesome album..blah blah
Ozzy - Blizzard of Ozz - this is all about Randy Rhoads, so many great tracks
Black Label Society - 1919 Eternal I was tempted to go with Sonic Brew, but I prefer the heavier riffs from this album
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power Another Classic album from start to finish, starts with Mouth for War and ends with Hollow....in my oppinion Panteras 2 best songs.
Corrosion of conformity - Wiseblood This is a good example of great music from the South. powerfull riffs and squealing solos, mixed with a great voice.
Pride and Glory - Pride and Glory I'm scratching the surfaces now, this is kind of straying out of metal. But it is still hard rock music with once again a southern style....Perhpas the only suggestion so far with Banjos!
Soundgarden - Superunknown Considered more a part of the grunge movement, but I can certainly see the metal influences. Although it can depress me at times it is still a great CD.
Alter Bridge - One Day remains I know what most peoples thoughts on Creed were, but Alter Bridge have imo a better, heavier sound. One of the very best modern day records.

Before I go to far away from the metal genre, I'll stop now.

Jev 11-26-2005 02:08 PM

It's just a shame about the Lou Gehrs(sp?) disease. Why did he have to catch it? He could've gone on to be a great(er) guitarist.
Black Label Society - 1919 Eternal I was tempted to go with Sonic Brew, but I prefer the heavier riffs from this album
I have 1919 Eternal! :)
Black Label Society is in fact a band I would love to hear more from!
Next best album is Sonic Brew you think?

Edit:
It's just a shame about the Lou Gehrs(sp?) disease. Why did he have to catch it? He could've gone on to be a great(er) guitarist.
It sucks... Had he been able to hang around for a little longer, it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't get mainstream attention, he was so amazing on guitar, easily (imo) one of the best guitarists ever.

I know I said Essential Metal albums, but if you have a favourite non-metal album, and you are willing to give say a 5 minute review of it, please do.

PepsiMetal 11-26-2005 02:25 PM

:thumb: Alter Bridge's One Day Remains is probably the best modern rock album. So many great songs, and it isn't anything like creed, I hate when people compare it with creed and scott stapp. I heard Scott Stapp's new track on Jay Leno's show, it wasn't much, but his stage presence is pretty good.

I like find the real. That song kicks ***.

Kyle 11-26-2005 02:26 PM
I have 1919 Eternal! :)

Next best album is Sonic Brew you think?
It realy depends on your favorite styles. The Blessed Hellride is often considered the best Black Label album, it has a similar heavy style to 1919 Eternal but also contains some slower chilled songs like the title track. sonic Brew has some unforgettable riffs and is probably my second favorite of theirs, it also has the mellow classic - spoke in the wheel. Then again if you like the chilled outside of BLS more you're probably off getting Hangover Music or Zakk's Book of Shadows.

Kyle 11-26-2005 02:28 PM
:thumb: Alter Bridge's One Day Remains is probably the best modern rock album.
yeah, it annoys me how so many people neglect it because of their history. Also new albums in general are often neglected in essential lists such as this one.

edit:sorry for double post

vashts80 11-26-2005 03:37 PM

1) Megadeth - Rust in Peace: considered by many as the best thrash album ever written

2) Death - Scream Bloody Gore: considered the first death metal album ever, even though Possessed's album came first

3) Slayer - Reign in Blood: same as #1

4) Sadus - Illusions/Chemical Exposure: Steve DiGiorgio is God. better than anything Metallica put out.

5) Flotsam and Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver: the album that put Jason Newsted on the map

6) Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast: rad.

7) Bathory - Bathory: started the first wave of black metal

8) Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss: better than De Myseriis Dom Sathanas
(Mayhem), which is considered the best second wave BM album ever written

9) Testament - The Legacy: pwn, even with the horrible quality

10) Exodus - Bonded by Blood: the first album from Exodus, full on thrash

PepsiMetal 11-26-2005 03:40 PM

I consider ride the lightning to be the best thrash album. :p

Iron maiden's powerslave, piece of mind, and somewhere in time also are great albums.
