Hehe, nothing like a good mock arguement.
Should I get the Grateful Dead Movie of the Closing of Winterland Dvd?
I saw The Grateful Dead Movie on PBS a long time ago,a nd I have been trying to get my hands on it since reading Searching for the Sound, so I would get that. But I don't think I will because there's bound to be some kid at my school that has it.

I know that TGDM is supposed to be more of a documentary

Mr.BlueSky- Shhh.. there are Canadians in this thread, we wouldn't want to hurt their feelings

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 08-22-2005 02:23 PM

I listined to 5th Deminsion (by the Byrds) today and I have to say I was very disappointed I enjoyed it the last time I listined to it. I don't know what happened. :(

The thread name shall remain the same!

Leper 08-22-2005 02:24 PM

Did anyone ever see that movie about the Monkees? I saw about half of it on T.V. a while ago. The part that really struck me was when they got a young Jimi Hendrix to open for them, and he got boo'd off the stage.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 08-22-2005 02:33 PM

The Monkees sucked they just tried to be part of the British Invasion trend and it's too bad they succeded but at least they faded away quickly. They weren't real musicians or songwritters just a cheesy pop band who somehow became big.

I heard that Hendrix once opened for the Monkees, which is weird as hell...would anyone who came to see the Monkees ever want to see Hendrix?

It was their dashing good looks. Always easy to play that card

Well that was quick and easy. Went to Best Buy, bought the TGDM, and now I'm back.

Illmatic 08-22-2005 02:39 PM

The Monkees were the greatest marketing ploy evar.
I heard that Hendrix once opened for the Monkees, which is weird as hell...would anyone who came to see the Monkees ever want to see Hendrix?
He didn't just open for them once...he went on tour with them as their opener every night. I don't think it lasted the entire tour, mainly because 12 year old girls don't wanna listen to Hendrix tripping on acid and making otherworldly sounds from his guitar.

I got back from that festival last night. Amazing. It was literally in a field of marijuana, as far as your eyes could see it was just plants everywhere. You had to flatten out a space for your tent and make your own paths and stuff. It was amazing. A very cool reggae band played Saturday night, as well as some tribal stuff with fire dancing and stuff. After about midnight it was all techno I'm pretty sure, but we all passed out in our tent. There were vans selling various hemp/tye dye type stuff and a lot of food. This old man was there who wrote songs/poetry, he said he could never remember anything he wrote so he wrote a new poem each day. He sang us a few songs it was pretty cool. Once guy got on stage on Sunday and performed a bunch of cool folkish songs along with a few Beatles tunes. Another guy played blues slide guitar on his acoustic and it was great.

edit - (best thing was that there were no cops! everyone was smoking up)
Should I get the Grateful Dead Movie of the Closing of Winterland Dvd?
It's okay, so I guess. The Grateful Dead movie is much better.

Lunch 08-22-2005 02:44 PM

Crap, that was a typo, I meant The Grateful Dead Movie or* The Closing of Winterland Dvd. I ended up getting the Grateful Dead Movie.

Well, I meant "once" as in "one tour", and I think they dropped him after only a few shows.

That sounds like some sort of sick fantasy. Is Canada really that wonderful? I might move there...
I really need to hit more festivals, maybe next summer. This one sounds great though :thumb:

Probably not..I'm guessing that's why he got boo'd off stage hehe.

And Schyma just so you know I don't like the Monkees, I was just wondering if anyone had seen the movie.. :thumb:

I wouldn't even have been listening to the music, I would be taking as much as I could...and then sell it.

Heh. We had a protest to legalize weed here a little while back, everybody was smoking dope in front of the police station and the cops didn't do anything.

/random story I was just reminded of.
Did you take a lot?

Me and my 2 other friends pitched in together and ended up with 17 grams for the weekend. We didn't even smoke it all, we smoked a lot with other people too. If you started smoking somewhere, within about five minutes it'd be a circle with like at least 20 people in it. Although if we wanted to smoke up just the 3 of us we either stayed in the tent or made a little circle in the middle of the hemp field.

We got asked if we could sell weed, we could have made quite a bit of money although anytime someone asked to buy some we would just smoke them up. Saturday night was the best, the reggae band was called Sound Foundation and they were beyond amazing. At first there were only a couple people standing and dancing, by the end of their set there was like a hundred people all dancing. I sooo stoned that night, we had been literally smoking up for like 24 hours straight, plus I had a decent amount of wine.

I've got pulled over once while I had a joint in my mouth, a couple times while the car was hotboxed. They've taken our drugs before but they always send us on our way after. It's fairly slack, as long as you don't have alcohol.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 08-22-2005 04:54 PM

Kidding :p

thickasabrick 08-22-2005 05:03 PM

I don't necessarily hate The Monkees, I just have no respect for them as musicians. Plus I remember one of them saying some really arrogant remarks regarding their success and mentioning something about Hendrix.

I like some of "their" songs though.

Spoiler Canadians

thickasabrick 08-22-2005 05:35 PM

Which band/artist do you guys think appeals to the most genres? Like who is most liked and respected by fans of most different genres? I'm thinking Johnny Cash, since he appeals to country, folk, rock, anything rebellious really, and anything that involves storytelling etc. What do you guys think?

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 08-22-2005 06:01 PM

The Beatles easily. Almost everyone around that period no matter what kind of music you were into almost everyone loved the Beatles. The most loved band of all time. That's not just an opinion either. It's hard not to like those guys.

Sublime also appeals alot of people stoners/punks/rappers/raggae fans.

thickasabrick 08-22-2005 06:23 PM

Yeah Med mentioned all the ones that were on my mind. Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley. Even if someone doesn't enjoy listening to one of those bands/artists, I'm pretty sure every respects them. When you think of it, it's really just all the best songwriters.

Sublime is well liked and respected among younger crowds, I don't think they are as well liked and respected among older crowds.

edit- Certainly you have more than five hundred posts, Med?

Badmoon 08-22-2005 06:24 PM

It's The Beatles. When I was in Mexico I saw a bunch of different kinds of bands playing Beatles songs.

One a Rock band that played "Can't Buy Me Love"
Another a Bass, Drum and Keyboard trio that played "Piggies" and "When I'm 64"
And a Mariachi Band that played "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", which was insane.

That's just an example of how The Beatles influence goes outside of Britian, Canada, USA, etc

Mojo is a Classic Rock magazine.

classicrockman 08-22-2005 08:19 PM

I really like 'Classic Rock' magazine, but I only buy it on the newstands because it's made in England. :upset: Therefore, I would have to pay in British pounds. But I did buy the last issue, which had great reports on:

AC/DC, Dream Theater, Ian Hunter, 40 greatest power ballads, and a good one on Tony Iommi and Glenn Hughes.

Rolling Stone can be interesting, an extremely corporate, guilty pleasure of a magazine.
