I always find that I hate a live album if I do not know the band that well. But that's just me.
Yeah, I always recommend that people hear a studio album first, I mean you really don't get as much out of the live album if you don't see what changes were made from the studio. |
Thats true that you should hear the regulars first, but theres just something about live music i love...and seeing it is a whole different experience. Paul McCartny tix sold out here for two concerts in ten minutes, i was pissed.
Walrus, I might keep in touch on basses, since i dont want to make a bad decision on something like this. I'm outta here. |

They can be great starting points though, like with Neil Young. HIs live work shows both acoustic and electric sides of him. I'm not going to get the live ones till I get the studio ones I want though. (I have After the Goldrush, Harvest, and Everybody Knows...) |
I was just listening to Casey Jones. I finally noticed the snorting sound at the beginning. I remember someone mentioning it before, but I never actually heard it..despite listening to the song many times.

Yeah I didn't knowtice that for a while either, I laughed when I did. |
Casey Jones is a **** catchy song. And this is the kind of Dead stuff I like. Can you guys help me out with that one?

I just listened to After the Goldrush for the first time yesterday. My mom bought it for herself at Christmas in exchange for a Rolling Stones CD, and for some reason, I had heard negative things about Neil Young until I came here. It was pretty good, I'd probably give it a 4/5 but have to listen to it a lot more before I rate it. What would you recommend for a live album or other studio albums of his? Also, somebody mentioned McCartney- anyone know what solo album of his to buy? Should I just buy a greatest hits, and is Back in the USA any good? |
i play bass :D
|
the grateful deads version of stting on top of the world is my second favorite version of the song.
ive been on a fusion trip lately. just bought the al di meola, john mclaughlin, and paco delucia friday night in san francisco. it is awe inspiring. truly incredible guitar work. |
I love the songs on AYE, but the solos are so frikkin sloppy. The guitarwork overall is poor, and improves alot on Axis. So i love the songs as a whole, but not the guitarwork.
Except Fire. That song just ****in rocks. Little Wing is probably his best display of guitar work (clean-wise) And i got this album 'First Rays of the New Rising Sun' a few months ago, which i like alot, but are they just songs that didnt make the albums by the time he died? Thats what i was told, but i dont know where they came from
It may have been sloppy in bits, but that was kinda his trademark. Guys like Jeff Beck and Pete Townshend were just beginning to experiment with distortion, and Hendrix came and blew everyone away with his use of distortion. And, yeah, Fire does rock :) . np: Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick |
Fire is one of the best drumming songs ever. Songs like Fire, Who Are You, and Living Wreck are proof that you can have kick *** songs centered around the drums while still maintaining a song (Ie no drum solo to break up the song flow) format.

so now journey and whitesnake have been added to my common ground music festival experience. weird. |
So can anybody recommend a Grateful Dead album to me if my favorite songs are Casey Jones and Truckin'?

how come everybody's dad blazes except for mine.. :upset: |
When I got caught smoking weed, my mom freaked out, but my dad told me to smoke at the beach or in the woods instead of in public places
|
^ That would never happen to me. I would be grounded forever. I don't smoke though.

My mom and stepdad: "Don't get arrested, don't get a girl pregnant"

big thanks to all who actually voted for me in the RMOTM thread. I was content just to get a nomination, let alone a couple of votes. Hell i was even surprised i actually got nominated.
|
I tried American Beauty, and it seemed much more mellow and quiet than I like, but maybe it's time I give it another shot.
|
^Maybe some of their live stuff, then. I can't give you my own opinion, bu I heard Two From the Vault was good, or Europe 72.
|
Skull & Roses has mostly Country influenced material, but it is live.
