Having a positive rapport with students is important, but living vicariously through them is not. If you want to live vicariously through younger people, find some slut to bang, have kids, and then live vicariously through them to the point that they grow up to hate you. Everybody loses, which would make Vince happy.

big80smullet 02-13-2008 09:34 PM

lol slut

Good Lord, the less they know about me the better. It's better for them to think that after school I go home and study/prepare lessons the whole time than have a modicum of a social life, even if it's being social on the Internets.

I was covering substance abuse and drugs and whatnot and told them that I wasn't that far removed from being in high school and I hear lots of stuff going on in the halls to begin with, but the point of the lesson is not to say, "Don't do it," but to be in the very least aware of the risks that go with it.

So this one student was like, "Have you smoked weed?"

The actual answer is no, but I like to mess with them a little.

"Well, that puts me in a tough spot. If I say no, then you think I'm lying. If I say yes, then I'm a stoner. I can't win, can I?"

Transient 02-13-2008 09:47 PM

By high school, about how old are we talking?

Tyler 02-13-2008 09:47 PM

My old media teacher used to give us ridiculous tests, then he'd go out to his car, get high, and stand in the window in front of our class laughing at us. I miss him.

Iluvatar 02-13-2008 09:48 PM

My goal is to be a teacher

but now that I know Jom is one I dont know

RouteOne 02-13-2008 09:49 PM

I'm going to college to be a history teacher.

Jom 02-13-2008 09:49 PM
By high school, about how old are we talking?
My students are 16-18 for the most part because they're mostly juniors and seniors, so I guess anywhere from 13-18? I was 13 when I started high school, anyway.

NemesisDivina 02-13-2008 09:50 PM

Jom, which subject do you teach?

Ahh yes, I love when teachers are cool like this.

Tyler 02-13-2008 09:51 PM

Imma guess it's a humanities course

No matter where you go [in real life], you have to 'be' within your personality... [on the Internet] you can be wHaTeVeR yOu WaNt!!1!eleven!11!

I teach to the limits of my real-life personality (hint: there aren't any) and that makes the actual school part fun. The other stuff that goes with it (the copy room, the gossip in the teachers' lounge, etc.) I could do without, but they are necessary evils. Also, ITIPs can blow me.

EDIT: sometimes the gossip is really funny though

Iluvatar 02-13-2008 09:55 PM

I assume he teaches health!

The Door Mouse 02-13-2008 09:56 PM

This health teacher at my school is like half brain dead.

He taught at my school for like 3 years and then he went to New York and the story goes that he got mugged badly. So then when he came back he was completely out of it.

Its a shame because he was an excellent athlete.

Tyler 02-13-2008 09:58 PM

lol "health teacher"

Oh man, my mom is a teacher and she says the gossip among teachers can get BRUTAL.

Deth 02-13-2008 10:00 PM

Health teachers are usually where they shove the coaches.

The Door Mouse 02-13-2008 10:02 PM

Both the heath teachers at my school are coaches so yeah.

I actually had a football coach that taught pre-calculus...
Oh man, my mom is a teacher and she says the gossip among teachers can get BRUTAL.
Oh, it's no joke. I thought I walked into a classroom instead of the planning room one morning because of some of the stuff that was being said, heh. I have no idea what other teachers say about me but I'm sure they have tried to matchmake me without me knowing or they have exhausted the laundry list of character flaws that I have, hahaha.

The best gossip is when they slag students, though. It sounds mean, but the teachers who are nearing retirement/have tenure/can do whatever the hell they want/are completely disenfranchised are so damn funny.

Transient 02-13-2008 10:03 PM

Oh ok. (@ Jom)

I was just wondering whether you taught a specific year group or something. Upper schoolers are apparantly the best (according to teachers). Not because it's easier to teach them or anything just because they're easier to talk **** with.

Iluvatar 02-13-2008 10:06 PM

I was a student aide and I always sat in on the english departments planning room because they all loved me (I WAS BRILLIANT THEY SAID THX VRY MUCH) and it was probably my favorite part of school ever.

Hilarity, drama, politics, and massive lulz to be had. Plus I knew everything way before anyone else did.

Jom 02-13-2008 10:07 PM

The dynamic between 13-14 year olds and 17-18 year olds is definitely different, absolutely. I observed a freshman English class (i.e. 13, 14 year-old kids) that had students identified with sub-standard reading skills, and the teacher was absolutely amazing at getting the kids to connect with the book they were reading and making it relevant to their lives. A lot of my students have senioritis, too, so it's more than a challenge getting them to stay motivated. Some days, it feels like an impossibility, heh.

illpressureurhinges1 02-13-2008 10:08 PM

It seems like gossip is most prominant with English teachers. My AP English teacher last year used to bag on ALL the other teachers to us. It was hilarious.

gmoneyguy 02-13-2008 10:08 PM

Senioritis was ok for me because I absorb lessons really easily.

illpressureurhinges1 02-13-2008 10:10 PM

I'm starting to get senioritis... I was sick this weekend, but I kept it going and milked three days out of it so that I didn't have to go to school. It was nice...

Im a senior. Motivation is a bitch.

Iluvatar 02-13-2008 10:11 PM

My GPA dropped from a 3.7 to a 3.2 because of senior year.

illpressureurhinges1 02-13-2008 10:12 PM

Wow. That's pretty bad. I had 4.2 all junior year, but my first semester of senior year was a 3.8. That might have to do with the 3 AP classes I have instead of just 1 from last year though...

big80smullet 02-13-2008 10:12 PM

lol like GPA means anything.

It's where those guys who played football for way too long but never made it anywhere end up.

it does when you try to get into college
