what kind of fabric should I use for a back patch? I was thinking of just putting the dessign on a t shirt and cutting it out to use as a patch, is that a good idea?

That's probably not the best idea but if you do that, make sure you sew it up nicely.

Yeah... Something canvas-like is what you should use.

RudeBoyStompin 11-27-2005 01:25 PM

One of my friends made a back patch from black canvas. He got a ton of it for really cheap but I forget where.

(r)evolution 11-27-2005 01:26 PM

black canvas.. okay thanks guys

Teeb 11-27-2005 07:36 PM

T-shirt I made

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v414/Teeb/BlackFlag.jpg

I got the stencil off stencilpunx, but when I printed it off it was too small. So I got out a ruler and doubled all the dimensions.

Anarcho Poser 11-27-2005 07:46 PM

Nice job.

Vietnow 11-27-2005 08:22 PM

does anyone know a site that explains to you how to do those nice big multi-colour sprays? The Free handed ones? I'd like to do some on day

I'm gunna try and do it, then freehand in the cut out parts. I'll post pics when it's done.

thanx man. they took a while to make, i had to sew the tongues to the shoes. that was bloody annoying. high tops are very thick. the zippers were easy though, just needed some dental floss and my lighter.

This might sound like a strange question but i don't suppose you know a good place to pick up studs for a jacket? I was knocking around Camden last week and couldn't find any anywhere :(

Scabies 11-28-2005 09:16 AM

i coldnt think of a good enough joke so just go to black rose (the mega goth shop) in the stables. its near the food court right next to that rockabilly shop ( dragstrip i think)

Drop The Baby 11-28-2005 09:19 AM

I think i walked straight past that place because i couldn't bring myself to walk into a place like that. If i go to the Dead Pets tomorrow i'll check it out, cheers

Drop The Baby 11-28-2005 10:59 AM

Don't know, doors are probably at around 8. Check it out, you're on the internet.

coheneran 11-28-2005 11:10 AM

Good point. Thanks.

RudeBoyStompin 11-28-2005 04:08 PM

Does anyone know anything about making one's own incense. I love incense and would love to make my own. I haven't really looked into making my own much so I am wondering if anyone has any good methods.

coheneran 11-28-2005 04:14 PM

I once made my own incense mix, but never rolled it up. What you do is dry the herbs you want to use, chop them and grind them to a very fine powder using a mortar and pestle. sieve it a few times, REALLY refine the powder, and then mix it with a little bit of water and roll it up around a tooth pick. that's how my friend made them. I think you put them on light heat in the oven to dry after. you can also roll them into cones and dry them. I prefer conical incense.

RudeBoyStompin 11-28-2005 04:32 PM

Sounds like a bit of work but if I find some good stuff to make them out of it'd probably be worth it.

coheneran 11-28-2005 04:36 PM

I used garden stuff for the mix, like rosmary, thyme, oregano, something mediterranean called za'atar etc.. In the end I just put nutmeg in it as well and used it as a smoke mix. It didn't work :( but it tasted nice.

Liebensaft 11-28-2005 05:50 PM

That's pretty cool.

holy_roller99 11-28-2005 11:28 PM

the problem with zipper shoes is that they don't stay up.

coheneran 11-29-2005 05:38 AM

Sew a mini belt support (like around the top of jeans) around the top of the boot and thread a short piece of lace (the non-underwear kind) through it and through the hole in the zipper. If that's at all understandable.

Q? for all DIY'ers

my band mates and i are in a hurry to make some decent merch for saturday.

1. tee shirts
2. patches
3. hats
4. pins
4 1/2. stickers
5.edit: no more scented candles...:(

ok, my ideas for the more important ones, tee's, patches, hats(anything that is fabric) was to use fabric spraypaint or dye, but im not sure if they sell that at any local fabric stores, or anywhere in my area... does anyone know where to get some, or have an alternative (shirts will be black and white and probably from a thrift store, as well as patches and hats)

can anyone give me a how to on making stickers, and scented candles(im serious, although the candles may be a bit overboard)?

I've used spray paint, and it works fairly well as long as you use a bright color, and more than one coat.

Candles are overboard.

The way I've done stickers in the past is just get some printable return adress things for smaller stickers, and bigger printable mail adress sheets, and just print onto them, or if you're cool, draw on them.

i knew the candles were too much... maybe one or two then (buy a 99c scented candle and put a sticker on it...)

ok, so just spraypaint, see i was thinking, what if someone washes the shirt... we're just going to stencil our names and a design(were all stencil artists)... and yea that seems more logical with the stickers, thanks m8.

any more ideas plz...

Your local craft store will almost definately have fabric paint. You might be better off getting plain fabric paint anyway, I've heard fabric spraypaint does't work too well. If you really wanna do it from a spray can, though, regular spraypaint works alright. I'd go with bottled fabric paint and a paint roller, though. Also, dye is probably just not a good idea.

I'd abandon the scented candle idea. I mean honestly, how many people do you think would actually buy scented candles? It's probably just more trouble than it's worth.

I've never done stickers before... maybe you could try and find some sticker sheets that will run through your printer somewhere.

coheneran 11-30-2005 08:53 PM

Most office supplies stores will have sticker sheets, but some printers don't take them, or you need a special ink cartridge or something like that. check that out. patches are easy, as someone said already. make the stencil, get black canvas (or some other rough fabric) and white paint on in 2 or three thin layers. wait to dry between each layer. and remember, don't sell to make a profit! that's the true punk way. sell to break even.

we dont plan to make a profit... there are like, 8 other bands, its a festival like thing. we just want to get some merch out there.

coheneran 12-01-2005 08:48 AM

Cool. :thumb:
Another thing you could do is design a cool stencil with your band logo and make like two dozen of them and hand them out. Everyone loves spraying cool stuff. In fact, let's presume that while you're playing, the people on the front row are enjoying you the most. It's a crap presumption, but stay with me. If everyone in the front row is 'your biggest fan' etc. then hand out the stencils to the guys in the front. If they like you the most, they will be most likely the ones who want to spray your band logo all over McDonalds.
