I have still yet to get Ummagumma, Id like to get Saucerful Of Secrets as well.
The live CD in Ummagumma is fantastic, so go for it :thumb:

NP: Echoes

Yeah, that's what i'm going to get next (ummagumma). After that I think i'll get AHM and be done with buying Floyd albums for a while.
I have still yet to get Ummagumma, Id like to get Saucerful Of Secrets as well.
definitely got saucerful of secrets...

magicbus 11-19-2006 02:45 PM

I say get em all. Each pre Meddle album is really good, just different from their other stuff. All worth a shot though.

Riva 11-19-2006 09:14 PM

Yes, each pre-Meddle album brings something different to the band's sound. I think they really laid the groundwork for the Golden Age, as it were.

Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and the last half of Saucerful Of Secrets are really accessible, enjoyable, top-notch psychadelic rock. The first half of SOS has that sort of avant-garde "jam" sound that I like to think set up Animals.

More shows both a heavier, and a more ambient side of Floyd. Crying Song and Up The Khyber to my mind were the forerunners of Echoes, and The Nile Song shows glimpses of the band's work in The Final Cut and the more rocky tracks of The Wall. Green Is The Colour is just plain excellent, and along with Cirrus Minor set up most of Obscured By Clouds.

Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother bring much less to the band's cumulative experience, I feel, but If could be considered the spiritual forerunner to Dark Side Of The Moon. I can't explain it, it's more or less a feeling I get from listening to it.

But yeah, it's probably all bull, but it's something I've been thinking about a lot. Heh.

Apocalyptic Raids 11-19-2006 09:18 PM

I can definitely see what you mean in regards to Atom Heart Mother.

MattSharpIsCool 11-19-2006 10:23 PM

I should listen to More. I've had it on my computer for ages, but I have barely listened to it.

Riva 11-19-2006 10:42 PM

More was my favourite Pink Floyd album for a long time, actually.

blue3 11-20-2006 01:14 AM

pink floyd! squee!!!

Seriously though, would you guys kill me if I said I've only heard a few tracks from More?

I've not heard Ummagumma but I think I see what you are saying about Atom Heart Mother feeling like a precursor to DSOTM. I still can't put my finger on what I like so much about Atom Heart Mother, but it remains one of my top favorite albums of theirs.

I haven't heard it at all :(

blue3 11-20-2006 01:46 AM

hi5? No? Alright then.

Riva 11-20-2006 01:52 AM

:hi5:

It's okay, More isn't their most famous album by a long shot.

And Jules > Jono.

Hey guys, found a page a few of you might be interested in. It's got a recording of a set Roger Waters played in September. Quality is pretty decent, and the set list is impeccable. It's it's been posted before, ignore me. :p

Very cool. Thank you, Greg.

F33DBACK 11-21-2006 02:37 AM

Hey guys, I used to be a big Pink Floyd fan myself. But I kind of slowly stop listening to them. But I still respect them for what they did. But the reason why I'm here, I was wondering if you guys can help me with something. Long time ago I once saw a music video on television. And like there was like members of the band sitting on the floor playing their instruments. I know it doesn't tell you much, but it's all that I can remember of the video. I don't remember if it was Syd or David playing the guitar. But he was playing with like if I remember well. A bottle of beer as a slider. Anyways, I never saw that video again, but I'd like to see it again. If you guys know what I'm talking about, it would be awesome if you can help me. If not, well, it's not that important.

magicbus 11-21-2006 12:37 PM

Do you remember how many guys there were? And was there a dog? :p

I can think of a few things that might be what you're looking for.

Danger Bird 11-21-2006 04:09 PM

Maybe that was Mademoiselle Nobs from Live at Pompeii?

magicbus 11-21-2006 05:25 PM

That's what I was thinking.

I also had another studio video of the Floyd in 1970, and there are a couple songs with just Roger and David on acoustic guitars. I don't remember if he had a slide or not though.

Riva 11-21-2006 06:49 PM

Now I'm trying to remember if it was Syd or Dave with the zippo.

Danger Bird 11-21-2006 06:50 PM

Syd.

Riva 11-21-2006 07:02 PM

Alright, thank you.

So then, it's most likely Dave in Live At Pompeii, though they weren't ALL sitting down, heh.

Yield 11-21-2006 07:22 PM

What did Syd do with the zippo anyways?

magicbus 11-21-2006 07:30 PM

He used it as a slide.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 11-21-2006 07:40 PM

Did anyone know that Syd sometimes used a violin bow in concert? Kind of like that guitarist from that band that had that really big song....something about a buying stairway and oh...they hijacked old bluesmen.....I don't know their name though.

For some reason images of the Hindenburgh are coming to mind...

But yeah electric string instruments in concert can be really cool. There's a band called Zox who is starting to get pretty big (touring most of the US and a little bit of Europe now) who has a lead electric violinist. He's incredible too.

Riva 11-21-2006 10:21 PM

Electric Light Orchestra for the win and great justice. ^_^

But seriously, Spence, I nearly pulled out a rant until I realised it was you posting. Heh.
